Seattle Mariners
8:55
Are we having good luck or are we legit?
Mark P
8:56
I think they're legit.  And hey, there's been plenty of luck going around in Seattle, given all the one-run games the Mariners won last year
No hitter
8:57
Team can also lose on no hitters.   This has happened 2x in MLB history. The team/player would need to pitch 9 innings, so the losing team will have to be the home team though.
Mark P
8:58
I remember the old Matt Young/Andy Hawkins losing no-hitters back in the day, but my impression was that MLB changed their rules so that "officially," those games weren't considered proper no-hitters.

What groovy tune do you have on the Playlist today?
Mark P

"Because The Night" by Patti Smith

Can I have a non-bias critique of the Pirates? What should be done next to improve?
Mark P
9:02
I don't think the Pirates are going to suddenly pivot and add veterans in a push to win.  Even if they're still in contention at the deadline, they'd make only a modest upgrade or two since the big-picture view hasn't changed.

By all accounts, Pittsburgh has a sterling minor league system.  Cruz will be up soon, to get another building block in place.  Bucs fans can see some light at the end of the tunnel, but that tunnel is still going to run until probably 2024 at the earliest

Cubs offense has had a huge switch from power/swing and miss to contact. What is your preference, what do you like to see?
Mark P
9:04
My preference is a solid contact approach, since as a fan, that's just more fun to watch than guys constantly swinging for the fences all game.
John
9:06
What does John Means’ tj mean for his future with the Orioles? Does this force the Orioles to extend him since his trade value is lowered?
Mark P
9:09
It means (no pun intended) that all trade talks will likely be halted until the 2023-24 offseason.  If Means returns in 2023 and pitches well in limited action, the O's might still opt to sell as high as they can.  But, remember that Means was only arb-eligible for the first time this winter, so his 2022 salary won't go up much/at all for 2023 or likely 2024.  At that reduced price point, Means becomes a bargain, and the Orioles might just keep him

What do you think of my Marlins so far? Alcantra and Lopez look stellar
Mark P
9:13
Seems like the Marlins are doing about as well as could be expected given that so many of their players are struggling.  Sanchez, Jazz, Lopez, Alcantara, and the bullpen have been doing a lot of the heavy lifting thus far
Gary M
9:15
What is your opinion of Zack Collins playing time going forward?
Mark P
9:15
Collins being a lefty bat makes him a valuable asset on a right-heavy roster, so if he keeps hitting, the Jays will keep finding ways to get him into the lineup even when Jansen returns
Ken
9:16
Because The Night by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen, you mean. Springsteen wrote the music and the chorus, while Smith wrote the rest.
Mark P
9:17
My friend, as a huge Boss fan, I am well aware of who wrote the song.  But if I'd been listening to "Thriller," I wouldn't have described it as "Thriller, by Rod Temperton."
Mets
9:18
conforto  done for the year? wow a year of service time with no money he must be bummed out?
Mark P
9:18
Absolutely.  Seems like nothing has gone right for Conforto since the start of the 2021 season, right at a critical point in his career.
Mr baseball
9:19
How much so you think of players struggling has to do with the shortened spring training
Mark P
9:20
In fairness, many people around baseball predicted this exact situation happening.  Baseball is a sport of routines, and spring training being delayed by a full month was bound to throw everything out of whack

How do you see Teams separating themselves in the AL Central since every team has its positives and negatives and, conceivably, the Division could be a "horserace" all year...
Mark P
9:22
It really is close to call.  When the MLBTR staff was making our picks, I was surprised to see the White Sox get so many of the first-place votes, since you could make a case for at least three of the other teams.

What's your take on the blue jays catching situation with Moreno in the system and 4 catchers on the major league roster
Mark P
9:26
Heineman is ultimately a spare part, and Collins might sort of be in the same boat, his hot start notwithstanding.

If Moreno tears it up in Triple-A and forces the Blue Jays' hand, I could see them utilizing Moreno/Kirk/Jansen and sending Heineman/Collins down to the minors. And, we can't rule out the possibility of a big trade that would send Kirk or Jansen elsewhere.

The Jays want to both win in 2022 but also don't want to do anything that would hamper Moreno's development, especially since developing a young catcher is particularly tricky.  It'll be a fascinating subplot to watch over the year

if the mets were make the playoffs and degrom comes back healthy who would be your choice for the four starters?
Mark P
9:29
Assuming deGrom is close to his usual self and everyone else is healthy, I'd do JDG/Scherzer/Carrasco/Bassitt, with Megill as an overqualified long man

Maddon has said that he views Taylor Ward as his RF (and ward has actually been really good so far). Do you think one of Adell/Marsh gets dealt now for some pitching?
Mark P
9:30
No, because if there's a trade and then Trout (or Ward) get hurt, the Angels are suddenly thin in the outfield.  And while Ward was pretty good last year, I'm also not going nuts over such a small sample size of 2022 plate appearances.
Don
9:32
Do you think the Diamondbacks will have a better record than the Rockies?
Mark P
9:32
Nope
Petco Park
9:33
How many ballparks are better than me?
Mark P
9:34
Having never been to Petco Park, I can't say.  It is definitely on my short list of stadiums to visit one day
Reynaldo
9:34
What’s the main problem with the Red Sox?
Mark P
9:35
I think Boston's problems are being a big overstated.  Again, it's early, and some guys haven't got going yet.  I don't even think pitching depth is really that much of an issue since Sale is coming back eventually and Whitlock looks more than comfortable as a starter going forward
Ryan S.
9:37
How long until we see Nolan Gorman? He's crushing the ball.
Mark P
9:38
He looks to me like another player that could use "a bit more minor league seasoning," but coincidentally he'll be ready just about around the time the Cards gain an extra year of control
Team Kaptain
9:39
Will one of or both of Mahle/Castillo be traded in July and who might be interested/involved?
Mark P
9:41
Like I said earlier, every well-paid veteran will be on the block if the Reds keep struggling like this.  With the amount of trade interest Castillo and Mahle both had, the Reds must already have a good idea of what teams are interested and who is willing to offer what for both pitchers.
