More player chats on the way?
Mark P

Indeed!  More are being arranged, so stay tuned

Is tonight a steamed hams or a double burger kind of night?

Are the Jays best off trading prospects or Catcher/OF surplus for:

  • a SP
  • a 3B
  • a 2B (or SS)
  • an OF (moving Teoscar to mainly DH)
Mark P
5:38
The "Albany Steamed Hams" was my fantasy baseball team name for a couple of seasons

I see pitching or infield help (probably a 3B) being the Jays' likelier routes.  One needs could address another, such as if they deal from their OF surplus and move Gurriel or Grichuk, for instance, I can see Toronto then pivoting for another outfielder
Bob Melvin’s Agent
5:40
If Eric Chavez going to the Mets from the Yankees not such a big deal and it’s considered bad form to hold someone back from a better position - why is Bob Melvin going from the A’s to the Padres painted as a salary dump?
Mark P
5:41
Melvin went from one managerial job to another, so it wasn't a promotion.  You'd think the A's would've put up more of a fight or asked the Padres for some compensation since Melvin was still under contract for 2022, but instead it seemed like they just let him walk

They certainly don't serve steamed hams in Utica!
Has all the reported interest in Seiya Suzuki made you rethink MLBTR's 5/55 prediction for him? And could you see him sticking in Japan due to the lockout? I saw that it's basically unheard of for Japanese players to miss the start of spring training, which is 2/1!
Mark P
5:42
I think there is a very distinct chance Suzuki just ends up cutting his posting period short to remain in Japan on a one-year deal.
Beyond the 20 days remaining in his posting period, he and his reps surely have some kind of a personal deadline date in mind for when Suzuki can still pivot back to NPB.
Farhan
5:43
When Farhan made his end of season address to the media, do you think he did so with the idea that Buster might retire? The reason i ask is because I really think the Giants front office might change their toon on sighting Kris Bryant to a long term commitment or someone else? What are your thoughts?
Mark P
5:44
I strongly doubt Posey retired without giving the Giants some kind of a heads-up, so the front office had likely already made its mind up about Bryant
5:45
Keep in mind, Zaidi didn't say "there is no way we're bringing Kris Bryant back," so the door won't be totally closed until Bryant has officially signed elsewhere.  But, by all reports, it doesn't seem like the Giants are making a real push to re-sign him

Hey, thanks for the  chats. Sure helps yours truely get through this dismal off season.
Mark P

My pleasure.  For my own part, I love kicking back and just talking baseball

Do players go home with team directed workout plans for the offseason? Or, with the lockout, are they more-or-less on their own doing what they have done in the past?
Mark P
5:49
Pre-lockout, I would presume team staffers gave players plans for offseason training, augmenting whatever personal training regiments those players were already following.  So that part isn't really a problem, but the issue would be if someone were to get hurt during the lockout, or if a player in injury rehab had a setback of some kind.
Anthony

do you think it’s more likely that Chaim Bloom goes after Seiya Suzuki or Kris Bryant?
Mark P

Suzuki
Tiger Fan
5:51
Any word on a salary ceiling for Detroit? Could they reasonably afford Rodon on top of their previous additions?
Mark P
5:51
Sure, since the Tigers have less than $117MM on the books for next year
5:52
I don't think you're going to see the Tigers go on a Texas-like mega-spree, but adding Rodon and another notable player isn't out of the question
Bad Contract Swap
5:54
Justin Upton and $6.5 million for Didi Gregorious!  We need a left handed hitting SSS with some power and they need an outfielder who could have a monster season!
Mark P
5:55
It's been a while since Upton has had a "monster season," so that might be expecting a lot.  Plus, Upton has a no-trade clause and reportedly isn't keen on playing anywhere outside of the west
ArchieBradley's Beard
5:55
At this point, I cannot imagine the season starting on time. Do you think there's any possibility of the season being canceled altogether?
Mark P
5:56
No.  While I do think the sides are dug into their positions, I cannot fathom they'd actually lose an entire season, especially in the wake of the pandemic.  That's the type of thing that would threaten to destroy interest in the sport altogether
HEY MARK!!!!!
5:56
Who do you think will be the bench coach for the Mets?
Mark P
5:57
I mean, I sent in my resume, so I assume it's just a matter of time before I get a phone call.

Do the Rangers have any more tricks up their sleeve?
Mark P
5:58
I definitely think the Rangers will do (and spend) more after the lockout
Their pitching staff still needs a lot of work, for instance

I  can't believe that the Red Sox gave up on the production of Renfro with out a plan to replace that offense. Since the trade I had always felt his replacement would be Seiya Suzuki. Reasonable years and money compared to the high roller free agents, No need to give up a prospect or draft choice, etc. But if, as you just speculated, this lockout is extended and Seiya Suzuki returns to his former league in Japan, what do the Sox do to replace that umph!
Mark P
6:01
The Sox can look at other hitters if Suzuki does stay in Japan, or signs with another MLB team.

And I didn't mind the Renfroe trade at all.  Boston already has plenty of offense besides Renfroe, but their big problem was defense, and Bradley is one of the best defensive outfielders around.  Between the added prospects from the Brewers and the chance that JBJ's bat rebounds in Fenway, that trade makes a lot of logical sense for the Sox
Joint Task Force
6:04
I am wondering if this is true; I know players often choose to sign with teams because of time zones or the idea of less travel - but how many sign in states like Florida, Texas or Washington because there is no state income tax?
Mark P
6:04
That's certainly a factor in some cases, which I'm sure made the Rangers' big offers even more appealing

Time for a poll: Do the Cubs win 81 games next year?
Mark P

Do the Cubs win at least 81 games next season?

Yes (24.4% | 143 votes)

No (75.6% | 444 votes)

Could Julio Rodriguez get a Wander Franco type deal? Maybe a bit less as Franco plays SS and was higher-rated (barely) as a prospect.
Mark P
6:08
I think that definitely seems like a possibility.  Keep in mind that the M's are no strangers to the "pre-career" contract (i.e. Evan White) themselves, and would surely jump at the chance to lock up Rodriguez before his first season or after.

Is freddie freeman going to the HoF
Mark P
6:09
He's putting together a pretty nice case, and the MVP and the championship both help.  I'd have to guess that staying with the Braves would also boost his chances since voters tend to like "one team" types of franchise players, but it's not like Freeman would suffer if he signed elsewhere and continued to slug
