The M's felt that getting Haniger back was a de facto "deadline addition," so we'll see how that goes.
Jeff
8:47
Do you see the Astros taking a chance on JB Jr? They were linked to him when he was a free agent. And they could use some CF help…
Mark P
8:47
Absolutely.  With Boston eating most of his salary, JBJ makes a ton of sense for a lot of teams as a glove-first fourth outfielder.
AA
8:48
Do the Dodgers non-tender Muncy or Bellinger this offseason?
Mark P
8:48
Muncy is a club option, it wouldn't be a non-tender situation.  But, I do expect LA to decline his option and probably also part ways with Bellinger, even if it's a trade rather than a non-tender
Cambo
8:50
What was the best deadline move nobody is talking about?
Mark P
8:50
Tampa getting Siri and Peralta makes their outfield a lot better.  Your typical Rays moves that sort of fly under the radar but end up working out well.
Hal
8:51
Were the Mets' deadline moves very underrated? Ruf and Vogelbach (platooning) are a huge upgrade at DH, Naquin is better than a 4th OF, and Givens is a viable bullpen arm. On a team that already featured Degrom, Scherzer, Alonso, Lindor and Diaz, and support like McNeil, Marte, Escobar, Nimmo, Bassett, Carrasco, Walker and so on, they really didn't need to add a superstar, did they?
Mark P
8:52
This is a solid take.  I think people expected the Mets to keep up the aggression and swing another huge move, but they didn't have any truly glaring holes to fill.  They're counting on guys returning from the IL to create more depth and catcher is still a question mark, but overall, they're in great shape for October
Yankees
8:53
Can we find a team to take on Hicks contract while holding onto our top 5 prospects?
Mark P
8:54
Hicks is owed $30.5MM through the 2025 season, which counts the buyout of his 2026 club option.  It isn't an enormous amount to move, especially if it's part of a bad-contract swap of some kind, and definitely if a #6-10 type of prospect is attached

Is Philly Bryceless to start 2023 or will he postpone offseason TJ?
Mark P
8:55
It feels like he'll inevitably have to get the surgery, and if the Phillies had fallen apart in the last month, I wonder if he might have gone ahead and got it already.

If Harper now holds off until October, he'll probably be out until late April or early May, given the usual TJ timeline for position players

Why in the world is Donovan Solano not on the White Sox right now?
Mark P
8:58
It's doubly surprising both that Solano wasn't dealt, or that the Sox didn't do much of anything.  Certainly seemed like a good fit on paper
Milwaukee is in trouble
8:58
What are the chances the Brewers try and trade Yelich and his contract this off-season? Seems like no one is safe here anymore.
Mark P
8:59
It's possible they might put out feelers, but what team is going to jump at that trade?  Yelich has looked more like a good regular than a superstar over the last three seasons.
Chris Young
9:00
Would I be smart for pushing for Kumar and Jack to break camp with the big club next season?
Mark P
9:01
(Chris Young = Rangers GM)

Given their inexperience, I don't see any reason for Texas to rush them, even if they had a big Spring Training.  Rocker has yet to pitch as much of an inning of affiliated ball, and Leiter isn't exactly dominating Double-A this year
philsfan
9:02
is the phillies manager job rob thomson or who else could get it
Mark P
9:03
Given how Philly has played since the managerial change, I have to think Thomson is a solid favorite to take the full-time job
Rays Fan
9:04
What chance do you give it that glasnow is in the bullpen for the post season?
Mark P
9:05
I would say better than average, based on today's update.  We don't know for sure until Glasnow starts getting into rehab games, but it certainly seems like he's making strong progress
A’s Fan…but for how much longer?
9:05
Why haven’t the A’s released Lowrie, Andrus, Pinder and Kemp (3 FAs and 1 non tender) to get the younger players more at-bats?
Mark P
9:06
While the A's should be giving their younger guys more playing time, having a team of ALL inexperienced players isn't ideal.  You need some veterans around for mentoring purposes.
Mark
9:07
3/2 count. Bottom of the 9th. Bases loaded. Game 7 of the World Series. You can be the batter that hits the walk off grand slam.  OR you can be the pitcher that strikes him out to maintain the 3 run lead. Either way your immortal after you prevail, would you rather be the hitter or the pitcher?
Mark P
9:08
Everyone can name the two guys who hit World Series-winning walkoff homers.  But there have been a lot of pitchers who got the key out of the clinching games, and many of those names have been kind of forgotten to history
Field of Dreams
9:09
Should Cards fans apologize to Mo for complaining about his deadline moves?  He looks like a genius right now.
Mark P
9:10
As an neutral observer, it seems to me that Mozeliak takes an awful lot of heat from STL fans.  Sure, his track record isn't perfect, and you can definitely point to a few moves he should've made or avoided.  But by the large, the team always wins, they generate lots of good homegrown players, and (i.e. Goldschmidt, Arenado) they aren't afraid to make a blockbuster deal.

Will I be the manager of the Marlins next season or will they find someone else?
Mark P
9:12
I suspect Miami will have a new manager.  Not that the Marlins' poor year is all Mattingly's fault, but it might be time for a change.  If anything, it's still surprising that Mattingly has lasted as their manager for so long, bridging the ownership and front office changes.
Andre Jackson or Ryan Pepiot
9:13
Which one would you have start
Mark P
9:13
Pepiot.  Jackson's Triple-A numbers aren't good.
John
9:14
Is the 3rd wild card spot more appealing in that you get to face the al central winner?
Mark P
9:14
No, because then you're on the road for the entire first round.  If you're the top wild card, you at least get that first series entirely in your own ballpark.
Nathanael Watson
9:15
What are the chances the Nats sign Soto in FA in 2025?
Mark P
9:16
That would be a hilarious turn of events, eh?  And hey, if a new owner takes over and wants to make a big splash right away....Soto pulls a Grover Cleveland and returns to Washington for a second term.
Cubs
9:17
Odds on the following: Contreras extension, Contreras QO or Contreras walking for nothing.
Mark P
9:17
The Cubs not trading Contreras and then letting him walk without offering a QO would make zero sense.  I'll pick the scenario where he is issued the QO, he turns it down, and then signs elsewhere.
9:18
An extension doesn't seem likely at this point.
