Let the fun begin!
10:13
(Not that the first hour wasn't fun!)

How can the Cardinals be one of the front runners for Soto based on the depth and strength of their farm, when ever smarty-pants, super cool prospect writer tells me that their farm is middle to below average? Baseball Pro #16, MLB pipeline #16, Fangraphs 15, Law #13, bleacher report #23
Mark P
10:16
The Cards have a proven track record of turning homegrown prospects into productive big leaguers.  The reason their farm systems are so relatively modest in the rankings is because a lot of players (Carlson, Gorman, O'Neill, etc.) have now graduated out of prospect status.  Also, the Cards have been able to score with unheralded minor leaguers like Edman.

Do you see Braves going after someone like Merrifield, Happ or Reynolds?
Mark P
10:18
Definitely, though Reynolds isn't likely to be moved.  But whether it's a bigger deal like a Happ trade or a relatively smaller swap like getting Merrifield, we've seen that the Braves are capable of anything.

In fact, Merrifield fits the 2021 model pretty well...pick up an underachieving veteran at the deadline and see if he blossoms
Brian O’Halloran
10:20
Will I survive the Bloom experiment?
Mark P
10:21
O'Halloran is Boston's GM, while Bloom is the chief baseball officer.  And, O'Halloran has been a fixture with the Sox for almost two decades, and outlasted multiple front office changes already

Are rumors that Rangers not moving Perez true or are they just trying to up the price?
Mark P
10:22
I think there's legit interest in keeping him, since the Rangers feel he has turned a corner
I wonder if a Jon Daniels favorite (the three-year deal in the $30MM range) would be enough to get it done?
Jeff
10:23
As a Jays fan what would a realistic package for Soto be? Gurriel, Moreno, Martinez, Tiedmann is that enough?
Mark P
10:23
The Nats would ask for even more.  And Gurriel is only under contract through 2023, so he might not fit Washington's longer-term plans.

10:24
Does Marte of DBACKS moved if they get a haul back?
Mark P
10:24
Nope.  Arizona signed him to a new extension before the season.
I meant "nope" as in he's not being traded, not "nope, he wouldn't get a haul back in a trade."  Since obviously yeah, he would

With Red Sox collapsing and Devers only controlled through 2023 and turning down initial extensions offers, what are the chances he gets dealt before the deadline?
Mark P
10:26
If Devers is moved, I suspect it might not be until the offseason, to open up a wider range of trade suitors.
Again, I'm not sure Boston will entirely blow things up to the extent of even moving Devers, since that would mean a total punt on 2023 as well

OH NO! We suck again!

Tomorrow you wake up as AJ Preller. Do you trade Snell or Darvish, load up on prospects, then go all in for Soto? What would you realistically do for our title starved city?
Mark P
10:33
I mean, probably my first step is to spend an hour in shock at this bizarre situation.  Then, I'd have to contact "Mark Polishuk" to see if Preller has taken over my body as well, and it's a Freaky Friday scenario.  Then I deal San Diego's best players to the Blue Jays for nothing, and....

But in a pure baseball sense, I think the Padres should try to move Snell for hitting.  If Soto is available at a somewhat reasonable price, I say go for it since that kind of talent is too unique to pass up.  In fact, it's not out of the question that Snell could even be part of a Soto trade package.
Well, it's kinda out of the question.  I just double-checked that Snell is also only under contract through 2023, which again might not fit Washington's plans

Should the Angels try and trade Jo Adell? He may have a lot of potential but he doesn't look like someone who you will ever be comfortable having in the outfield.
Mark P
10:36
It took this long for a Jo Adell question?!

Adell might need an extended, uninterrupted period in the big leagues to see what he can do.  Obviously his inconsistent play and the Angels' semi-position crunch isn't helping in this sense, but the back-and-forth probably also isn't helping

So excited to see who’s moved these next 8 days also why is the deadline 2 hours later then usual? Thanks for doing this hope u get to answer ⚾️
Mark P
10:38
I assume you mean two "days" later than usual.  The league tries to avoid having the trade deadline on a weekend when there are a bunch of afternoon games, so it was moved to August 2 this year

Your view as to the most deserving player not to be elected to Cooperstown?  Other than Rose and the alleged steroid users.
Mark P
10:39
Off the top of my head, Lou Whitaker or Fred McGriff

Is Tapia starting to show his true value to Jays fans now?  I liked Grischuk, but he was more of the same as far as the outfield went.
Or will fans keep on complaining about him not being something he's not, or never was?
Mark P
10:41
After a dreadful first month, Tapia has been quietly solid over his last 162 PA (.834 OPS).  And Grichuk is putting up inferior numbers in Colorado.  That trade looks like a solid win for the Jays.

Tommy John for HOF?

Tommy John is another overdue candidate, with the surgery being a unique x-factor to his case

Given the rangers money situation a top 5 minor league system with glut of several positions a new stadium and ties to boras clients.why not rangers in on soto or trading for front line pitchers to speed up re building process?
Mark P
10:43
Texas landing Soto wouldn't surprise me, even if getting pitching is the bigger need at the moment.  Keep in mind that as aggressive as the Rangers were last winter, they openly said that they weren't trying to build Rome in a day, and immediately get a contender for 2022.

Their first step was just to be better in 2022, and next year is when they'll start expecting/hoping to be contending for the playoffs or more

Should the M’s try to take on Corbin and his contract to help get Soto? They need a SP so they can rest Kirby and Gilbert. Also, taking on that huge contract lets them keep some talent that would go back to the Nats (keep Kirby) without including Corbin. Also, the money they will pay out between the two is probably close to what it would cost if Soto was a FA  now right?
Mark P
10:46
This would make some sense, and Seattle theoretically has the future payroll room to absorb Corbin.  It's possible the M's could maybe send Evan White back as a lottery ticket to the Nats a part of this deal, just to shave a bit of extra dough off the books.

Will the Yanks trade Volpe or Dominguez by August 2
Mark P
10:48
No to Volpe, mayyyybe to Dominguez.  Apparently Dominguez was pulled early from tonight's minor league game, so hmmm on that one
