How much is the Bauer situation going to impact the Dodger’s ability to add payroll?
Mark P
6:25
I don't think to any huge extent.  Surely at the time of the signing, the Dodgers were prepared for a scenario where Bauer accepted the club options.  Plus, it seems like Bauer will face a suspension of some kind, so some of his salary will be coming back
Waiting For Agreement
6:25
Any idea when the players association will want to make a counter-proposal to the owners?
Mark P
6:26
The offer floated by the owners this past week came quicker than expected, so the MLBPA's counter might come relatively soon
Guardians Guy
6:26
Compared to last year and this years expected payroll of $50mil, is this the year where some money is finally spent?
Mark P
6:27
There's so little money on the books that it would seem negligent if the Guardians don't do at least some spending, since getting even one reliable outfielder would make this team look so much better

If the CBA is so tilted against the players, why did they agree to it last time?  Extending one season would have been a better option.  The MLBPA could put their pride aside and do it for the fans.  Hopefully it's a moot point and we have a normal 2022.
Mark P
6:32
By all accounts, it seems like the MLBPA didn't realize how tilted the last CBA was until after the fact, and draft penalties emerged as such a huge spending deterrent for teams.

And, why is the onus on the MLBPA to "put their pride aside" and continue playing under a contract they don't like?
Astros

Who plays ss and cf?
Mark P
6:33
McCormick/Siri/Meyers in CF, and it's looking like they'll give Pena a shot at the everyday SS job

Do you see the Buxton contract as something more teams will use (more incentive laden)?
Mark P
6:35
Possibly, though Buxton was maybe a singularly unique case --- a player with such a high ceiling but such a lengthy injury history.
Adam
6:35
Who the greatest baseball player you’ve seen play? Mine would be ken Griffey jr
Mark P
6:36
In person?  Barry Bonds
Shawn
6:36
Not allowed to trade international prospect money anymore
Mark P
6:36
For the last two int'l periods, true.  And perhaps not going forward, depending on how the rules may change
Don
6:37
Would you rather have Daniels or Preller at the head of a baseball ops department?
Mark P
6:37
Jon Daniels, better track record

Is Greinke planning a reunion with the Dodgers?
Mark P
6:39
There hasn't been any real buzz about Greinke, but a relatively low-cost return to L.A. might make sense for both sides.

There’s been a lot of talk about the Giants’ need for a right-handed power hitter, but with Solano seemingly on the way out and LaStella recovering from surgery, isn’t second base also a priority?
Mark P
6:40
Assuming La Stella is okay, a platoon of La Stella/Flores can be productive, not to mention what guys like Estrada or Dubon can chip in

Though I love the top 3 of the Brewers rotation, I feel like the best way to improve the offense is to deal from it. Who provides the most trade value? Woodruff (consistent and durable) Burnes (upside), Peralta (contract)?
Mark P
6:42
I'd like to counter this entire premise, actually.  If you have three top starters, hang onto them!

If I'm the Brewers and want to deal a starter for a bat, it'll be Lauer or Houser (or mayyyyybe Ashby) before I get around to moving any of the top guys
MoKo
6:44
of the teams rumored to be on Seiya Suzuki, pick one you don’t believe he’ll sign with; also pick a team that would surprise most people for signing him
Mark P
6:45
I don't think he's a great fit on the Yankees, given all their other outfielders.

And picking a "mystery team" is tricky, but....Detroit?

Why aren't certain organizations successful at developing players consistently? I'm aware that there's an innumerable amount of factors that come into that question, but some teams (e.g., Pirates, Rangers, Angels) really seem to struggle with it. Thoughts?
Mark P
6:47
I don't know if this is necessarily the reason, but one thing you hear over and over from organizations is uniformity up and down the minor league ladder.  So at every level, or from every roving instructor, a prospect is hearing the same message and the same tips, as opposed to one single-A hitting coach saying one thing and a Double-A hitting coach saying another.

This kind of specialized instruction for every individual player seems more logical than a '
"too many cooks" approach

with one year left before free agency, do you see the Cubs moving Contreras before the season? If so, what teams do you see trading for him?
Mark P
6:49
I think the Cubs ultimately would still look to move Contreras if they got a decent offer, especially with Gomes in place to carry the load as a semi-everyday catcher.
I'm far from the only one to suggest this, but Contreras to the Yankees make sense for both parties

Between all the different hitting coaches Mike Bryant and the Cubs FO all wanting to change Kris Bryant's hitting style, do you as I think caused Kris to go from super star to above average player? I do realize the injuries also hurt.
Mark P
6:51
These could all be factors, certainly.

I think it's also fair to point out that it's hard to be a great MLB player, and even harder to keep up the sustained production that truly turns a player from star to superstar.  There's a good chance we've already seen the peak of Bryant, and his future production might be closer to being just "good" rather than MVP candidate

I was hoping Melky would get to 2,000 hits, but he still had a good career.
Mark P
6:53
Indeed, a pretty terrific career for the Melk Man
Bill
6:53
Will Mattingly get into HOF down the road?
Mark P
6:53
If he gets a favorable set of peers on a future veterans committee, maybe.  But overall, I think Mattingly falls short on the longevity argument.

How is it that likely signing teams are so clearly identified ahead of the International Signing Day by Baseball American and other publications? Is there a lot of pre-Signing Day negotiations, does it have to do with the team that has been tracking the prospect the longest/closest, or is it a "best fit" kind of guesstimating?
Mark P
6:57
Teams have had deals in place with these kids for a couple of years, in many cases.  It is pretty widely known information by the time the actual signing period begins.  I think Ben Badler and the MLB Pipeline guys had pretty much all of the 2022 field forecasted at least six months ago
