Kreidler alone wouldn't get Bassitt or Manaea, but as part of a trade package?  I can see that.
Arte Moreno

I am almost always on an annual budget that is independent of the lux tax.  I have said many times I would actually go over the tax for “the right player.”
Is this the year that happens?
Mark P
1:54
Since the Angels haven't exceeded the tax limit since 2004 (Moreno's second year owning the team), I'll believe it when I see it

Do you think it was a good idea for the Mets to walk away from Rocker after the draft?
Mark P
1:56
I haven't seen his medicals so I have no idea.  But in general, teams are loath to miss out on a pick, especially a high first-rounder like Rocker was.  The Mets must've had some serious concerns.

How does the union view the Wander Franco deal?
Mark P
1:58
"The Rays spent HOW MUCH?!" screamed Tony Clark, while falling out of his chair

On a more serious note, I can imagine the MLBPA being pretty okay with how this went down.  Franco is getting huge money, and it also sets a new precedent for the next mega-prospect who comes along.

Can the Jays pry Bieber away from Cleveland with an offer of big prospects? I’m thinking Moreno, Pearson and Groshans
Mark P
1:59
You're in the ballpark of what it would take to obtain Bieber, but the Guardians would want even more.
From Toronto specifically, probably something like Gurriel and another prospect

Who is going to get elected to the HOF?
Mark P
2:01
I think Ortiz might be the only one elected.  Hopefully the two veterans committees add some of the deserving names (i.e. Buck O'Neil, Minnie Minoso, Dick Allen) that have been overlooked in the past

The rangers should be still williing to eat a contract with a prospect no? It's not likely they are in the mix next year barring a miracle
Mark P
2:04
Texas has enough payroll flexibility that they should be open to all possibilities, including eating a contract.  But maybe, they can adjust their thinking to obtain an MLB-ready talent who can help them win in 2022, along with that undesirable contract

Kyle Lewis for Matt Chapman. Who says no?
Mark P
2:06
Oakland, since Lewis missed almost all of last season
Joe Maddon

Adell....Adell....Adell.........out of all the voluminous trade pitches you've seen for Adell do you recall ever seeing one that you actually thought "hmm that might just work for both teams"?
Mark P
2:08
There have been plenty of reasonable Adell proposals, sure.  But those are the ones that are commensurate with Adell's status as a top-tier prospects.  Not, say, "the Angels need a shortstop, how about Adell for Gio Urshela?"

Josh Bell and Riley Adams to the Guardians for Triston McKenzie and Cody Morris? Does this make sense for both teams? Thanks.
Mark P
2:09
Cleveland isn't saying yes to that, McKenzie has way more value.

Why wouldn't the Yankees sign a big  time SS and then trade one of Vope or Parazza in a package for 1b Olson? They always tend to hold onto top prospects until their value sinks.
Mark P
2:12
I don't doubt that there might be some gamesmanship at play here, as in the Yankees front office is suddenly talking up Volpe and Peraza as Jeter 2.0 and 3.0 in order to try and boost their trade values.  Since the Yankees are trying to win now, acquiring one of the big shortstops makes more sense to me than waiting for two prospects who may or may not pan out.
2:13
Not that Volpe/Peraza won't be good MLB players or anything.  But even if they do end up being only "good," Yankees fans will be sore about this for years if any of Seager, Semien, etc. go on to have several more productive years (or worse, sign with a team that then defeats the Yankees in a postseason series)

You answer questions about non baseball topics all the time. In the 2 years I have followed the chats you have never answered a single question about Pittsburgh. Why?
Mark P
2:15
I've answered plenty of Pirates questions over the years.  The Bucs do, in general, tend to generate fewer questions than most teams, since I think they're just not on a lot of fans' radars as a rebuilding team, or it's a lot of "could we get Bryan Reynolds for these two minor prospects?" type of items

Is the Guardians franchise now obligated to field the best defensive team so as not to be a misnomer?
Mark P
2:16
It's not like the Dodgers players are advised to avoid the baseball

Semien's reputation around the league I believe was already high based on how Oakland players and fans reacted to his departure. His Jay's tenure only increased that in my opinion. Could he be the most valuable of all the shortstops over the next 3-4 seasons from this class?
Mark P
2:18
He certainly could, which is what makes Semien so valuable even amidst this crowded market.  Despite his age, Semien is in a way the safest bet of the "big five," since he isn't looking for a big 10-year deal or anything

What gets Cards closer to the World Series: Signing a SS like Baez/Story or signing Max Scherzer for 2-3 years?
Mark P
2:19
I'd tend to think a big bat (if not necessarily Baez or Story), since the Cards are good at run prevention as it is

Al Avila must be talking up other teams' interest in Kreidler to prep the fan base for an underwhelming SS addition, or none at all, right? Why spend all that money when we have such a sought after SS prospect...
Mark P
2:20
Like I said before, Kreidler isn't a top-tier prospect.  MLB Pipeline has him as the 10th-best prospect in Detroit's system, so he isn't even a blue-chipper for the Tigers themselves.
2:21
Also, I would imagine teams routinely ask about just about every interesting prospect that's close to majors, even in just a casual "hey, this Kreidler kid, what would want for him?" kind of speculative ask
Marlins
2:22
Is there a world where we sign both Chris Taylor and Conforto???
Mark P
2:22
Nope.  I can see the Marlins spending bigger than usual for one player, but two would count as a surprise.

Is Yaz and Ruf tradable?
Mark P
2:25
Both are probably available for the right price, Ruf moreso than Yaz since Yaz is more of a true everyday player.  The Giants do value their depth and what both guys can bring, but I do wonder if trading from some of this depth to make room for an everyday star or two could be their plan
The Giants have the flexibility to do basically anything this winter, so the sky's the limit
