It wasn't a bad return, and I think Stallings' trade value might have been slightly overstated (based on some of the trade asks I've seen in these chats)
9:56
But the Pirates did get a pitcher in Thompson who is a candidate to start right away, and two other good prospects

Where will Kris Bryant end up
Mark P

Seattle still makes a lot of sense, that's my pick

The negative reaction from Boston fans regarding the Renfroe trade is boggling my mind – that is an extremely replaceable kind of player.  I guess you have to believe that the prospects are going to provide some value, but a 1.5-2 WAR corner outfielder is not the kind of guy you're going to miss, right?
Mark P

You'd think Boston fans would know first-hand just how good a defensive player Bradley is, and how glaring Boston's defensive issues were last year.

After my salty exit from M's, my obvious destination is Texas's hot corner.  Win Win.  Family reunion and 2022 revenge tour...thoughts?

Kyle signing with an AL West team just to haunt the Mariners would be pretty funny, but between Jung/IKF/maybe Seager, the Rangers seem pretty set for third base options.

Why is there such a hate for Sanchez with fans? Is it a result of such high expectations to begin the career? He is at or above league average in all hitting categories. Below league average in defense for sure.
Mark P
10:02
(Assuming you mean Gary Sanchez here)

NY fans have particularly high expectations of their players, so when Sanchez started out his career so well, the ceiling automatically went to "new Mike Piazza!"  Now that those numbers have fallen off, the knives are out in particularly sharp fashion.

Sanchez also isn't helping himself with the lack of defensive improvement.

It seems less and less teams are in white flag mode going forward, ya? Next year might be just Orioles, A's, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Nats
Mark P
10:04
Really, maybe even just Baltimore and Pittsburgh.  The A's aren't going to entirely check out, the Diamondbacks just signed Melancon, and I don't see the Nats mailing it in when they still have Soto in his prime.

On the flip side, you have a team like the Rockies, who may be trying, but just seem to be bad at trying.

Why do you answer questions from people pretending to be a player, GM or owner? Do they really have to stoop that low?
Mark P
10:05
I don't mind.  Put it this way....I 1000% percent prefer someone taking a player/GM/owner name than I do someone using an obviously offensive name that guarantees I won't answer their question

Groshans and Kirk for Jose Ramirez. Who says no ?
Mark P
10:06
Guardians.  They'd want far more for Ramirez.

Buxton's extension doesn't impact 2022 payroll much, which is still about $45 million less than last year's. The Twins need pitching and lots of innings signed for less than what Ervin Santana got almost a decade ago. Bundy doesn't move the needle for a "champioship-caliber team," as Thad Levine claims the Twins are. Why the inactivity? Even trade partners (Miami got their catcher) are going off the board. What are Falvine doing? Other than nothing, I mean.

Obligatory "it is still early December" answer, with the caveat that obviously this offseason's calendar is a little screwy.

The Buxton deal was unique enough that I can understand why the Twins would want to get that squared away before turning their attention to other matters.  Remember, if an extension hadn't been worked out, Buxton might well have been traded by now.

If Fletch is playing SS for the angels in 2022 who’s playing 2B?
Mark P
10:10
Maybe a Donovan Solano type, provided that the Angels then go big on spending on a pitcher

I always wonder if this would work: a system in which a team which extends a homegrown player (drafted, developed, debuted) gets a break on their luxury tax (maybe with some sort of limit on the number of such contracts they can sign per draft or in a certain number of years.) Seems like a win-win: teams get a bit of financial relief, players get a market-rate contract, and fans get to see their homegrown stars stick around. Feasible?
Mark P

That's an interesting idea, sort of a version of the "Larry Bird Rule" for baseball.

Is there any chance that European football-style promotion and relegation is part of the next CBA? Gotta believe that would stop teams from tanking?
Mark P
10:13
Not going to happen.  First of all, the MLB organizations have control over their affiliates anywhere, so there is no real "second division" for relegated teams to come from.
