While Moreno has been known to move on from executives quickly, firing Minasian after two seasons would seem a little rash.  Nevin doesn't have as much job security, and might well end up just as an interim hire

Where do you think the buy/sell line is in the standings right now?
Mark P
9:56
Every team has their own view of how well they're doing or how close their are (hello, Rockies!)

In my view, the Orioles, Tigers, Royals, A's, Reds, Cubs, Rockies, and Pirates should all be focused on selling.  The D'Backs are borderline but they're not totally out of the wild card hunt.

Reynolds for Casas, Mayer, and Bello?
Mark P
9:59
That's the kind of offer that would get the Pirates' attention, at least.  Keep in mind, the Bucs passed on Mayer in the draft last year, but that might've had more to with signability and draft pool reasons than the Pirates not thinking he's a good prospect

What do you see the jays doing when Jansen is back to full health? Do they send Moreno down or move one of their C's and which one?
Mark P
10:03
Jansen would seem to be the most expendable one of the bunch.  Kirk has already proven he's a quality MLB hitter and maybe a star, and Moreno is one of the best prospects in the game.

However, I don't think Moreno has quite done enough to immediately seize a regular job.  So it's possible the Jays might send him to Triple-A or maybe just use a three-catcher system (using one at DH as many days as possible), and then explore moving Jansen in the winter

would nootbaar be an attractive piece for the cards to trade for pitching? Is Jordan walker untouchable?
Mark P
10:04
Walker's pretty close to untouchable, yeah.  I don't think the Cards would mind trading Nootbaar, but I don't think he'd bring back any huge return

Benetendi good enough defensively to play a couple of days per week in CF while sharing LF with Yelich the rest of the time?
Mark P
10:06
Maybe on a limited basis?  But Benintendi hasn't played CF since 2019, and there's a reason he was moved to left field in the first place

10:07
Royals said to be making trades. Which Royals are untouchable?
Mark P
10:09
Obviously Witt and the guys still in the "top prospect" glow.  Most of the rotation except for Greinke and maybe Keller.  Dozier and Perez aren't going anywhere.
Cleveland
10:09
I see this is Reynolds trade offer day. Cleveland offers Gavin Williams, Arias, Jones and a lower tier pitching prospect like Curry/Allen. Get it done?
Mark P
10:09
Not even close

hypothetically, is this possible .. Tigers trade Michael Fulmer to the Padres for Eric Hosmer, Wil Myers, and CJ Abrams. Could the Tigers use their payroll flexibility to buy a top-tier prospect?
Mark P
10:11
I think we've received tons of "the Tigers should use their payroll space to buy a prospect" suggestions in this chat over the years, and a lot of them have made sense.  However, the Tigers never made such a move when they were rebuilding, so it would be unusual to see them pivot this way now that they've (ostensibly) turned back towards trying to contend.

Durant to the Raptors yay or nay?
Mark P
10:12
If they can get him without giving up Barnes, I'd be interested.

What do the Astros do with the embarrassment or riches they are soon to have in the starting rotation?
Mark P
10:13
Nothing?  No such thing as too much pitching.  We saw this with the Astros themselves last year, when suddenly their surplus started getting thinned out in a hurry by injuries or guys struggling.

is Jurickson Profar's performance this year an outlier? Do you think Padres wants to sell him high?
Mark P
10:16
I think that would be a canny move, though it would create another hole in the SD outfield.  Plus, AJ Preller likes Profar and believes in him.

What about Jays sending Jansen to the Cardinals? They have received very little production from catcher and Molina won't be back
Mark P
10:18
If Molina actually is done for the year, that'd be an interesting possibility.  Except the Cards see Herrera as their catcher of the future and might not want to immediately block him behind Jansen, and plus there's also the awkwardness of immediately replacing Molina in the midst of his farewell year (though the injury would mitigate things)

Casas, Mayer and Bello for Reynolds?!  Should I just go ahead and throw in Yorke, Mata and Walter and clear the farm system out?
Mark P
10:18
I didn't say the Red Sox would make such an offer, I just noted that it would take something that big to meet the Pirates' huge asking price

If this is the Blue Jays movie that Vlad Jr was referring to, I guess it's going straight to video
Mark P
10:20
"First Place In The Wild Card Standings" is a pretty good movie, in my view.  It's just that it gets overlooked since the Yankees' season is looking like Citizen Kane.

Francisco Alvarez just got called up to AAA. McCann and Nido cannot hit. DH sitch is iffy too. Any word on when Alvarez might get the call. (This has to be the most common Mets question you are getting.)
Mark P
10:23
If Alvarez crushes it in Triple-A over the next 6-8 weeks, I think the Mets pull the trigger on a late-season call-up.
Rays
10:25
do you see the rays as currently constructed as a playoff contented? What should they add to be more competitive?
Mark P
10:26
More hitting, and more bullpen depth.  But really, these problems could be addressed simply by some of their many IL guys returning.  I'm not too concerned about the Rays' chances of making the postseason....they always seem to figure things out

Mauricio and JD for Mancini, does Baltimore do it?
Mark P
10:27
In a second, but the Mets aren't going to move Mauricio for two months of Mancini (yes, I know about the mutual option, but those are never picked up)

Does the ominous news of Soto rejecting a 2nd attempt at a massive extension change my thought process towards a potential deal?
Mark P
10:30
We don't know what the Nationals' new offer was worth, except that it was more than their previous $350MM offer.  So that impacts any real analysis of these contract talks, except my suspicion is that Soto simply wants the biggest contract in baseball history.

Curb had a marathon on tv today..one of the best episodes was Buckners. Do we sign Swanson 5/100? Will that get it done?
Mark P
10:33
Swanson picked a great time for a career year, and I think $100MM might represent the minimum of what he'll score in free agency.  So Atlanta will have to pay more to retain him.

The elephant in the room is this unusual Excel/Freeman situation, but Swanson is on record as saying that he has no plans to change agencies.  So it'll be interesting to see how Excel and the Braves approach another high-profile free agent case.
