Since the Giants did go after Bryce Harper when he was a free agent, they are open to pursuing a mega-deal for a player they think is the right fit.  But they might not see anyone on the current market as that right fit.

Now, that doesn't mean the Giants couldn't still acquire some big salaries as part of trades, which might also be part of the strategy considering how SF has so much payroll space to play with

Cano’s no trade clause is still in effect, right? I keep seeing Mets fans trying to figure out how to get out of his contract, but between the NTC and his desire to play in NY, isn’t eating the money their only way out?
Mark P
1:45
The NTC is still active, yes.  It isn't totally out of the question that Cano would accept a trade if he also wants a change of scenery, except there hasn't been any indication that this is the case.  If anything, he might be excited to return and play for a Mets team that looks like it'll contend.

What % of HOF votes will ARod and Big Papi get this year?
Mark P
1:46
Ortiz will get somewhere between 70-80%, either just barely getting in or barely missing out.  A-Rod maybe cracks the 50 percent threshold at best.

What would the White Sox need to add to a trade proposal of Kimbrel for Lux? I assume other moving pieces from both sides.
Mark P
1:49
The Dodgers are never trading Lux for one year of a relief pitcher, so it would have to be a much more elaborate multi-player trade.  I'm not sure the two sides are a great fit since both are in win-now mode, and LA would want a proven veteran talent back for Lux

Favourite Simpsons episode season 2-10 (the golden era)?

Oh man.  You could ask me again in five minutes and I might have a different answer but I've always particularly loved "$pringfield" (i.e. Mr. Burns opens the casino)

Omitting any current candidates and those that were on the Veterans Commission ballot, what are some players that you think should be in the Hall of Fame, but aren't?
Mark P

Fred McGriff, Lou Whitaker, and Fred McGriff immediately leap to mind
Dave

If the A’s insist on getting Volpe or Dominguez for Matt Olson, does that kill the trade?
Mark P
1:53
Quite likely
1:54
Unless this "omg, we surely can't trade Volpe, he's the next Derek Jeter!....sighhh, fine, maybe for Olson..." is a brilliant smokescreen on the Yankees' part

You can’t get in the HOF twice, you have McGriff twice.
Mark P
1:55
Ha, that was a typo on my part, not a clever message that McGriff is overdue.  I meant to write Bobby Grich

Any talk of minor league players unionizing? Many are paid under min wage when you factor in all the weight room and extra training they do.
Mark P
1:56
There has been increased talk of a minor league players union, though such a thing may be years away from becoming a reality

Am I the only person that thinks Shogo Akiyama could be a productive player?  When he was getting consistent playing time at the end of 2020 he was looking good.
Mark P
1:58
Akiyama is tough to gauge because of his lack of playing time and the fact that he came over to a new league in the midst of a pandemic, but he also hasn't had very good results as a big leaguer.  It could be that an enterprising team feels Akiyama can still unlock something, and if such a team exists, the Reds would likely be on the phone with them ASAP once the lockout is over

Other than for this year, how does a 1-year contract to Story help the Red Sox next year, when Xander can walk?
Mark P
2:02
Having Story on a one-year deal would be a boon to a lot of teams, Boston included.  The idea would be to see if they like Story, and if there's mutual interest, work out a longer-term contract the next winter once Story has gotten a taste of Fenway Park.  That at least provides the Red Sox with a backup option if/when Bogaerts does opt out.

But, that said, it still seems early to assume that Story is open to one-year deals to rebuild his value, especially since there are still some prominent teams with shortstop vacancies

Would Conforto be an option in St. Louis?   Especially on a 1-year "prove it deal".     Also wonder if Josh Bell would be available in the trade market?     Short term pop would make sense for a team like the Cardinals... wouldn't it?
Mark P
2:06
The DH makes Bell a possible fit, except then you'd be locking up the DH spot every game with either Bell or Goldschmidt.  Conforto is the more interesting idea, as you can juggle playing time around the outfield.

If you could start at the beginning of the offseason as general manager of any team which would you choose and why?
Mark P

I guess the Giants, due to the sheer amount of possibilities at my disposal.

What happens with arbitration this year? Will there be a mad rush of negotiations and arbitration hearings during a protracted spring training?

Yep
