I would imagine the front office already knows which guys they want to try and bring back in 2023, so they'll try to move the names that aren't on that list.  Ownership would seemingly be okay with that, with the understanding that the Sox will be aiming to contend again in 2023.

Or, maybe Bloom gets fired.  It's not like Dombrowski or Cherington got much leeway, and they'd won championships.

What kind of deal do you think Shohei Otani will get for his extension? He's a good two-way player so he's supposed to get paid for his arm as well as his bat. Do you think he would get something like Like 10 year for 450 MM?
Mark P

Ohtani is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2023 season, and he'll be 29 on Opening Day 2024.  Given the special nature of his talent, I can definitely see his reps asking for a ten-year deal, and certainly over $400MM.

Ohtani is a difficult player to gauge since because he's so different than any other superstar player in baseball history.

Mark, I know what's reported is somewhat optimistic about deGrom making it back in a couple months. But do Mets fans have real reason to be seriously concerned about missing Jacob all year?
Mark P
10:02
You have a right to be concerned.  Any time a pitcher missed almost a full year due to injury, there has to be worry that something else will crop up to set him back.  Until deGrom actually gets back throwing and on some kind of a normal rehab schedule, I can't blame Mets fans (or baseball fans in general) for holding their breath

Seen it tonight?

10:03
Pretty wild that the moon disappeared on the same night that the Suns disappeared over in Phoenix

Semien a bust??
Mark P
10:04
As a Jays fan, I can tell you that Semien also really struggled for the first month of 2021 before kicking into high gear
Trades
10:04
which team makes a major trade first?
Mark P
10:05
Probably just because they always seem prepped to make a big deal at any time, the Padres, Rays, or Mariners

Mariners should’ve traded Haniger when they had the chance being out til the all star break really sucks. Is likely they trade him by the deadline or wager he will get back to normal Haniger?
Mark P
10:07
If the M's can't get on track, Haniger will be an interesting trade chip if he can get back to action before the deadline and has enough time to show that he's healthy.

I can't blame Seattle for hanging onto Haniger last season or through the winter, however.  With all these unproven young outfielders, there was certainly logic in keeping a proven veteran there to solidify things.
10:08
Unfortunately, Haniger was sidelined again by another freakish injury
10:09
Man, drop everything and tune into the Cardinals/Giants blowout.....Albert Pujols is coming in to pitch!
Deep thoughts
10:11
Do you think the Jay will get a wild card this year
Mark P
10:11
I think so.  Even with their struggles, they'd still have a wild card if the playoffs started today.  A lot of AL teams have a lot bigger issues than the Jays do

I always wondered why a starting pitcher has to pitch at least 5 full innings to get credit for a win, but a relief pitcher can qualify for a win by just throwing a handful of pitches.
Mark P
10:14
This is why the win is a pretty pointless stat, and shouldn't really be used to gauge the quality of a pitcher

People talk about trading Bogarts, but doesn't he have a no trade clause
Mark P
10:16
He does, but if he is presented with the option of joining a contender, it would seem likely that he'd go (perhaps waiving his clause for a cash bonus)
Albert Pujols
10:16
Pitching will not get me into the HOF, eh?
Mark P
10:16
Ruth and Ohtani breath a sign of relief

Cruz for Ryan go down as the best trade in Twins history when all is said and done?
Mark P
10:18
To my point earlier about top-100 prospects, a lot of Twins weren't pleased when Minnesota got two "no-name" guys from the Rays, but needless to say, they love Ryan now

Recent rumors mention Pads willing to give up Snell or Darvish in order to get some breathing room from the cap. Do you buy that at all? Preller obviously loves Yu from his Rangers days and Snell is just so good when healthy. But the amazing thing about the Pads is they keep you all at MLBTR extremely busy as they are always in on everyone
Mark P
10:20
I can buy a Padres trade rumor about almost anyone, and moving Darvish or Snell would make sense if Hosmer/Myers can't drum up any interest.

With a nod to "you can never have too much pitching," however, San Diego will be hesitant about moving any starter just in case their depth get thinned by injuries.  On paper at the moment, the Padres have a surplus of rotation candidates, but as we saw with SD in 2021, that number can quickly dwindle in a hurry

10:21
Have the Diamondbacks turned a lot of heads in the MLB? Will they eventually go back to last place and sell at the deadline?
Mark P
10:22
It's possible they might have a respectable record and still finish in last place just because the NL West is such a tough division.  Arizona's front office has always kind of hedged their bets about buying or selling whole-heartedly, and I expect more or the same this year if they're still on the outskirts of a wild card race

10:24
Did I actually do it this year in Anaheim? Did I really put together the right mix of one-year, make-good starting pitching contracts, some decent reliever contracts, and a nice pool of middle-infield AAAA players—or is this all going to come crashing down before the All Star Break?
Mark P
10:25
Plenty of teams who looked good in May ended up being also-rans by July.  But on paper, this Angels teams looks pretty solid.  A lot of Angels teams have looked solid the last few years, except then multiple players get hurt
10:26
Time to wrap things up, as we've almost hit the 2.5 hour mark.  An extra-long chat was necessary tonight after missing last weekend.
