Here's another buy-AND-sell type of team.  Obviously the Marlins are disappointed that they haven't taken that step forward in 2022, but like you sad, there's a lot of good talent on hand to make 2023 seem promising.

Are you surprised that the Rangers have stuck to .500 nearly halfway through the season?
Mark P
10:15
Given how almost everyone else in their division has cratered, not really
Dirk Shenanigans
10:17
If the Angels can't sign Ohtani what's his return look like in a trade
Mark P
10:18
Like everything about Ohtani, it's really hard to gauge.  What is the proper price tag for a guy with that skillset?

The Angels surely aren't moving him at this deadline, but let's say they decide to deal him this winter.  I would suspect an Ohtani trade package would look at lot like what the Dodgers gave up to acquire Mookie Betts

Would a Votto and Castillo for Hosmer and prospects be plausible?
Mark P
10:20
That would be really tricky to work out, particularly since Votto has a full no-trade cause and Hosmer has a 10-team clause (though it isn't known if Cincy is on that list)
In general, the Reds are more likely to maximize their prospect return for Castillo, rather than just use him as part of a salary dump-style of trade

From your insiders re: informants do you have any details ala was Humpty Dumpty pushed by his ex or did he honestly fall?
Mark P
10:22
I'm more of an amateur sleuth, so for a case like that, you'd need a....hard-boiled detective.

10:23
What do you see Brewers doing at trade deadline
Mark P
10:24
Adding some hitting, though the Brewers are in a bit of a tough spot.  They already have a set of regulars, most of whom are hard to move, but also nobody is really hitting all that well.

In general, the outfield seems like the best spot for an upgrade.  Cain's no longer a factor, and McCutchen and Taylor can be relegated to part-time duty

I didn't crack up at that one.

Does Tommy Pham make sense for the Phillies and realistically he shouldn’t cost them too much to acquire…
Mark P
10:28
Pham the Philadelphia Phillie is phun from an alliterative sense, but you'd think the Phillies would phior....er, prioritize a better defensive outfielder
Al Avila
10:29
I’m getting fired, right?
Mark P
10:30
Avila had the full support of Tigers ownership throughout the rebuild, so it would seem a little sudden to see him fired after year one of the "trying" phase (even considering how badly this season has gone).

Is Davis Ross in more hot water than the Cubs are letting on?
Mark P
10:31
He just signed an extension in March, so I'm guessing not

With Flaherty leaving the game early, do/should the Cardinals look at trading for a starting pitcher?
Mark P
10:32
Rotation help seemed to be on the menu for Cards even before today, and if Flaherty is actually hurt, the need becomes greater.  According to early reports, it seems like it might be a "dead arm" situation more than an actual injury, but stay tuned.

Why not wait until the end of the end of the year to name all stars?  Do the game then too.
Mark P
10:34
You're not going to get players (most of whom have been in shutdown mode for weeks) to reconvene for an exhibition game after the season.  If you want an example of how half-hearted such a game would be, I point you towards the NFL Pro Bowl

Jo Adell no longer in the plans? They keep calling up fourth outfielders when guys go down and play them everyday. Seems like if the problem was getting consistent at bats he could have gotten it at the big leagues for stretches
Mark P
10:35
But who then takes a seat to give Adell those at-bats?  Obviously not Trout or DH Ohtani, Ward has been hot, and Marsh also needs regular at-bats.
On a team that didn't have a full-time DH, Adell would likely be on the big league roster and getting regular playing time, but the Angels are in a unique situation

Is Paul Blackburn an All-Star Candidate
Mark P
10:38
In the sense that every team has to have a rep, sure
Not to knock Blackburn since he's having a nice season, but in an objective sense, he isn't one of the very best pitchers in the AL
Reds
10:40
I hope that you answer my question...I've been trying all night. Who do the Reds deal? What positions do they target at the MILB level? Any extension candidates (Drury?)
Mark P
10:43
In general, it should be "best talent available" in terms of minor league acquisitions.  If there ends up being a logjam at a particular position, that's a good problem to have, but those types of issues usually sort themselves out.

My guess is that at least one of Mahle or Castillo are dealt.  Drury is a likelier trade candidate than an extension candiate.  Naquin too will be shopped

10:44
Could the Orioles package Lopez with Mancini or Santander? Why do teams not package more often? Seems better to have quality over quantity
Mark P
10:45
Depending on the situation, packaging players can actually decrease the return in some cases.  The exception would be, say, if a team dealt Scherzer and Trea Turner both at once.
10:46
The O's could look to move multiple players in the same swap, however.  With your examples, Mancini is a rental player, but pairing him with a player with more long-term control (like Santander or Lopez) makes things more enticing for a suitor

Laureano to the Marlins for Max Meyers and Burdick, who says no?
Mark P
10:48
Miami.  They aren't moving Meyer for anything less than premium talent.
