Assuming Kim and Hosmer continue to hit, how does the Padres infield look with Tatis back?
Mark P
8:42
I'd move Tatis into the outfield, or maybe Cronenworth is finally moved into outfield duty.
Jim McCullough
8:43
Is Joe Ryan the real deal ? Is Logan Gilbert ?
Mark P
8:44
The advanced metrics suggest Ryan is the better bet to keep it up, but I'd be pretty happy with either in my rotation.
Prospects
8:44
What's the biggest thing most fans misunderstand about prospect valuation?
Mark P
8:46
Interesting question.  I think it might be putting too much stock into where a prospect might fall in a top-100 list, since there's naturally a lot of variation that goes into those lists even from pundit to pundit.  (Let alone from team to team, as clubs have their own internal lists of their own prospects and minor leaguers on other teams.)  The comparison would be like if you had to keep up a running list of the 100 best players in the majors.....naturally, that list could and would be adjusted on a daily basis.
8:47
Bottom line is, if your team acquires two non-top 100 prospects for a star player at this year's deadline, it isn't the end of the world.

Early impressions on Miranda?
Mark P
8:50
She was hilarious in "Spy," and I liked her original sitcom in Britain way more than the U.S. remake (Call Me Kat).

....oh wait, you probably meant Jose Miranda rather than comedian Miranda Hart.  For Jose, seems like the Twins might've called him up too early, as he wasn't exactly ripping it up in the minors.  I realize Minnesota was in a bit of a roster bind due to injuries and COVID absences, and Miranda is likely going back to Triple-A once some other players get healthy

Cause for concern as a Tigers fan? He’s been frustrating to watch thus far, worried its due to lack of pieces around him.
Mark P
8:52
The Tigers en masse haven't hit whatsoever, to the point that for the second straight year, they may have dug themselves into too deep of an early hole.  Baez himself is traditionally pretty streaky, so the hits will come in bunches sooner or later, but the cold streaks are also tough to watch

Can a player ask to be released so they can play in Korea or Japan? Seems like the Dom Smith and JD Davis aren't going to get serious playing time with the Mets. They might be better off going overseas for a season to reestablish themselves.
Mark P
8:53
Teams are good about accommodating lower-level players when they get offers overseas, but the Mets aren't likely to do that with Smith or Davis.  They still have trade value to other teams, and I'd be surprised if the aggressive Mets weren't still exploring offers
Biggest surprise
8:54
Which team is off to the biggest surprise?  Twins?
Mark P
8:55
I certainly didn't expect the D'Backs to have one of the game's best rotations, they've been a nice surprise thus far.

Being a long time Red Sox fan I cannot understand how they can run out an outfield with NO power. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:58
The idea was that most of the pop would come from Bogaerts/Devers/JDM/Story, and the first three have held up their end of the bargain.  The Sox took a defense-first approach to the outfield, but obviously they didn't expect Hernandez and Verdugo to struggle as badly as they have, or for JBJ to continue his 2021 hitting woes.
Verlander
8:58
How many innings for Verlander this year? Enough for a long playoff run?
Mark P
9:00
I can see the Astros skipping Verlander for a couple of starts down the stretch to keep him fresh, or to give him any rest he needs.  Houston is absolutely expecting to go deep into October, so they'll need Verlander to be as fresh as possible.

In a weird way, Verlander being such a generational pitcher makes him more difficult to handle from an innings-mangement or even a health standpoint.  Do normal standards apply to a guy who is abnormally great?

Pretty rare for a team to get no hit and still win. Pretty cool, eh?
Mark P
9:00
I don't think it's a stretch to call this the highlight of the last five years of Pirates baseball

Who am I looking at trading if we aren’t in contention this summer?
Mark P
9:04
Even moreso than the Cubs, the Nationals have a ton of short-term contracts and thus plenty of trade chips.  Josh Bell might be the hottest trade candidate on the market this summer, Maikel Franco will get some looks if he keeps hitting, Nelson Cruz the same if he turns things around.

Feels like the Nats might be open to anyone besides Soto or the younger cornerstones like Ruiz or Gray
Dave
9:05
Have you heard any rumors that Bryce Harper might have to have TJ?
Mark P
9:06
Any UCL tear is cause for concern, but it seems like he can manage the pain, and he is still crushing it at the plate.  I suspect Harper wouldn't get a TJ surgery unless it's absolutely necessary (and if the Phillies fell out of the race)

Is there any way the Red Sox can trade bogie at the deadline and then sign him to a deal after the season's over?
Mark P
9:07
After that lowball extension offer, I think the ship has sailed on Bogaerts staying in Boston over the long term, in any fashion
San Diego SuperChargers
9:07
Who and how is somebody eligible for an extra Option year?
Mark P
9:08
The league gives some players an extra option year if the players spent an extended amount of time on the injured list
Cookie Monster
9:09
If the Giants were to make a move at the deadline what route do you see them going?
Mark P
9:11
I would guess a solid right-handed bat, since the Giants tilt heavily to the left side at the moment.  That righty bat would likely be used for the outfield, though a multi-positional guy would be the Giants' ideal
Timothy
9:11
Austin Wells, Trey Sweeney and Hayden Wesneski for Juan Soto. Regardless of Aaron Judge signs an extension, who says no?
Mark P
9:11
The Nationals say "that's a nice start, but who are the other five guys you'd be sending us?"

Who is a good second base/utility target for the angels? You always mention they need help up the middle and I think they could use more production at second base (ss is Andre Velazquez’s position because of how many runs he’s saves with his glove and is a big reason I think angels pitchers are more comfortable this year)
Mark P
9:13
Tony Kemp, Kyle Farmer, Enrique Hernandez all come to mind
Chris
9:14
Leafs coverage fair and balanced right about now?
Mark P
9:16
Feels like a lot of "this team seems too good to just tear everything down" material out there, which runs counter to the more common-sense observation that they lose in the playoffs every single year in pretty much the exact same fashion.

Running it back again with this same core group in 2022-23 would be ridiculous, since I have seen literally nothing to indicate they wouldn't just lose in the first round again.
The Hoz
9:17
With the numbers he is putting up and if he keeps it up, you think he will opt out after this year?
Mark P
9:18
After months of struggles and trade rumors, Hosmer suddenly having a career year and opting out would be pretty amusing.  I kind of doubt he'll keep this up, however, and given his up-and-down career production, he might prefer to stick with the $39MM over three years that he's already guaranteed.
Obrey

Is Joey Bart overmatched at this point, or does he need more seasoning? Guy is a No 2 overall pick!!!
