Anyway, purely speculation on my part, and probably crazy speculation as well!

Avila in trouble in Detroit?   Hinch not the miracle worker they hoped for?
Mark P
10:14
Avila recently got an indirect vote of confidence from Chris Ilitch, who thought the season was a bump in the road of the rebuild process.  It's possible his opinion could change once the year is over, of course, but it doesn't seem like the Tigers are in for a big overhaul

If you’re the Royals do you think about trading Salvy this off-season?
Mark P
10:15
Perez isn't being dealt unless he asks the Royals that he wants out.  KC views him as a face of the franchise.

Now with Soto , if the Yankees deal for him they would have to include volpe and Jasson correct? a player like Soto doesnt become available at his age very often if ever
Mark P
10:20
The Yankees apparently think so highly of Volpe that it has become a running joke in this chat.  But, I could see them offering D.C. a lot of top trade chips apart from Volpe....Dominguez, Peraza, three of the best pitching prospects, etc.
Dodgers
10:21
Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin are all-stars. How does LA turn after thoughts into TOR arms?
Mark P
10:22
The Dodgers' willingness to spend big is a major reason for their success.  But the largest reason for their success is their player development system, and their ability to turn unheralded guys into high-level players
Tim
10:22
But do you think Avila is a good GM?
Mark P
10:24
I said this in last week's chat, but I agreed with most of Detroit's moves this past winter, and I also agreed with their philosophy that this was the time to strike and start contending.

But of course, the proof is in the results.  Thus far the rebuild has led to nothing for the Tigers, and if they never get on track, that's on Avila
Deadline
10:24
The deadline is going to be pretty weak with so many teams in contention of wild card now that 6 in each league make it. Change my mind…
Mark P
10:25
On the contrary.  I think we'll see a lot of movement "because" so many teams are close, and feel they might be one or two moves away.

Will Mets trade their comp pick (for losing Thor) for a trade acquisition?
Mark P
10:27
The qualifying offer comp picks can't be traded.  The only picks that can be dealt are the Competitive Balance Round selections
Jim
10:28
Is there a world where Ohtani gets moved at the deadline? If so, who could you see landing him?
Mark P
10:28
In the same sense that a Soto deal could be hard to arrange in a couple of weeks' time, an Ohtani trade would be even harder because his value is so unique

It’s a seller’s market for CFers and Laureano is one of the short list of players they have that could move the needle on a system that is still ‘meh’. Oakland isn’t really holding him are they?
Mark P
10:30
Can't rule it out, though the A's will try to move the shorter-term players first before moving the longer-term assets like Laureano

Cleveland's top 8 prospects  for 2.5 years of Soto???
Mark P
10:32
Looking it up right now, I didn't realize the Guards had eight guys in Pipeline's current top 100.  That would do it for a Soto trade, sure, but I can't imagine Cleveland (a team that lives and dies by their pipeline of young talent) making such a deal
Jonny
10:34
should the Nats just burn everything to the ground and try to trade controllable more unproven commodities that have high potential such as Josiah Gray and Ruiz and see if they can get even more prospects and just truly aim for 2027 at this point
Mark P
10:35
It's hard to figure, since you'd think that if a team is moving Soto, they'd be moving into a hard rebuild.  But, the front office also might soon have a new owner who wants to make an aggressive push to win, so Rizzo and company might look for MLB-ready young players in a Soto trade package.

Which teams are most popular in the questions today? Soto the most common player?

Oh man, it's Soto Central here today.

Durant to the Wizards, Soto to the Mets in the first cross-sport megatrade?

Is Josh Hader traded at the deadline? And what kind of package could be expected in return?
Mark P
10:40
Hader rumors are always in the background, but Milwaukee hasn't been too open to the idea yet.  For team that relies on its pitching to carry them, the Brewers would have to be very confident that moving Hader would add enough of a (presumed) hitting upgrade to help balance out the team, not throw everything out of whack

Did Kershaw earn the AS game start with last nights near perfect game?
Mark P
10:42
For the symbolism of the game being in L.A., Kershaw would be a great choice to get the start.  Other NL pitchers have been healthier and have better numbers, but Kershaw has been great when he's been healthy.

Not a question, but please post this so people can understand that there are trades that can be made that are out of the norm. A "small market" contending team like the Rays, Guardians, or Brewers for example can trade a bunch of prospects for Soto so that they can compete for the playoffs and a World Series in 2022. Then in the offseason, or the 2023 trade deadline, trade Soto for the majority of what they lost originally. There is so much equity built into Soto the player with 2.5 years of control left. People don't think about this because this is such a huge anomaly.
Mark P
10:44
This is a possibility, except then that smaller-market team is running the risk of Soto getting injured, or having a downturn in performance, etc.
