Would the Orioles sell if they were only 7 or so games out of the wild card in a few weeks?
Mark P
9:39
Yeah.  They'd have to jump a lot of teams to actually make the playoffs, and everything the O's have done for the last four years have been focused on the big-picture future
Mr KLC

Do you think the Astros pursue resigning Brantley next year or do they continue bringing up kids from the farm like they did with Springer and Correa?
Mark P
9:41
Pedro Leon has been mostly playing outfield this year, so he would seemingly be an heir apparent if Houston did move on from Brantley.  However, while the Astros have been willing to promote from within and immediately give starting roles to prospects, they'll have to be sure Leon is ready

Has Arcia shown enough at second base so the Braves can focus on other areas while waiting for Albies return?
Mark P
9:44
Arcia has looked terrific, though ultimately Atlanta's decision will hinge on just exactly how long Albies will be out.  If he's able to return in mid-August (after his 60-day IL stint is up), the Braves will probably just roll with Arcia as the top 2B choice.  However, if Albies has to miss more time, the team will explore some more depth at the position
Wes Johnson
9:44
Surprised I left mid season?
Mark P
9:45
Wes Johnson = the Twins pitching coach who just took a job with LSU
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/06/twins-pitching-coach-wes-johnso...
And yeah, it seems quite surprising.  Clearly Johnson either wasn't liking the grind of major league ball, or LSU made him an offer he couldnt' refuse, or both

If the struggling Giants we see now are really who they are this year, do they reload in a big way this off-season for 2023? The front office doesn’t like they want to rebuild. But it doesn’t seem like they can really count on their best prospects to be ready that soon.
Mark P
9:49
The Giants have a lot of short-term contracts on the books, so if they do decide to sell and reload for 2023, it'll be a pretty easy pivot.

However, as you noted, the front office wasn't even willing to totally rebuild even in the early days of the Farhan Zaidi tenure.  If the Giants can't get on track, I see a twin buyer-and-seller strategy, with the Giants starting the reload process early

The Brewers/Cards both seem like fringe contenders hoping to get in the playoffs and hoping for magic. Should either trade top prospects for a hope and prayer.
Mark P
9:51
I'm higher on the Cards than you are, and in Milwaukee's case, their contention window may not be this wide open for some time in the future.  As long as you're in the playoffs, you always have a chance....just look at last year, when few would've predicted Atlanta going all the way
Paul

Dodgers should jump early for D Rob and Astros for Contreras! You agree?
Mark P
9:53
The Astros love Martin Maldonado, I doubt they'll make a play for a new everyday catcher.  And Robertson to the Dodgers makes sense, but the Cubs certainly have a high asking price right now.

This year has been awful.  Who are most enticing for other teams?  Grossman?  Soto?  Other?
Mark P
9:55
Fulmer will get a lot of attention, plus maybe Peralta, Jimenez, Chafin.  Detroit's bullpen has been pretty good on the whole, one of the season's few bright spots for them
Sam

Any chance the Royals sign Witt to a long term deal buying out his arbitration years?
Mark P
9:57
It would be a bold move, but it remains to be seen if the Royals would give Witt a Wander Franco-esque contract (since that would certainly be the going rate)
Bernie

Would any names on your All-Star ballot surprise us?
Mark P
9:57
One of these days, Bartolo Colon will make it as a write-in

Are you planning on having a Chat during the MLB draft 3 weeks from today? Who do you think will be the #1 pick?
Mark P
9:59
Draft night is going to be so busy that I'll likely forego the chat, except for maybe some post-draft questions.

With all the young guys in Pittsburgh getting a lot of ABs, do you see the Pirates being both sellers and buyers at the deadline.
Mark P
10:02
Pittsburgh is an interesting seller-AND-buyer candidate.  Like with the O's, they've been in full rebuild mode for so long that we don't yet have any sense of what it would look like to see the Pirates adding talent (though obviously we have Cherington's track record to go on from Boston).

I don't think the Bucs are aiming for 2023 to contend, since they'll first want to actually see these youngsters in action at the MLB level.  Maybe 2022 will be the evaluation year, but this offseason could see the Pirates get a touch more aggressive

10:03
Who do you think untouchable Yankees prospects are? could you see an Ian Happ Trade?
Mark P
10:05
I would be flat-out shocked if Volpe, Peraza, or Dominguez were dealt.  Taking a glance at the top 100, Waldichuk and Wells are probably unlikely to be moved either, but anyone beyond that is feasible.

Keep in mind that New York has a deep farm system, so even though one of their 6-15 types might not be "top 100" prospects, they're still interesting young players

What do the blue jays do with Kikuchi and berries? Both are getting pounded hard
Mark P
10:07
Berrios is just inconsistent, which isn't great, but it also wouldn't be surprising if he immediately turned around and had a quality start next time out.

Kikuchi, however, has looked borderline unplayable over the last month.  The Jays don't have any great immediately fill-in options, or else I suspect they'd already be removing him from the rotation.

Over/Under Judge hitting 60 HR
Mark P
10:08
I'll say under just because it's incredibly hard to hit 60 homers in a season.  But man, Judge is on some kind of a roll.
Will Judge hit 60 or more homers this year?

Yes (33% | 148 votes)

No (67% | 300 votes)

I have a sense Votto may retire at the end of the year. Could you see him hanging it up a year before his contract ends?
Mark P
10:09
As much as Votto is an iconoclastic kind of guy, I find it hard to believe that he'd walk away from $25MM

What do you think the royals will end up doing before the trade deadline?
Mark P
10:10
Moving a lot of veterans.  According to reports, they're already looking ahead to selling, and Benintendi is being shopped

Do you think Verlander is the AL Cy young winner this year?
Mark P
10:13
Not that fWAR is the be-all and end-all of statistics, but Verlander is (surprisingly) only ninth among AL pitchers in fWAR
Not that Verlander isn't still a great candidate, but it's hardly cut and dried at this point
Moti

The marlins look like they have a very promising future with Chizholm, Forte, Aguila, Alcantara etc. Do you see them as buyers or sellers this trade deadline?
