Um, excuse me, if you're implying that Anthony Volpe isn't a cross between Honus Wagner and Barry Bonds, I suggest you leave, good sir!

Serious answer....when it comes to prospect valuation, a lot of us are just making projections.  Top-100 lists are speculative, and ever-changing.  How one team sees a specific prospect can be vastly different from another team's valuation, even a prospect that is seemingly a top-10, can't-miss type.

You are the Angels GM!  What do you do?  Consider trading Trout?
Mark P
10:42
Deciding to move Trout is an ownership-level decision, it wouldn't be left up to just Perry Minasian.  Plus, Trout has a no-trade clause, so he isn't going anywhere unless he wants out
10:43
It kind of seems like the Angels could need an overhaul in how they evaluate and develop players, and that's the kind of change that takes years to undertake.

Is Bryce Harper the best player of this generation other than Michael Trout?
Mark P
10:45
Out of curiosity, I surfed over to Fangraphs and looked up their WAR leaders since the start of the 2012 season (Trout's first full year)
Trout, unsurprisingly, leads all players with fWAR, and by a large margin.  Trout has 79 fWAR, but the second-place player might surprise you
10:46
....it's Buster Posey, with 51.9 fWAR.  Goldschmidt is right behind at 50.6, so Posey's reign as silver medalist won't last long
(Harper is eighth, btw)

Oakland needs to move to Vegas fast. Almost no attendance and Oakland doesnt care. If Oakland cared, they would have had a stadium a long time ago.
Mark P
10:48
Oakland fans definitely care about their team.  But, I don't fault them for not wanting to support a team that has seemingly been wanting to leave town for the better part of 25 years

Would the D-Backs take a trade of Dejong for Bumgarner?
Mark P
10:50
DeJong is owed the remainder of a $6MM salary for 2022, and then $11MM more in 2023.  Bumgarner is owed the remainder of $23MM this year, and then $37MM in 2023-24.

So if you're pitching a bad-salary trade, the Cards are taking on way more money.  Given that Bumgarner has been only decent this year, St. Louis would go out and get a better pitcher if it's willing to make that kind of payroll bump (which I also doubt they are)

Tough call for Texas to trade or extend Martin Perez. He's been amazing on a team that needs pitching. You mentioned earlier to sell high on a outlier season. What could the Rangers expect in return?
Mark P
10:54
That's the other aspect of the tough call....how much would another team be willing to give up for a pitcher who doesn't have much of a track record of success?  Clubs aren't going to suddenly regard Perez as a front-of-the-rotation arm, and start flooding the Rangers with big offers.

So by that logic, the Rangers also shouldn't be selling low, if all that's on the table are offers reflecting Perez as a 5th-starter type.

What would the Twins have to give up to get Luis Castillo from CIN?
Mark P
10:56
It would be hilarious if they offered Martin and Woods Richardson to the Reds, but I actually think the Reds wouldn't take it.  Martin isn't having a great year at Double-A, his stock has dipped.

Cat man is on fire you have to be surprised?
Mark P
10:57
Had to google this, since I wasn't aware of Gonsolin's "Cat Man" nickname.
10:58
Gonsolin was always a pitcher who seemed like he'd be good if he ever got a consistent chance to start, though I didn't think he was borderline ace material.
Just curious
10:58
Is it better for rebuilding teams to trade for more established prospects (AAA, AA) or for lower league prospects (A+ou l, A, or lower) with a higher upside, but with longer wait times and higher risk?
Mark P
11:01
Depends on the timeline.  If a team is having a years-long, Pirates/Orioles type of scorched-earth rebuild, they probably are more open to longer-term guys.

If you're a team like the Tigers, for instance, you've had a rough 2022 but certainly think you can get on track in 2023.  So if Detroit does any deadline selling, it'll likely be with an eye towards players who can help them more immediately

We're approaching the two-hour mark, so it's time to shut it down.  Thanks for all the questions, and next weekend's chat is very likely happening on Saturday evening (since the Sunday will be busy with draft stuff).
That's it for tonight's chat, thanks so much to everyone who submitted a question!
