Should the Dodgers let Kershaw walk and pursue other options? Do you think Kershaw has lasting injury concerns?
Mark P
9:35
Andrew Friedman has already outright said that Kershaw's legend status will make the team treat him differently than a normal player.  So while a normal player with that injury history might be let go, the Dodgers might bend in Kershaw's case

Tyler Glasnow looks like he'd be a good trade fit with the Nats. What type of deal would a Glasnow to the Nats possibly look like? Do you think Tampa adding Kiermaier to the mix (unloading his salary to a team with payroll flexibility) could help in getting a deal done? Thanks.
Mark P
9:37
If the Nats offered to take all of Kiermaier's salary and Glasnow, I suspect Tampa might settle for a relatively modest prospect return.  That could appeal to a team like Washington, who isn't deep on top-tier prospects to offer in trades, and doesn't want to move any young talent if they're semi-reloading anyway
Wacha
9:38
Do Sox see me as a starter or bullpen option? Am I indicative of the moves we’ll see from Chaim and Co?
Mark P
9:38
The fact that Wacha could be either is surely part of his appeal.  I'd imagine he'll get a look at winning a rotation job in Spring Training or at the start of the season, and if that doesn't pan out, the Sox have a swingman

What's the latest on the cardinals shortstop quest?
Mark P
9:40
Not a lot of buzz because, of course, the Cardinals have arguably three guys already who can play shortstop.  If the opportunity comes to swing a trade to move DeJong and sign one of the bigger names, I do think the team would jump, but that's a couple of big plates to keep spinning at once

We shall now take an intermission in the chat while I update this Yimi Garcia post (hopefully with correct information this time rage).  Check out the concession area for popcorn, soda, and other treats!

And we're back!  Let's grab a few more questions...
Billy B
9:51
We have a few teams interested in trades but are waiting for the free agent inventory to shrink first. ...and the CBA to wrap up. When do you guess that will happen?
Mark P
9:53
I'm assuming Billy B is Billy Beane here, and as for a new CBA, your guess is as good as mine.  Both the owners and players are giving the impression that a deal will be worked out by February and the freeze will lift in time for Spring Training to start on time, but given the gaps between the two sides, I'm worried.
For an A's team that has pitchers on offer, however, they're already looking in good shape with so many free agents signing

Mets fans were salivating about getting Matt Chapman prior to yesterday's signings. I'd still love him on the team. Would you think they could get Chapman for McNeil straight up? Or would Oakland require someone further from arbitration?
Mark P
9:54
The A's would want a lot more than just McNeil in exchange for Chapman

JD Davis gets traded and puts up a heck of a year with his new team? .275/.355/.475 30 HRs 30 2Bs 100 RBI ??
Mark P
9:55
Davis definitely stands out as someone who can blossom (or continue to hit well) on a new team.  Get him into a 1B/DH role and we could have a breakout situation.

Jo Adell for Jo Adell. Who says no?
Mark P
9:56
The Angels would want.....wait.....
NL DH
9:56
Has this been confirmed?
Mark P
9:56
Just about everyone seems to think the universal DH will be part of the next CBA.  It was popular enough league-wide in 2020

Meyers and Hosmer of SD are not as bad of players as people make them out to be. They are not super stars but they are not trash. Why would some team that needs a outfielder or first baseman not trade for one of them with a very good prospect attached to them?  SD saves money other team gets good prospect and a useable player?
Mark P
9:58
They're definitely not bad, but they're also not performing up to the size of their contracts.  If Hosmer was a free agent now, for instance, he wouldn't land anything close to his remaining salary.

I'm sure the Padres have explored exactly the kind of Hosmer or Myers + prospect trade you mention here, except other teams are surely haggling over the quality of the prospect, and exactly how much money will be changing hands

What do  you think of the trade of All Star Adam Frazier from the Padres perspective.  On the one hand, it seems like the Padres had a logjam at second base and the salary savings by trading Frazier might help with signing another free agent.  But it seems the Padres paid a steep price by trading three good prospects to Pittsburgh to acquire Frazier for less than a season, only to get two non-prospects in return in the trade with Seattle.
Mark P
9:59
At the moment, the Adam Frazier experiment has to be seen as a move that didn't work out for the Padres.  They took a shot to improve the team at the deadline, it didn't work out, and now they're going to move on.

Does a Whitt Merrifield make sense for the Jays? A deal centred around Gurriel and prospects?
Mark P
10:00
I'm sure the Jays would have plenty of interest in Merrifield, but the Royals have been steadfast in refusing all trade offers.

Are the Mets going to have a manager next season ?
Mark P
10:01
We probably shouldn't rule out Mr. Met himself at this point.  And hey, he does have plenty of experience with the team.
Brian
10:02
Mark, Dipoto said he has offers on the table to 2 free agents any chance one of them is one of the top ss on the market and a pitcher like stroman? After 20 years is it time for ms fans to get excited and think about playoff baseball?
Mark P
10:03
My guess is that by "notable," Dipoto meant one of the deals was to a major free agent.

But the wording was amusing, frankly.  If I'm the other player who has gotten the offer from the M's, I'm thinking "what am I, chopped liver?!"

Ooh this is like watching Lawrence of Arabia Or the 10 commandments An intermission. Darn that supply chain they"re all out of Kit Kats.

"What are Mark's chats like?"
"They're like Lawrence Of Arabia."
"Wow, that good?"
"Uh..."

Could the Orioles or other teams lose out on players like Mullins who’s value has part to do with their control? If the cba changes time to free agency, this would hinder his and many other players’ values. How much of this are gm’s factoring into trades?
Mark P
10:06
I'm sure it's a factor, but in Mullins' specific case, he is under control for four more seasons.  If there is some alteration to the CBA involving service time, I doubt it'll be some change so drastic that a player like Mullins could now be a free agent after 2023 or something.

Should I be shooting for a 1 year deal to rebuild value and if so where would be the best place for me?
Mark P
10:07
My guess is that Paxton just re-signs with Seattle
Brew Crew Fan
10:08
I've seen a lot of ppl (brewer fans mostly) say Brewers should trsde for 1B-Matt Olson. Brewers don't have enough to trade for him without giving up Ashby (which they won't do) correct??
Mark P
10:09
I do think that in the event of a bidding war, the Brewers don't have the farm depth to get Olson.  Maybe if Olson had more than two years of control, they'd think about giving up a lot of prospects for him.
