If I had to pick one as a possible trade chip, I'd say Cartaya since Smith is already a proven element

Will all the top FAs sign once a deal is reached? Or do you see some waiting trying to squeeze out extra money from teams, even if they sit during spring training?
Mark P
7:20
Given the sheer volume of players on the market, it seems very possible that a prominent name or two is left sidelined if no team is willing to meet their price, and the free agent is unwilling to sign for a below-market deal

What does a Kim and Paddack trade cost the Cubs?
Mark P
7:22
This would be an interesting move by the Padres, as while Kim doesn't have the price tag of a Hosmer or a Myers, moving him would still get a prominent salary off of SD's books.

The risk for the Padres, of course, is that they'd be selling low on both Kim and Paddack.  And the Cubs or other teams might balk at SD asking for a strong return in a trade, given how both players did much in 2021.

If MLBTR becomes a movie, who would you want to play Mark Polishuk?
Mark P
7:25
Streep's got plenty of range
Nick

Do you buy the hype that Anthony Volpe is the next Derek Jeter?
Mark P
7:26
Nope.  Which is a lot of pressure to put on a young prospect, and why such comparisons are silly

RIP, If the Reds are out of playoff contention, do you see them dealing all of their tradeable assets and starting over?  Also do you see Joe Burrow holding up the Vince Lombardi trophy tomorrow night?
Mark P
7:29
WKRP was a terrific show.  It was a little before my time but I caught plenty of syndicated reruns growing up.

A total fire sale is possible, since the Reds have already been indicating that they've stretched their budget too far.  But, unless they completely crater to 100-loss levels or something, I think they'd still try to regroup for 2023 given how much of their core is still under contract for that year

Keep Vaughn as successor to Abreu or trade asset?  Sheets is in the discussion.  RH 1B aren't to difficult to find.
Mark P
7:31
Of the two, Vaughn is the higher-regarded prospect bat, so Sheets is probably the likelier trade candidate (assuming the OF isn't feasible)

The Rays are the only current MLB team to never host an All-Star Game, will it ever be held in The Trop?
Mark P
7:33
My local sports complex down the block has a better chance of hosting the ASG than the Trop.
In fact, let's make that happen, MLB.

"At diamond #2: rec league softball.  At diamond #3: the Major League all-star game."

A big contingent of passionate Philly fans want to move Nola a la Nick Foles, but Nola's peripherals are excellent.....thoughts...?
Mark P
7:37
That would strike me as a mistake, given how the Phils were already short on rotation depth last year

I get the players don’t want any type of cap system. However, doesn’t the NBA system seem like a great idea…teams can re-sign their free agents for more money than the other teams. Give the young prospects their “Bird Rights” to get paid. MLB has to know their current system of keeping good young players down to
Mark P

It's two vastly different set of issues in MLB and in the NBA, however.  Since having one superstar player can make or break a basketball team, the NBA's challenge is to come up with ways to incentivize players staying in one place, and giving teams some leverage in re-signing their players.

With MLB, the issue is that teams only seem to want their stars when they're young and cheap, and then get looking to dump those players as they age (no matter if the player is still producing or not)

We assume Adley will be up after he gets his service time manipulated, but what about Grayson Rodriguez?
Mark P
7:41
Rodriguez already made his Double-A debut last year, so if all goes well, I can see him hitting the bigs for a late-season cameo
Chaim Bloom
7:43
I have a decent farm system to bargain with...do I use it for starting pitching or bullpen help.
Mark P
7:43
If anything, rotation help.  I suspect Bloom feels he can find relief pitching without having to give up any kind of significant prospect

Name your top three fanbases that you would like to see rewarded with a World series in the next five years. For me, it's Seattle, San Diego and Cleveland.
Mark P
7:44
The Toronto, Buffalo, and Dunedin fanbases.

(as a Jays fan, I may be slightly biased on this question)

I saw a chat where you said 28 mil was a bargain for DiDi do you take back those comments?
Mark P
7:48
The Phillies' deal seemed reasonable at the time, considering that Gregorius played well in 2020 and seemed to have bounced back nicely from 2019.

However....

Are there a small group of owners who dominate  the league’s negotiations or are all basically on the same page?
Mark P
7:49
Some owners certainly have more influence than others, and there are also certainly owners whose interests in the CBA vary greatly.  A CBA will impact the Dodgers much differently than it will the Pirates, for instance.

Better chance for a rebound: Yelich or Lindor

With Story not wanting to change positions would Seattle still have interest or do they turn their sights to Bryant now?
Mark P
7:52
Story might end up having to switch positions if that's his only route to a big contract.

However, I also kind of wonder just how firm the Mariners are about keeping Crawford at shortstop.  Crawford is a good defensive player but he isn't exactly Ozzie Smith.....in fact, depending on what metric you look at, Story is actually the better defender.

Who ya got in tomorrow’s game?
Mark P
7:54
The Timberwolves should be able to beat the Pacers, but it'll be close.
7:55
Oh, if you meant the Super Bowl, I like the Rams
Mark G
7:56
Would Groshans, Pearson, and Gurriel Jr get Chapman?
Mark P
7:56
Yes, but the Blue Jays aren't willing to give up that much

Why does everyone think I’m going to trade Brian Reynolds?
