Whitaker is a HOF in my books.  Amazed that he got so little attention when he was on the ballot.
Marlins
9:20
Between the allure of Miami and the insane ceiling of the entire starting rotation, could you see the Marlins becoming a FA destination in the next 2-4 years?
Mark P
9:22
Miami has seemed like a sleeping giant of a baseball market for years, it's just that the team was perpetually mismanaged by ownership, and the Sherman/Jeter group has thus far been trying to rebuild everything.  Signs seems to be pointing in the right direction, however, and if the Marlins are willing to spend, no reason they can't attract top-tier talent.
Heck, even Loria was willing to spend at times, and was thus able to bring big names to Miami
Nostradamus

Who wins AL Rookie of the Year in 2021? Julio Rodriguez? Adley Ruschman?
Mark P
9:24
I'm going out on a limb to predict that Randy Arozarena will be the AL ROY in 2021.

As for 2022, Rutschman seems like a strong bet
CBA
9:25
Players simply HAVE to hit free agency earlier in their careers. What do you think about age 26.5 as the threshold for hitting FA?
Mark P
9:27
26.5 is too early, the owners would never go for it.

I do wonder if there isn't some middle ground of "free agency at six years of service time OR age 28.75, whichever comes first."  Or maybe some other mechanism that could delay free agency for a certain player until age 29.
Enrico Polatzo
9:27
I know there’s been discussion about an nba style draft lottery for the next CBA, but any word if trading draft picks is up for discussion during the negotiations?    Seems long overdue.
Mark P
9:28
Hey, it's Enrico Polatzo!

Trading picks in general would add some extra fun to the draft, even if I do kind of doubt too many top picks would ever change hands.

25 million for Verlander, per year, for 2 years, for a post TJ Verlander seems INSANE! Am I alone in thinking this?
Mark P
9:29
It's certainly a risk, but for a special pitcher like Verlander, it is a risk the Astros (and probably other teams) were willing to take
Ken
9:29
How much longer is the Rays' window to contend?
Mark P
9:30
Given how deep their farm system is, and given how they seem incredibly good at swinging trades and finding value in new players.....I dunno, the rest of the decade?
Guillermo Frijoles
9:30
Do I try to attach Elvis Andrus to one of my pitchers I'm going to trade? 461 PA and his 2023 $15 MM option vests. Or do I pay him $7 MM this year for 450 PA?
Mark P
9:32
Attaching Andrus to one of Bassitt or Manaea is a logical option, if the A's are prioritizing just dumping money rather than maximizing prospect return.
9:33
Put it this way, if they can unload Andrus' deal, that might mean one less of Olson, Chapman, or Montas who gets dealt.  Also, the Rangers are paying a good chunk of Andrus' contract, so it isn't quite as onerous as it seems

Guardians 4 Life
9:35
Thoughts on the guardians offseason so far? We were expected to add payroll but haven’t yet. You think we do our business through trade once the trade market picks up after the lockout?
Mark P
9:36
Quite likely.  Cleveland hasn't really done much of anything yet, and still have plenty of holes to fill.

Now, if they've been busy coordinating with graphic designers for a more creative logo, all is forgiven!

When does Bautista have his number retired and go up on the Jays level of excellence?
Mark P
9:38
The Jays' policy seems to be that your number is only retired if you get into the HOF.  But as for the level of excellence, I imagine it's just a matter of time before Bautista is rightfully recognized
Ice Queen
9:40
Coldest baseball game you've ever attended was where?
Mark P
9:41
San Francisco.  I went there on vacation some years ago, enjoyed a lovely summer July day walking around the city in shorts and a t-shirt, then went to the Giants game that night in the same outfit and was freezing.
Hot Cakes
9:42
What's the hottest weather baseball game you've been to?
Mark P
9:43
Washington.  I was there on vacation during a week that was said to be one of the hottest weeks on record in the city's history.  We had tickets sitting in the sun for an afternoon Nats game and had to leave our seats after an inning since we were just getting cooked.
Draft Picks
9:43
Some teams like the Orioles like to trade international bonus money for more established minor leaguers.  Would teams do that with draft picks, if allowed?
Mark P
9:44
Potentially, sure.
Reds trade
9:45
Senzel and Gray to the Astros for McCormick and Urquidy
Mark P
9:46
That's an interesting one, but it creates a big hole in CF for Houston since Meyers is still hurt.  Theoretically Senzel could play center, but counting on Senzel to stay healthy is a big risk unto itself.
Also, the Astros probably expect Urquidy to be what, 80% or better of what Gray will do in 2022?  That trade doesn't work for Houston.
Geoff
9:47
Who will be the next A’s manager?
Mark P
9:48
Speculatively, Mark Kotsay or another internal name.  I would've said maybe Christenson but he just left to resume his role as Melvin's bench coach.
The Wings
9:48
Cleveland should have Wings cover band promotions
Mark P
9:48
But they already sent Hand On The Run last winter when they declined his option
9:49
......there it is.  That's the worst joke I'll ever make in these chats.  Mark your calendars, folks.
Matt Olson enjoyer
9:50
where will we be enjoying Matt Olson’s dingers next year?
Mark P
9:51
I'll zag a bit here and say there's a good chance he stays in Oakland.  The A's will almost surely prioritize the impending free agents (Manaea, Bassitt) first before getting to the players who have more than one year of control.  Also, reports have suggested that the A's aren't entirely throwing in the towel on 2022, so keeping Olson would be a good way to keep a lineup strong

underwhelmed by the return for Stallings? Or does GMBC know something most scribes don't?
