Will Avila finally get fired and would Theo Epstein try for a third World Series team
Mark P
9:21
Assuming Epstein's next move is even in baseball (and in team-building and not becoming commissioner or something), it has been suggested that he wants to be part of an ownership group.  Totally speculation on my part, but i wonder if any of the groups or individuals bidding on the Nationals have been in touch with Epstein about getting involved.
As for the Tigers, I don't really see it happening, unless there's a cut of the team in it for him

Is Cardinals starting pitchers Steven Matz and Jack Flaherty done for the year?
Mark P
9:22
Matz is looking unlikely, but Flaherty is set to start a minor league rehab assignment soon
Minnesota call reversal
9:23
As a Twins fan, yes the umpires got it right (runner was out). Replay officials got it wrong (saying Sanchez didn't give the runner a path to the plate).
Mark P
9:23
Really, the Twins have only Scott Cousins to blame
OhtaniTrade
9:24
What kind of package does it take to get Ohtani? Could you give some kind of example?
Mark P
9:26
That's what makes the idea of an Ohtani deal so fascinating.  How do you properly value one season of an elite two-way player?  Sure, it's just one season of arbitration control...but it's kind of also "two" seasons given Ohtani's unique skillset.

I'm sure the Angels would want a "two-season" haul in any trade (if they actually did move him), whereas other teams could be wary.

If the Rangers do spend money this winter, would they be able to go after Nolan Arenado if he opts out of his contract with the Cardinals?
Mark P
9:29
Make no mistake, the Rangers will be spending some more money this winter.  No reason to take half-measures now.  Signing Arenado would be another huge expenditure and pitching is still the greater overall need, but it couldn't be ruled out.

Such a move would also turn the Rangers' in-house infield prospects into some big trade chips, which could then be used to land pitching.

Should I think about selling the Brewers to someone who is actually interested in winning and spending money?
Mark P
9:34
It's hard to say that the Brewers haven't spent (within the realm of market size) or tried to be competitive on a consistent basis.  And there has been speculation about a Josh Hader trade for years, so it isn't a shock that the deal went down.  It's just that the timing seems so off-putting for a team vying for a division title.

Can't pick Yanks, Mets, or Dodgers. Who are your next 3 teams that'd win the World Series?
Mark P
9:35
Houston, Atlanta, St. Louis

Do you think scheduling imbalances are a problem?  Yankees played the majority of their games vs the O’s before they got rolling where as the Blue Jays have 12 games left to vs a team with confidence and a plethora of talented prospects to call up in Aug/Sep.
Mark P
9:37
I am looking forward to the more balanced schedule in 2023.  But in terms of specific timing this year, that's just a quirk, and part of the ebb and flow of the baseball season.  Sometimes you'll catch teams when they're on the downswing, and other times you'll run into a team who can't lose

Does Andrew McCutchen get any HOF consideration? He's at least a Pittsburgh legend
Mark P
9:39
Cutch is definitely better than some guys in the HOF, but he doesn't reach the Cooperstown line in my view.  Still a fantastic player who's had a fantastic career.

Why the Reds get no love from MLBTR for the haul of prospects they got for Castillo, Mahle, Drury, even Naquin trades? along with a great draft a surely top 5 farm.
Mark P
9:40
I think they did quite well on paper.

Does Elly De La Cruz crack the top 10 for prospects at the end of the year?
Mark P
9:43
Hey, speaking of positive future developments fr the Reds...

De La Cruz has drawn raves from scouts, and I wouldn't be shocked by a move that high on the prospect rankings. Baseball America already has him 19th (Pipeline at 46)

Do you think Cleveland will revisit talks in the offseason with Oakland about Murphy and how much does Bo Naylor factor into that scenario? Appreciate it!
Mark P
9:47
Cleveland loves defense behind the plate, and while Naylor looks like a decent glove in his own right, Murphy is already a top defensive player.  Keep in mind that the Guardians also have a 40-man roster crunch, particularly with a lot of middle infield prospects.

I'm sure they would love to address two problems at once by unloading some of those 2B/SS shortstop types for Murphy, but it's a question of finding the right mix that Oakland wants.

Can you name a team that’s doing bad this year do you expect to be good next year?
Mark P

Texas or San Francisco
Trea Turner

Does Trea get more than $190-220 million over 6-7 years?
Mark P

Way more

Do the red sox keep bogarts and/or devers?
Mark P
9:50
My guess is that Bogaerts is definitely gone.  Devers I'm leaning towards also being gone, unless the Sox get more serious with their extension talks.

Great chat Mark, but I hope you don’t end w/o acknowledging what deGrom did today prior to his last pitch. (Perfect through 5 2/3, 12K.) I’m a Boston fan yet I will tune in to Xm radio or MLB.tv whenever he pitches. Is there any other player not on your team that you or anyone in this chat can say that about?
Mark P
9:53
I try to seek out Ohtani's starts, but yeah, deGrom is also definitely on that short list of must-see pitchers.  Today's start was super dominant.

Time to call it a night.  We'll be back next weekend with just one chat, so stay tuned.  Thanks for all the questions!
