Bichette could certainly be a big part of a Soto deal, but such a move doesn't make much sense for the Jays.  Moving Bichette creates a big hole at shortstop, so Toronto then has to go and get another player.

Also, not that Soto isn't an upgrade, but the Jays already have Gurriel/Hernandez in the corners and Kirk getting most of the DH time.
Guardians

I’m a little offended, everyone just assumes Cleveland won’t be in the Soto sweepstakes. We already had 1 superstar take way less than market value to be a guardian, might as well try for 2! Lol
Mark P
9:34
It really puts Ramirez's extension in perspective as a bargain for Cleveland when you consider that Soto's next deal will probably be four times larger.

106 pitches by Verlander today.   And the best pitcher in the AL won’t be starting or pitching in the All Star game.  😞
Mark P
9:35
In the context of watching all the best players at the ASG, it's a bummer.  In the context of Verlander wanting to conserve himself for the rest of the season and then into October, it makes total sense

Would love to see this World Series.  Which team makes it there first?

Lots of national pundits are predicting that the Astros are interested in trading for starting pitching.  Really?  They have 6 good starting calibre starters (not even including Lance McCullers)!
Mark P
9:38
Keep in mind that the Astros had enough pitching on paper last year too, until guys started getting hurt or fatigued in October, and the Astros had to go with some makeshift rotation work in the playoffs

Am I taking crazy pills or would Christian Walker be a perfect fit?
Mark P
9:40
Walker would be a really nice fit for Houston, indeed
Christian

If you are the Nats, wouldn't it make more sense to trade him (if they do) in the off season when players chosen in this year's draft be part of the deal?  Thank you for the chat.
Mark P
9:42
This is a distinct possibility.  Like I said earlier, it might be hard just from a logistical perspective to arrange a Soto deal in three weeks' time

Toughts on Drew Waters trade.  What does AA have up his sleeve? Trade Comp pick for MLB player for Postseasom run? Use picks pool money to sign someone over slot at 20?
Mark P
9:44
The comp pick can't be traded more than once, so there's no flip strategy here.  I think the deal was simply about the Braves wanting to move on from a prospect they seemed to have fallen out of love with, and the Royals made an intriguing offer with the comp pick
Cleveland
9:45
Amed been heating up lately, who do you see asking about him, and what would the return look like?
Mark P
9:45
Not that the Guardians wouldn't be open to offers, but given their usual MO, they might wait until the offseason to truly explore a Rosario deal
9:46
Cleveland has a ton of middle infield prospects, and they also have Gimenez now breaking out.  So while they have a lot of good replacements for Rosario, they have to be sure about which one is ready to be that chief replacement

What do you think the issue is with Acuña, offensively, right now?  His power numbers seem low for him than what I would think he normally should have.
Mark P
9:49
Hitting way more balls on the ground than usual, so while he's making tons of hard contact, his contact is getting eaten up by fielders.  This could simply be a product of him still getting fully re-acclimated after the torn ACL

Would this be a fair trade? Winn, Thompson, Graceffo, and Julio E. Rodriguez for Montas?
Mark P
9:52
That's not a bad offer, but I suspect a team could beat it in terms of blue-chippers.  Oakland does tend to make deals for multiple prospects, however, so if they think highly of one of the non-top100 guys, they could explore such a trade
Mark P
9:53
What’s more likely to happen? Judge home run record or Alonso RBI record?
Mark P
9:54
I don't think either is happening, but technically probably Judge getting 74 homers is "more likely."  Just because I think the RBI record (190) is one of the more quietly unbreakable records in sports.

With all the money coming off books for Red Sox this winter, how can they justify not having Bogaerts and Devers already signed to long-term contracts.  Dever's price is only increasing. If Bogaerts is not on the team and replaced by Story, it's unconscionable.
Mark P
9:57
It seems like the Sox have already set the table for Bogaerts to leave, and JDM doesn't seem like he'll be re-signed either.

But with this in mind, I agree that it does seem weird that they wouldn't refocus that money towards locking up Devers to a monster deal.  What more does Devers have to do?  Unless the organizational philosophy is now trending towards not giving out any mega-deals, which is silly because the Red Sox have tons of money

Surprised by the Jays Montoyo move?
Mark P
10:00
Yes, but less so once you started to hear rumblings after the fact about discord in the clubhouse.  It's the kind of bold move that perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised by --- the Jays might have always seen Montoyo as an ideal manager for a rebuild but not for a contender, except they started winning ahead of schedule

How silly are the "Scott servais deserves to be fired" people feeling from 2 months ago?
Mark P
10:01
It seems like at least 28 fanbases want the manager fired at any given time, and the other two fanbases are on the fence
Mike elias
10:02
Have my drafts not gotten the credit they deserve? Westburg, Stowers, Gunnar, Mayo
Mark P
10:02
Plenty of potential, sure, but we should probably wait until any of these players even make it to the majors before we start praising Elias

10:03
If I offer Soto and Strassburg's contract as a package for a small return in prospects, would anyone trade with me?
Mark P
10:04
Like I mentioned earlier with Corbin, it remains to be seen if the Nats would want to lessen their Soto return by attaching a bad contract to the mix.  Moving Soto is a pretty rare chance to completely refurbish a farm system, and somewhat passing on that chance just to save payroll would seem like a waste
Rick Hahn
10:06
Mike Rizzo and I have history. Am I bringing Soto to the south side?
Mark P
10:06
Unless the White Sox really went haywire and included, like, Robert and Cease in the deal or something, they don't have nearly the farm depth to get into the Soto bidding
Gord
10:07
First Harper now Soto. Any words of encouragement for Nats fans right now?
Mark P
10:07
You've won a World Series more recently than 27 other teams!
Joshua
10:08
I know Soto is rightfully so the talk of the day, but the Nats still have Josh Bell to trade as well. Do you think they can get back a top 125ish prospect for him. Thanks.
Mark P
10:10
This is probably an out to lunch idea, but i wonder if the Nats could package Bell with Corbin.  They'd basically be punting on value for Bell, but his value is slightly limited anyway since he's a rental player.  I do think the Nats could get a top 85-100 type of prospect for Bell because he's hitting so well, but if the Nats feel a Soto deal can get a bunch of prospects anyway, maybe they then turn to Bell as their vehicle for clearing money off the books
