Because rival fans love to speculate about their teams taking a star away from a rebuilding club.

And also because, simply, it isn't out of the question that the Pirates would deal Reynolds.
Dipoto
7:59
If you're the GM, do you promise a player he won't be displaced (JP Crawford) if there are better options out there such as Correa or Story?  I think this was a mistake.
Mark P
8:00
GMs aren't actually allowed to specifically say "no, we're not in on this player or that player."  So I do wonder if Dipoto's statements were sort of an unofficial way of saying that the M's would be sitting out the shortstop sweepstakes, unless a bargain could be found or if someone was willing to play another position.

It isn't like the M's are unwilling to spend overall, as shown by the Robbie Ray deal

Is Villar an improvement over Garcia as an everyday 2B?
Mark P
8:04
For certain.  If Villar was able to replicate his 2021 numbers, the White Sox could happily take that in 2022.  Plus, that would allow Chicago to keep moving Leury around the diamond, which is his most valuable asset

Any word on Josh Naylor and his recovery?  Is he a viable option in one of the outfield corners or is he better coming off the bench?
Mark P
8:07
As of early December, Naylor was coming along well, according to reports.  I would guess the Guardians ease him back into action in the minors and then maybe in a DH/bench role at the big league level.  If his leg can handle it, more outfield time will come

If i trade grichuk for gray and agree to eat mooses contract, what else would I have to toss in to get nick to say yes?
Mark P
8:11
(Ross Atkins, Jays GM)

Grichuk is a bit of a salary dump himself from the Jays' perspective, so I would think Toronto would have to add a decent prospect (and maybe another minor leaguer thrown in) to get Cincy's attention
MiLB and Rookies in Union
8:12
I’m often confused about the objectives the MLBPA brings into labor bargaining. If player reps are mostly veterans (often stars) what is their incentive to fight for MiLBers and rookies?
Mark P
8:14
Minor leaguers aren't members of the MLBPA, and can't join until they're actually major leaguers.  I'm far from an expert on labor laws so I may be wrong about this, but I believe there are limits about how much a union can advocate for affiliated peoples outside of its own membership.

Frankly, I think the league used this to its advantage in the last two CBAs.  By focusing on ways to financially limit non-union players (via draft and international signing pools), that limited player expenditures for players the union couldn't advocate for

Will the Dodgers lock up Trea Turner or let him hit free agency
Mark P
8:15
I'm leaning towards an extension, though Turner won't know his asking price until he sees what Correa and Story (in addition to Seager, Semien, Baez) sign for
JT
8:17
Do you think it would be smart for the Yankees to keep Luis Severino in a relief role to begin the season, and slowly switch him back to a starter as the season goes on to prepare him for postseason starts? That way he's able to keep a logical innings limit?
Mark P
8:18
That route would make some sense, as there's no real set gameplan for dealing with a pitcher who has missed as much time as Severino has.  He obviously isn't going to pitch a full season's workload, so maximizing the value of his innings seems like a good strategy

If the season is canceled, how much would it effect the competitive window for the Brewers or Mariners?
Mark P
8:20
The Mariners not so much, since much of their core is still young.  It would be a huge blow to the Brewers, since their window might not be open much longer given how many of their top players are nearing free agency (and are getting more expensive in arbitration).

Though, it should be noted, if things get bad enough that we reach the "canceled season" phase, who knows what the next CBA will look like

Did the Guardians screw themselves by protecting 11 players from the rule 5 draft? Some are not ready for the majors and cant participate in minor league spring training because of the lookout.
Mark P
8:20
But the alternative is then losing those players for nothing in the Rule 5, so I can't blame the Guardians for wanting to retain everyone.
8:21
Quite possible that Cleveland could still trade one or two of those youngsters once the lockout is over, however
Bob Melvin
8:24
Does it make more sense for me to use the DH role as a way for guys to have days off rather than sticking one player in that spot?
Mark P
8:24
I generally think that for most teams, that's a more ideal use for the DH spot
Armchair GM
8:26
Of the different moves the Astros GM, Click, could make, which one would you do?    Re-sign Correa to 8 years/$300M? Story to 7 years/$220M?   Bryant to 5 years/$150M? Schwarber 4 years/$100M?
Mark P
8:27
Am I allowed to pick none of the above?  If the Astros do plan to give Pena a look at shortstop, that frees up money to be spent at another area, except neither Schwarber or Bryant are exactly great fits for Houston's needs
JeffR
8:28
Would the Dodgers be willing to include Muncey in a trade package with the A's for Olsen and would the A's want him?
Mark P
8:29
If the A's goal in moving Olsen is to save money, adding Muncy doesn't really help on that front.

Besides, Oakland already has a Max Muncy in their organization!

Would Marsh plus Suarz get us Castillo from the Reds?
Mark P
8:32
The Reds would probably want a little more, but Marsh/Suarez is a good start

8:32
Who do you think will be the shortstop for the Twins in the upcoming season? Is it possible that they will make a run for Story?
Mark P
8:34
The Twins had at least looked into Robbie Ray, so know they're somewhat open to the idea of a bigger expenditure this winter.  Signing Story would lock down the shortstop position for years, however, which the Twins may not want to do until they know more about Royce Lewis and Austin Martin as viable big leaguers
Dick Allen is a Hall of Famer
8:35
Not paying minor leaguers seems like cruelty for its own sake.
Mark P
8:37
It make no sense to me on both an ethical or practical levels.  We're not talking a huge amount of extra money here for team that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Robby
8:37
What kind of year will Mike Trout have this year?
Mark P
8:38
Assuming he stays healthy, I have no reason to believe Trout wouldn't still be an MVP candidate
TRangers
8:40
How soon after the lockout do they trade a Duran or Foscue? Or would developing them another year seem prudent. I may be the only one that thinks with signing a Kershaw and one of Suzuki/Conforto puts them in position for....some more things to fall in place to get 90 wins lol.
Mark P
8:42
The Rangers have their middle infield set for the foreseeable future, so suddenly prospects like Foscue and Duran are expendable.  Wouldn't be shocked to see Texas move at least one of them, or someone from their middle infield list now that Seager and Semien are in town.

Pitching should be the main goal, since even if Kershaw did sign, that rotation would still be quite thin
Vottomatic
8:42
Will I every play in Toronto..my home crowd? Could Cincy do a salary dump with prospects?
Mark P
8:44
Votto has been pretty adamant over the years about never leaving Cincinnati, and he has the no-trade protection to control his fate.

Plus, there have been rumblings over the years that Votto would prefer to not play in his hometown, to keep his professional life and personal life more separate.  This is hardly uncommon among players, by the way.
