If Gabriel Moreno becomes a stud, I'd have him play a position other than catcher in order to save the wear and tear on his body (Chapman may not be a Jay in 2 years). Kirk and Jansen can catch. Thoughts?
Mark P
10:07
Moreno has only played a couple of games at third base, so it's a stretch to say that he projects as a long-term replacement at the position.  Now, having him play 3B once or twice a week to keep his bat in the lineup certainly seems feasible

10:10
Garrett Cooper to the Astros?
Mark P
10:11
If the Marlins turned to selling, Cooper would make a ton of sense in Houston, except I don't think he would necessarily be one of the players Miami shops.  Cooper is still controlled through next year, and they'd probably prefer to move Aguilar
The other cup
10:12
Avalanche or Lightning?
Mark P
10:12
Both teams have looked so good in the playoffs, and I'll take Tampa by a hair.

10:12
Mancini has a mutual option for 23 FYI.
Mark P
10:13
Yeah, but mutual options are almost never mutually exercised. Mancini will be a free agent.
Billy Beane
10:13
Frankie Montas for Joey Bart. Giants need pitching and Oakland needs a better catcher.
Mark P
10:14
Unless Murphy is moved somewhere in another trade (which is possible), Bart probably isn't at the top of Oakland's target list
Dodgers blues
10:16
Their good on paper but the game is not played on paper. Enough of their one of the best teams. The team has so many issues. Bellenger can't hit this is a trend. Justin Turner looks 45. Muncey is lost and not looking like it's going to turn around anytime soon. How long ell the Dodgers say he's having surgery on his elbow and out for the year. Walker most likely out for the year Kershaw is also 45 and you know he will go on the IL again. Come clean Mark their not that good.
Mark P
10:17
These are all valid concerns, except you're also leaving out the fact that pretty much everyone else on the team is really good.  The Dodgers are perpetual contenders for a reason, and I have little doubt they'll address their weak spots at the deadline.
JT Marlin
10:18
How are the Marlins looking? Buyer, seller, or too early to tell?
Mark P
10:19
It's been obscured by the Phillies and Braves going on long winning streaks, but Miami has also been playing better over the last couple of weeks.  My cop-out answer is "too early to tell," with a lean towards selling
Astros fan
10:20
I’ve noticed on a lot of these chats that the popular opinion is that the Astros go after another bat, more specifically a first baseman bat. I tend to disagree. I think the Astros have an elite offense that has just been a little slow out of the gate. but based on track record, I’d have to think that the RISP numbers will go up once Bregman, Tucker, Altuve and Gurriel REALLY get going. I’d say they make a Graveman-type move to beef up the bullpen. Maton, Stanek and Abreu just aren’t relievers I trust in the playoffs.
Mark P
10:22
No reason they couldn't land both relief help and another hitter.  You're correct in supposing that Houston has too much talent to keep slumping like this, yet since it's already middle of June, at what point does it go from "slump" to "this guy is having a down year"?

10:24
will any team pay the Pirates price for Bryan Reynolds?
Mark P
10:24
Probably not.  This is another case where a midseason deal seems unlikely, since the Pirates will want as big a market as possible to land their desired asking price.
Flip Wilson
10:25
Chances Judge gets extended before hitting the market?  20%?
Mark P
10:26
With the caveat that Judge could be a unique case, I'd say a lot lower than 20 percent.  The Yankees don't do extensions in general, and if I'm Judge at this point, I would need an absolute monster of an offer to prevent me from testing the open market.

10:26
Do you expect the Tigers to sell at the deadline or stand pat?  If they do sell would E-Rod or Baez be moved?
Mark P
10:27
They aren't moving any of the long-term pieces, since I'm sure the thinking in Detroit's front office right now is that this is just the season from hell, and 2023 is the real breakout year.
Chris
10:28
What do you think happens once Chapman comes back, given how Holmes is pitching? Does Aroldis get the 9th inning again bc he is the Closer (TM) and has a 16m contract?  (I understand this is a good problem to have)
Mark P
10:29
I believe Boone already said that Chapman isn't guaranteed the closer's job, and with Holmes pitching so well, there's no reason for the Yankees to shift gears
FA SS
10:30
You buy Bob Nightengale's take that the Cubs will get one of Bogaerts/Correa/Turner?
Mark P
10:31
The Suzuki signing indicates that the Cubs are trying to make some longer-term effort to win.  But, a major deal for one of the star shortstops is a different case altogether, and there's also the fact that those players might have concerns over just how close the Cubs are to consistent winning
MikeD
10:32
Holmes is more effective if he's deployed into the highest leverage situations. Based on that, Chapman will return to being closer 90% of the time, as long as he returns effective
Mark P
10:32
There's also the fact that the Yankees may just win every game by eight runs, and will never be in a save situation
Jbwalker7
10:33
How long until Carlos Santana is replaced by either 1b prospect in omaha
Mark P
10:34
Santana has, in fairness, been hitting a bit better over the last couple of weeks.  However, those numbers are buoyed by two particularly big games, not exactly consistent performance.  So, I'm not really sure why the Royals haven't just admitted defeat on Santana yet and called up someone else
BF19
10:35
Will the Brewers be able to hold on to Josh Hader when he becomes a free agent in the near future?
Mark P
10:35
Highly unlikely

10:35
Mike Trout mic'd up tonight was great. Seems like a super engaging dude with a sense of humour. Could you pass this along to MLB's marketing department? Thanks, Mark.
Mark P
10:36
I'll tell my cousin, Mark Eting.  If you're wondering why cousins would share a first name and not a last name.....well, it's because that joke wasn't well thought-out.
Trevor
10:37
which is it? Freddy freeman regrets giving his agent total control and losing out on playing for the braves? Or the braves regretting not resigning freeman?
Mark P
10:38
I don't think either is overly heartbroken about how things played out
Ken
10:38
Who are the potential suitors for Sean Murphy?
Mark P
10:41
Pretty much anyone outside of Toronto, since even rebuilding-type teams might be interested in a catcher who is controlled through 2025.  But, by that same logic, that's why I'd say a Murphy trade is unlikely.....the A's must feel their next "cycle" of contention will have started by then.

The A's might also want to take a longer look at Soderstrom and Langeliers, before deciding on dealing Murphy
