Do the Cards go after Mad Bum if nothing else but yo give them a veteran LHP with playoff experience?
Mark P
9:18
I can see the Cards adding a veteran pitcher, but not for someone with Bumgarner's price tag.  Also, the Statcast numbers are very doubtful about MadBum's turnaround being for real

Are the redsox trending towards a rebuild? Based on the lack of guaranteed money and the movability of story as he's playing well, all signs point to a major overhaul in 2023 and beyond in Boston.
Mark P
9:20
Chaim Bloom was brought in to stabilize Boston's boom-or-bust trend over the last decade, and to create a Dodgers-esque cycle of constantly reloading the roster with top prospects and (select) big-money veterans.  I strongly doubt the Sox will crater out into a full rebuild and spend 2-3 years not competing.

Is MLB concerned that generations of baseball fans in certain cities have never seen their teams win or in some cases compete for a championship? It seems that killing interest in the game in so many markets is something MLB would be concerned about.
Mark P
9:23
Every sport has teams who never win, or rarely ever contend for years on end.  With MLB, 28 of 30 teams (sorry Philly and Seattle fans) have at least made the playoffs in the last seven years

Any chance the Jays could engineer a big-time trade for a LH bat this summer, such as swapping a catcher for one of the D-Backs outfielders (Corbin Carroll or, perhaps more realistically, Alek Thomas)? Or will they look to the rental market (Benintendi or Bell)?
Mark P
9:25
A rental is probably more likely, since those players could better help the Jays win in 2022, and guys like Thomas or Carroll are still unproven.

In those specific examples, I doubt Arizona is moving either outfielder, unless the Jays dangled Moreno.  I'm actually not even sure the Jays will need to address their catching situation during the season anyway, if Jansen can't stay healthy.

Alejandro Kirk is for real?
Mark P
9:27
Based on his minor league numbers, this isn't unexpected.  Kirk is thus far meeting the highest of expectations, which is great news for the Jays

With the young arms like Caleb Killian, Matt Swarmer, Keegan Thompson and Adalbert Alzolay. Will my team trade Hendricks, Miley and Smyly before Aug. 2?
Mark P
9:30
Miley and Smyly will have to get healthy first, but in that event, either are obvious trade chips.  Hendricks is a tougher call since he's under contract through at least 2023, and there's also the unfortunate fact that he isn't pitching well --- the Cubs would be selling low on Hendricks right now

Who do you think will win the Tony for best musical?
Mark P
9:34
If Billy Crystal's musical has a 20-minute interlude about Roger Maris, I'll pick that one

in fact the best moments of baseball in the past 20 or so years have involved curse breaking. To get those moments you needed the curses in the first place!

As a fan of teams who haven't won many titles during my sports fandom....yeah, I'd just prefer consistent winning, thanks!

Is it finally time for Avila to go in Detroit? Having traded Adames and Paredes at young and controllable contracts for average established talent seems to be his forte. He has had time, even barring the injuries this year. It’s a what have you done for me lately game. People must produce.
Mark P
9:38
I doubt he gets fired this year or anything, but obviously this season has been a real setback for the Tigers.  Again, it is still early, and we saw last year how Detroit really turned it on after a brutal start.  But the near-total lack of hitting has to be a major concern.

How late does the first pitcher in the 2022 mlb draft go?
Mark P
9:40
This year's draft class is very thin on top-tier pitching prospects, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be all hitters in the top 15 or something.  One particular team could have a particular high opinion on a certain pitcher, or a team could take a pitcher relatively high with the knowledge that the pitcher could sign for a lower signing bonus.
schedule change
9:41
One thing that never was brought up in the CBA negotiations but I feel should’ve was overhauling the schedule format so that all teams play each other more often. Half the leagues stars don’t play in half of the league’s markets. (Example. I think Mike Trout has only played once (July will make twice) in ATLANTA but has been in the league for a decade.)
Mark P
9:42
In fact, this was part of the new CBA, beginning with the 2023 season.  (It was too late to make the changes for 2022 since the schedule had already been arranged.)

Twinkies
9:46
Can the Twins keep this up? Or will they go back to their 2021 ways?
Mark P
9:47
The Twins are hanging in there amidst multiple injuries, and they've benefited from a lackluster division thus far.  However, I still kind of prefer the Guardians' chances of eventually taking the AL Central crown.

Will Corbin Caroll spend next year in the big show?
Mark P
9:49
I wouldn't be totally shocked if he's up before 2022, but if all goes well, Carroll should be in the majors for most or all of 2023
Off season contracts
9:50
Fair to assume largest contract given to a hitter and pitcher this off-season is Judge and Musgrove?
Mark P
9:52
Seems that way, yeah.  Even though Judge is already 30 and outfield isn't as premium a position as shortstop or something, his numbers are getting too ridiculous
Bloom and Gloom
9:52
Will Bloom make the deals necessary to win this year or will he be selling? MAJOR pitching help needed to really be a factor. Hard to believe he’ll trade assets to sacrifice long term.
Mark P
9:54
I'll point out that the Red Sox have been on fire for almost a month now, so they certainly won't be deadline sellers.  In theory, once all their pitchers get healthy, the Sox probably feel any bullpen holes could be filled by surplus starters.  Doesn't mean they won't indeed make a big splash for a new arm in the rotation or bullpen, but if they don't, their reasoning is already in place.

Obligatory "it's still June 12" note, but....yeah, there should be definite concerns.

The Angels have been an absolute train wreck as of late. Even though they have some of the best players in the League (i.e. Trout, Ohtani, etc.), frustrations must be mounting to a breaking point, not to mention the fact they have many of them on lofty contracts. So if the Halos are gonna be sellers this trade deadline, who could be included on the list, and would this include Trout, Ohtani, or anyone else that fits their, if not, similar profile?
Mark P
10:00
If the Angels did go nuclear and shop Trout or Ohtani, it wouldn't be in a midseason trade.  While I still doubt the team will blow things up since they have so much invested in this roster, some pieces certainly stand out as trade chips if they aren't contending.  Free agents like Thor, Lorenzen, maybe Duffy, maybe slightly longer-term assets like Tepera or Loup if they get on track, etc.

Banana Split or Hot Fudge Sundae?
Mark P
10:01
I'd personally opt for a banana split, but there's no wrong answer here.  Suddenly I'm kicking myself for not having any ice cream in the freezer.

Good morning from Cambodia! A month ago the most fun a guy could have with TD-soeculation was to think NYY would buy everything in sight. Now? Could they maybe ... just stand completely pat?
Mark P
10:04
There's definitely some aspect of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" at play, but the Yankees also have some clear needs in the outfield and probably in the bullpen.  Maybe even rotation depth, since counting on the starters to remain healthy all year is a risk.
Rays Trade Deadline
10:04
Can you see the Rays packaging some prospects together to make a big deadline move this year, or do you think last years deal for Nelson Cruz has them more hesitant to go all in?
Mark P
10:05
I don't think that deal will make the Rays less aggressive.  It made sense on paper, but Cruz unfortunately just slumped.
