As a hypothetical, a quick glance at the A's top prospect list doesn't reveal a lot of middle-infield types, and Cleveland has plenty of such players.  So there's a possible match.

The Guardians have seemingly needed a catcher for years, but they're content to sacrifice offense at the position for defense and rotation-handling first and foremost.  Murphy also being a strong fielder, however, could get them to budge on upgrading the position in a significant way.

Franmil Reyes for Josh Bell?
Mark P
9:42
It would take more than just Reyes to swing that deal given how much he's struggled this year, but he would be an interesting piece.

We see deals where “cash considerations” are part of the deal. What kind of cash are they talking about? $10,000, $50,000, $100,000? Thanks!
Mark P

It varies from player to player, and sometimes it's not even five figures.  In some cases, it's a comically small amount....Robinson Cano was apparently swapped for a dollar, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today

Serious question - why can’t the Pirates develop players?
Mark P
9:45
Ben Cherington has only been in charge for less than three years.  The prospects he's brought in haven't had much time to develop (plus, you know, no minor league season in 2020)

I just don't get what Jed Hoyers plan is. Pretend to hang on the fringes of trying to compete while not spending money?  Is that even a strategy?
Mark P
9:47
I think the Cubs are "essentially" rebuilding but don't want the bad PR of outright calling it a rebuild.  The Suzuki deal was an opportunity to lock up a long-term player who can theoretically still help once the Cubs have reloaded with more talent, and the other acquisitions were shorter-term deals (factoring in Stroman's opt-out).

And also, the NL Central is not a strong division.  I'll bet some part of Jed Hoyer thought that with some luck and a down year from one of the Cards/Brewers, the Cubs could sneak into the playoffs.

Just for kicks, greater return - Ohtani or Soto?
Mark P
9:47
Soto.  Younger and he's under control through 2024, while Ohtani is only controlled through 2023

Am I in danger? (Simpsons reference, but also seriously, am I?)
Mark P

It would seem too early to fire another GM, yet the Angels haven't shown much patience before

What would it take to get Christian Walker? Not even a top 30 right? Homer only hitter?
Mark P
9:52
Great defense and walk rate, to go along with the home runs.  Plus, Walker is controlled through 2024.  Arizona could command a nice return for him, even if probably not a top-30 type of prospect.  Top 50-ish, however, wouldn't really be out of the question for a player with two-plus years of control.

The Orioles could afford to buy Soto and make a run for the Wildcard and then maybe flip him next season and get some prospects back
Mark P
9:52
As many have pointed out, the MASN lawsuit has created so much bad blood between the Nats and Orioles that I can't fathom Soto being sent to Baltimore.

It it’s time for me to move on from the veterans of 3 titles. Does this become a rebuild or do I roll the dice on free agents?
Mark P
9:55
(Zaidi = Giants president of baseball ops)

Crawford is under contract through 2023, but it would seem like Longoria and Belt will both be let go. Longoria might retire, and if Belt does return, it'll be for much less than his current salary.

But the Giants have way too much potential to rebuild.  If anything, they could make the big strike for Soto, or be big players in free agency this winter.  Perhaps this could be the year they use all that payroll space.

Gut feeling- does Soto get moved by the deadline or does this carry on into the offseason?
Mark P
9:55
I lean towards him being dealt at the deadline.  Too much smoke at this point, and something will catch fire.

9:56
I always wondered why teams wait until the trade deadline to acquire a player they expect to help win, why not acquire the player say a week or two sooner to possibly win more games sooner
Mark P
9:57
Asking prices are higher the further you are away from the deadline.

Also, as noted earlier, front offices have also been busy with the draft, and (this year) with the uncertainty over the QO and the int'l draft talks.  Obviously various departments within a front office can focus on different things, but a lot of teams prefer to not have too many plates spinning at the same time
9:58
Related: literally every front office would love to have the draft moved off All-Star week for this very reason

Xander Bogarts of the Red Sox has a full no-trade clause.

He does, but he might waive it to play for a contender.

How long do you think Chaim Bloom's leash is?
Boring chat today
9:59
Why don’t you try answering some of the tough questions? Is Bloom a competent Baseball team builder? Please explain if so
Mark P
10:01
Red Sox ownership hasn't shown a ton of patience with their front office bosses over the last decade, so if the team really does bottom out over the next couple of months (which I'm not sure will be the case), it is quite possible you'll hear whispers about Bloom.

Is he a good chief baseball officer?  Well, last year's Red Sox were two wins away from a pennant, and things seemed just peachy.  This year, however, the moves haven't worked out as well, and perhaps too much was made of how close the Sox were to being a true contender

Probability Angels quietly shop Trout this offseason. Does he have an approved team trade list?
Mark P
10:03
Trout has a full no-trade clause.  And like I said earlier, it would take a real change of perspective from the organization to suddenly blow things up and rebuild.

How much does Cashman push into the middle of the table given Judge maybe gone and they haven't won since 09
Mark P
10:05
I suspect the Yankees will be quite aggressive.  Last year's team seemed more like a fringe contender, but Cashman and company still went out and made several upgrades at the deadline.  Doesn't seem like they'll stand pat with a team that is a legitimate World Series challenger

Do I accept an extension and move to DH?
Mark P
10:07
Not unless Boston significantly increases its offer from the $168MM range

What do the Dodgers do with Bellinger next year?
Mark P
10:09
A non-tender can't be ruled out, or maybe some kind of bad-contract swap.

This is definitely a longer shot, but it's at least possible Bellinger is moved at the deadline, as salary offset.  Another team might be interested in what Bellinger can do with a change of scenery.

What's going on with the Marlins? Anyway we can survive the injury bug or is the season doomed?
Mark P
10:11
Seemed like the Marlins were going to be a seller anyway, even before Chisholm was moved to the 60-day and before they lost half their team in yesterday's game
