Mariners win 95+ wins in 2022 over/under
Mark P
5:23
There's a lot of offseason left for Seattle to make additions, but I'll still take the under just because it's really hard to win 95 games
Josh
5:24
If the Padres can't trade Hosmer, at what point do they consider a DFA?
Mark P
5:25
I think some type of trade can or will be worked out.  But, Hosmer becomes a 10-and-5 player after this season, so if the Padres want to move him, time is running out
Spencer Torkelson
5:26
What will his numbers look like this year? - assuming a 162 game season
Mark P
5:27
Assuming he plays in a good chunk of that 162 games without much service-time trickery.....at least a 20-homer, .800 OPS campaign seems pretty feasible.

I've made the point before, however, that it's unfair to expect even star prospects to immediately be great once they hit the big leagues.  If Torkelson doesn't hit well in 2022, he isn't suddenly a bust or a trade chip.

Chances Vladdy shifts back to third and the Jays get another first baseman?
Mark P
5:28
Slim to none.  I doubt Vlad sees any real time at 3B ever again, barring maybe a late-game appearance due to other lineup changes, or maybe a random start in the event of injuries
Re: Nats

Would Luis Garcia (WSH) be interesting to CHW as a cheap 2B? Or too green?
Mark P
5:30
I'm sure the Sox would have plenty of interest in Garcia, it wasn't too long ago that he was a top-100 prospect type.  He hasn't done much yet at the MLB level, which is naturally some concern for a White Sox team that wants to win now, but that would be a risk Chicago would be willing to take if they could obtain him

5:31
Which Jays catcher do you think is the odd one out
Mark P
5:32
McGuire in the sense that he is the only one that doesn't seem to have any chance of being a long-term answer in Toronto.

But, in terms of who's most likely to be traded, I suspect Kirk.  Moreno is untouchable and the Jays like Jansen's defense, so Kirk might be seen as the most expendable of that trio.  And, Kirk has a lot more trade value than McGuire

5:32
Chance of Portland, OR or Vancouver, BC ever getting a team? Expansion or relocation?
Mark P
5:32
Portland has a decent shot.  I'd be surprised if Vancouver was on MLB's shortlist for a new team location.
DM KC GM
5:33
Burger and Sheets to KC for Merrifield?
Mark P
5:33
Zero chance for this.  The Royals aren't moving Merrifield within the division, and would want more for him anyway

5:35
I'm not sure what my feelings on it are.... but doesn't Tommy Pham to Milwaukee just seem too perfect? Especially with the recent open-ness to playing 1B... toolsy multi positional players... and rangy high obp OFs are kinda of David Stearns' jam, if no one noticed....
Mark P
5:36
The Brewers immediately came to mind when I saw that Pham item yesterday.  He'd be a nice right-handed complement to Tellez at 1B, and could get some DH and outfield at-bats
Ed
5:36
How can Mets upgrade at Catcher? Can they still have McCann or does he need to be part of a deal. Can they improve while he splits time?
Mark P
5:38
For now, the Mets might just have to see if 2021 was an off-year for McCann.  If he struggles again this season, they'll start exploring a change, but don't forget that Alvarez might be in the majors even by the end of this year.

5:39
Does a Grichuk for Kiermaer package make sense for both teams? Jays get a lefty bat who can spell Springer in centre, and Rays get a cheaper bat with a bit more power. Or does the whole stealing the sign card thing make that a hard sell?
Mark P
5:41
This is another swap that might not happen just because both teams are in the same division.  Plus, trading for Grichuk would actually put more money on the Rays' long-term books, which they likely aren't keen on doing
Raul
5:42
Can Christian Yelich make a comeback? He has slowed down every year to make me think he can’t.
Mark P
5:44
This is the biggest question hanging over the Brewers right now, and there's no easy answer.  If Yelich's back problems aren't going away and they're sapping his power, that's a nightmare for both he and the Brewers.  If a full offseason of rest can get him back on track, maybe 2020-21 can be written off as blips on the radar

5:45
If you were taking BP in front of scouts, could you achieve a 20 power grade?
Mark P
5:45
I was once cut from a house league baseball team, so no.
CJT
5:46
Voit for Olson swap ?
Mark P
5:46
One-for-one, absolutely not.  Voit and two top-tier New York prospects, maybe.
Takesawalk
5:47
While I know that sooner or later the two sides will come to an agreement, do you expect there to be residual hard feelings that will reflect themselves in moves by management to otherwise reduce salary...cutting players loose with 30 days pay, lower offers to remaining Free Agents, more manipulation of service timeetc?
Mark P
5:48
Unless there is a specific rule prohibiting something, we can safely assume that front offices will always use every loophole possible to save money
Whitesox
5:49
Since Kopech most likely will be limited to 120+ Innings this year and DK needing to show improvement, do Lopez and Crochet see increased innings with spot starts this season? Or do they need to bring in another starting quality arm. Sonny Gray?
Mark P
5:50
A Lopez/Crochet piggyback system might be interesting, or using both in old-school swingman roles.

There was a Crochet item the other day pointing out that he doesn't really have much track record as a starter at all....didn't start that often in college, and he hasn't pitched at all in the minors.  So some buildup is naturally required, perhaps in an official game setting beyond just Spring Training.

5:50
could buster posey possibly come back and DH on the giants for a year?
Mark P
5:51
Posey is officially done, he didn't leave any Tom Brady-esque wiggle room within his retirement announcement.
Frank
5:52
DD returns to the Bronx to man SS?
Mark P
5:53
I'm sure the Phillies would have interest in making that happen, but even if the Yankees did want just a stopgap type, Gregorius didn't do much to inspire confidence in 2021
philsfan
5:53
why are the phillies looking to upgrade ss when stout is staring them in the face
Mark P
5:54
Stott might eventually be the answer at 2B or 3B, depending on what happens with Segura or Bohm.
Aldo
5:55
would lars nootbaar have any significant trade value?  Particularly for a late innings reliever?
Mark P
5:56
Teams would be interested in a controllable player who has shown flashes of promise, but I wouldn't expect STL to get any type of top-tier reliever (outside of a salary dump situation) in return.

Then again, given the list of hitters who immediately improved after leaving the Cardinals, maybe teams should be more keen on Lars
