And through it all, the Sox are still not far back in the AL Central or wild card races.  They're just one or two hot weeks from getting into the driver's seat, really.  

My suspicion is that if they do miss the playoffs, La Russa will be moved to an advisory position and a new manager will be installed.

It is extremely hard to void contracts, which is by design.  Any attempt from the Padres to do this would definitely draw the ire of the MLBPA.
