Since Laureano is arb-controlled through 2024, I suspect the A's will still hang onto him (barring a huge offer from another team that is too good to pass up)

at this rate, Pirates are adding a starting pitcher or two at the deadline, no?
Mark P
8:21
I wonder what the Twins would want for Chris Archer?
(I'm sorry Pirates fans, that was a low blow.)
Jbeck
8:21
Better chance at returning to MVP level Cody bellinger or Yelich?
Mark P
8:22
Bellinger has looked great so far, so he has the big lead in the "return to form" race
Joey
8:23
Feels like we are getting close to when prospects start getting called up do u see Diamondbacks calling up Alek Thomas
Mark P
8:24
I think we're already at or near the "extra year of control" cutoff point, and the D'Backs could wait a bit longer to ensure that Thomas doesn't get Super Two qualification. But I do suspect Thomas will be in the majors by July
Kevin H
8:26
Think Nellie Cruz has a legitimate shot at 500?
Mark P
8:27
Cruz is sitting on 451 homers, but he's off to a brutal start this season and was only average after being dealt to Tampa last year.  I've learned that writing off Nelson Cruz is a fool's errand, but at his age, a sudden dropoff wouldn't be surprising
Space City
8:28
Is Kyle Tucker going to turn this slump around soon and play at nan all-star caliber again or is he
Mark P
8:28
According to the advanced metrics, Tucker has been brutally unlucky thus far, so a hot streak seems inevitable

Please tell our fans---Short sample size-We have only been playing for a few weeks!  It's been cold and windy in some of those places!
Mark P
8:32
Between the weather, defensive shifts, and the fact that pitching just has more advantages over hitting right now, it's a tough time to be a batter.  On the plus side, at least we aren't seeing a no-hitter every other day.

With no contract extension, does Shane Bieber become the most pursed pitcher at the trade deadline ?
Baseball fan
8:35
is baseball still keeping the ghost runner for extra innings games
Mark P
8:36
Only for this season, ostensibly, but players and managers seem to like the idea of avoiding lengthy extra-innings games.

I would still prefer a tweak where the ghost runner is added to first base in the 10th, and then to second base for any future innings.
8:37
Oops, forgot to get to Walter's question!  Bieber isn't likely to be dealt since he's under arbitration control through 2024.
Safeco
8:38
Several highly touted rookies -- Julio Rodrigues, Bobby Witt, etc. -- are having brutal seasons so far. At what point do teams start offering psychological counseling to settle down the kids? They all have talent but can't put it together.
Mark P
8:39
I feel like I've posted this exact answer in multiple chats over the years, but....it is very normal for prospects (even star prospects) to struggle in their first looks in the majors.  Some need a few weeks, few months, or even a few years before things click.

Who do you think will buy the naming rights to Dodger Stadium?
Mark P
8:41
Billy Joel, who will re-name the ballpark after his most famous film role --- the voice of Dodger in "Oliver & Company"
Dodgers
8:44
Should the rest of the league be worried about how good the Dodgers have been this year and Betts, Justin Turner and Muncy have been ice cold and with Bellinger being good again so far? Seems like a scary good team.
Mark P
8:44
You're correct.  Another 100+ wins seems quite likely.  The Dodgers' depth is flat out impressive
Cleveland
8:45
If anyone on the reds is available, what would it take to get Tyler Stephenson?
Mark P
8:46
Addendum: by "anyone," I mean pretty much any veteran making serious money.  Stephenson has five years of team control, so he isn't being traded unless the Reds take the unlikely step of completely blowing up the roster
I challenge Mark to answer this question
8:46
Home team's pitcher has a perfect game through 9 innings, the game is still 0-0 going into the 10th, home team pitcher allows the Ghost Runner to score the winning run in the top of the 10th without any batter reaching base safely in the 10th, is it still a perfect game even though the home pitcher lost?
Mark P
8:47
MLB only counts a no-hitter or perfect game as official if the team actually wins the game, so in this situation, the perfecto wouldn't count.

This is perhaps the chief reason why I don't care for the ghostrunner rule, since if this scenario actually happened, it would be chaos
A's
8:48
Was our "collapse" "full scale sell off" overplayed by the media?
Mark P
8:50
The A's still have talent on their roster, but I don't expect them to be in contention for the playoffs or anything.

And if a team deals Olson, Bassitt, Manaea, and Chapman all within a month's time, yeah, it's a selloff, even if not a "full-scale" Baltimore style rebuild
Bloom

Should we be starting Whitlock for the rest of the season
Mark P
8:50
Yup

8:52
The MLB rulebook clearly stated in regard to the ghost baserunner rule that a pitcher can be awarded a perfect game if his team loses.
Mark P
8:53
Hmm, clearly I need to check the rulebook.  But, that still seems silly to "officially" consider something a perfect game when the team doesn't actually win
Cal
8:54
Cards fan here but is David Bednar the best kept secret in baseball? Hope today was a precursor to him getting more save opportunities.
Mark P
8:54
I'd be stunned if teams hadn't been calling Pirates GM Ben Cherington on the reg about Bednar's availability.
