It'd probably take more than a few extra crunches in the gym to get Griffey still playing at age 52.

What hurt him was probably drinking Mr. Burns' brain tonic.

Can Julio Rodriguez remain in CF or does he move to a corner?  Would you take his next 5 years or Acuna’s?
Mark P
9:35
It's a sign of how well Julio has played that this is an actual question, considering Acuna has already proven himself as one of the best in the game when healthy.  However, the injury caveat must now apply to Acuna.

Next five years, who'd you take?

Julio Rodriguez (43.4% | 313 votes)

Ronald Acuna (56.6% | 408 votes)

Wow Robinson Cano. He’s like a cat in that he has nine lives! How much, if any, impact will he have on the Braves? What can he possibly offer to a Braves team in the midst of a pennant chase?
Mark P
9:36
He is a no-risk addition for the Braves.  If Cano isn't contributing anything over the next couple of weeks, Atlanta can cut him and simply move on, with basically zero financial cost.

Do you see the Tigers trading Chafin?
Mark P
9:38
Detroit has quietly been playing some better baseball lately, though they're still well under the .500 mark.  I could see the Tigers waiting until the last day or two before the deadline to really decide if they're selling or not.  If they do sell, Chafin is probably gone, even though he's under contract for next year.

Dream offseason…liquidate the farm system for Juan Soto and break the bank for Judge & Ohtani. Could it happen?
Mark P
9:40
Ohtani isn't a free agent until after 2023, so he'd also require a prospect haul to be acquired.

I do think the Giants will be more aggressive with bigger move this offseason.  It seems like their plan to more or less run it back with their platoon-heavy lineup hasn't worked out.  With so much payroll available, the front office might feel it easier to just lock in a big name star or two who can play every day.

How many “Fire Montoyo” comments or questions have you received tonight?
Mark P
9:42
More than a few.

Are Bud Black and his coaches on the hot seat?
Mark P
9:44
Black signed an extension this past spring, and is now under contract through 2023.  Only a one-year extension indicates that the Rockies aren't totally all-in on Black, but keep in mind, the Rockies are also big on loyalty and handshake agreements rather than strict contractual terms.

I would guess Black isn't going anywhere, but if ownership is (inexplicably) disappointed that the Rockies are losing again, he could be the fall guy.

Did the Tigers jump into the Free Agent pool too early with Baez based on where they were in the rebuild?
Mark P
9:46
Hindsight is 20-20, but I thought the Tigers were striking at just the right time.  The team played really well over the last four-plus months of 2021, the young pitchers all seemed on the cusp....the timing seemed right to start spending big.

It can certainly be questioned whether they spent on the right players, but I don't think the Tigers were wrong to start trying to win.
Rays Debate
9:46
More injuries to major contributors. Not sure how many more they can take. Still in wild card race but do they reinforce or sell off a few pieces?
Mark P
9:47
The Rays seem to be constantly going both, so I could see them doing some strategic selling at the deadline while still adding overall.
Natitude
9:48
What kind of prospect return can the Nats get for Josh Bell?
Mark P
9:50
A solid top 100 type, probably in the 80-100 range.  Bell is having a fantastic year and might be basically instant offense for any team that acquires him, but he is a first base-only player and a rental

9:51
Who would you pick as the World Champion right now?
Mark P
9:51
Hard to pick against the Yankees at this point.  There's a real "team of destiny" vibe to a club that suddenly has Jose Trivino, Matt Carpenter, Clay Holmes all playing like superstars

What do Cardinals do?
Mark P
9:55
Keep in mind, the Cardinals have gone on a second-half tear in like six straight years, so maybe nothing?

But big picture, some rotation help is needed, in terms of outside additions.  I think their position player mix is still strong overall, even if their lineup has gone ice cold over the last week.  Getting O'Neill and Bader back eventually will help, though their ETA isn't yet clear.

Could cleveland look to trade for a Joe Mantiply or David Bednar to bolster the pen with all of the prospect capital they have and a roster crunch?
Mark P
9:56
The Pirates have said they're not moving Bednar, and I'd imagine the D'Backs probably feel close to the same about Mantiply (who is controlled through 2026).  It's not the Guardians' style to overpay for any player, let alone a reliever, and it would cost quite a bit to pry either Mantiply or Bednar away

Happ for Hassell and Myers who says no or done deal?
Mark P
9:57
The Cubs say no.
Rhys Hoskins
9:58
Am I getting traded at the deadline or in the off season?Too many DH/1st basemen on the Phils and I could bring back talent they need.
Mark P
9:58
This seems like a pretty feasible scenario.  Hoskins is a free agent after 2023, and the Phillies might want to free up that first base spot to give themselves a little more positional flexibility (maybe get Schwarber in there for some at-bats?)

Gallo is probably coming back to the Rangers… is it a situation of just cash going back to the Yankees or could they pull any type of prospect at all?
Mark P
10:00
Gallo's trade value is pretty negligible right now.  I'm sure the Rangers would be interested if the Yankees made it worth their while with a prospect, but if you're Texas and you want an actual upgrade in the outfield, there are a lot better options than Gallo

Taylor Ward and Thor, Might be the angels to trade chips, what kind of values do they have?
Mark P
10:03
Syndergaard would get some attention as a rental, but the Angels might have to eat a bit of that money remaining.  I don't see the Halos dealing Ward since he's controlled through 2026, and that makes him all the more valuable to a team that has so much money tied up in other players.

OK, Phil Nevin was suspended for ten games.  any idea what that meant in terms of his being able to be on the field pre-game, in the clubhouse during the game, etc.
Mark P
10:05
There's an interesting question....as common as suspensions are, I don't know the actual rules for what a suspended manager can or can't do.  I would assume he's allowed in the building, but he maybe just has to stay in his office during the game (as if he was ejected) and can't be in the dugout.

Or, I've got this all wrong and he can't be in the ballpark at all.

DeGrom is 34 years old and will have spent over 1 year on the IL and will pitch less than 1/2 a season in 2022 (not to mention other recent injuries). Considering that, would he really opt out? Is he really going to get a better deal than the one is currently has?
Mark P
10:06
If he looks like regular Jacob deGrom when he gets back onto the field, absolutely
RIP Paulie Walnuts

I heard that Kris Bryant was removed from a game today with a muscle strain.  Any info on if he's gonna return to the DL?

Apparently he's fine, just some cramping
