Trade Tatis in the off-season?
Mark P
9:38
Tatis has a full no-trade clause, so it could be a moot point anyway.  But if you're another team, why on earth would you want to acquire Tatis at this moment?

No mention of Keith Hernandez?? Nice chat, pretty boy.
Mark P
9:40
Our chat...was RUINED

Keith Hernandez probably appreciated my suggestion about improving the Phillies defense, at least
Patrick Sandoval
9:42
Why do I not get more National attention for the season I’m having? I know my record isn’t great, but it’s not do you effort.
Mark P
9:42
Sandoval is one of the few bright spots of the Angels season, no doubt
Mariners
9:44
I thought I'd write Mariners to see what it looks like in a Chat. Oh--Are they a threat to go deep in playoffs?
Mark P
9:44
Sure, they're on a real roll right now.  If they can just get into the bracket, stranger things have happened than the M's perhaps making a run in October.

While Toronto took 3 of 4 in the Bronx, do you think their inconsistent play of late will haunt them down the stretch. Do they make the postseason?
Mark P
9:47
I tend to still think so, but as a Jays fan, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't very nervous about the stretch run.  The Jays don't seem to have much middle ground between looking like world-beaters or looking completely outclassed, and their record against winning teams is very troubling.  They have a stretch of games coming up against weaker competition (Cubs, Angels, Pirates, Rangers) that they absolutely have to take full advantage of, since the last few weeks of the season are all against the AL East

What do the Reds do this offseason?
Mark P
9:50
Pick up a few veterans on one-year deals, then hope to flip them at the deadline for more young players.  Get a full season of India and Stephenson, Votto and Moose will both be off the books after 2023, and then hope to reload for 2024.
9:51
As ugly as the last couple of seasons have been for Cincy fans, 2023 might not be much better, but it's now easier to see the overall direction.

Do Tigers Need a starting Pitcher or a power hitter more to compete ?
Mark P
9:53
Hitting is the much bigger problem, since the starting pitching at least *might* have been okay if literally everyone didn't get hurt
Thiago
9:55
Will the Marlins trade for a CF this offseason?
Mark P
9:57
Seems like it, since none of Sanchez, De La Cruz, or Bleday have done much to seize the job.  Now, it's also not like Miami is giving up on Sanchez or Bleday, so it could be that they look for a CF-capable player who can handle most of the playing time but could also move to other positions

With the inning limit reachable, do I turn it down, take the buyout become a free-agent and try for a 2/3 yr contract?
Mark P
10:00
Carrasco is hurt, so that's going to eliminate any chance of his vesting option.  At $14MM, I can see the Mets simply picking it up if they think any of deGrom/Bassitt/Walker are apt to leave, or if the Mets don't have much internal interest in retaining any of them
George Brett’s Bat
10:01
Goldschmidt is finally having his MVP season. He’s gotta be a hall of famer when it’s all said and done, right?
Mark P
10:01
Goldschmidt definitely seems like he'll have a great HOF case
Ken
10:01
If you were the A's, do you keep A.J. Puk in the bullpen next year, maybe even as closer, or do you try one more time to see if he can make it as a starting pitcher?
Mark P
10:02
With all of Puk's injuries, maybe just keeping him in a relief role is a wise move.  Why tempt fate by trying him as a starter again and risking another injury?

Plus, Puk has looked quite good as a reliever
Ryan
10:05
Rodon to Baltimore.  Give him a dump truck of money
Mark P
10:06
One possibility for the Orioles is that they'll make one big "hey, we're on the map again" type of signing that some teams make to signal the official end of their rebuild.  The Nats signing Jayson Werth years ago is the chief example of this, and other more recent examples include the Jays signing Ryu, or the Tigers signing Baez and E-Rod.
10:07
To that end, a Rodon would be an interesting fit, and he'll command a nice contract but not something in the top-top tier of the FA market.

The other factor is that the Orioles have traditionally shied away from long-term deals for pitchers, but that may have changed now that Peter Angelos is no longer in charge of the team

Do post season at bats or innings pitch count towards rookie status.
Mark P
10:07
Nope
Flat Brew Crew
10:08
Did the deadline deals yank the heart out of the Brewers? They look terrible.
Mark P
10:11
It's hard to ignore how the Brewers' slump has pretty much directly coincided with the trade deadline.  There's certainly something to be said for the mental aspect of the game, and it definitely looks like the players haven't gotten over losing Hader (as much as that move might've made sense on paper)
Rangers13
10:11
Provided he would be interested can you see Rangers offer Kershaw  a Nolan Ryan type contract covering 2-3 playing years and 7-8 personal service years?
Mark P
10:12
I tend to think that Kershaw will remain a Dodger for the rest of his career.
Molina oddness
10:13
What's with Molina leaving in the middle of a pennant race to run a business, plus spending so much time away from the Cards, plus looking like he's 300 pounds--in his Farewell Season? Weird way to run a team and a clubhouse.
Mark P
10:14
I guess the logic was that Molina would only be playing in one of the two games anyway, and since the Cardinals won both, it's a moot point.

But it is pretty unusual, to say the least.  It's like if I asked Tim if I could duck out of a MLBTR chat for 30 minutes to take care of my lemonade stand.  Some might wonder who would buy lemonade this late on a Sunday night, but that's just the gap in the market that my business is looking to fill!

Are the Braves the best team in baseball?
Mark P
10:15
If not, they're very close.  This looks like the best chance at a repeat title in a long time.
Ryan
10:16
You going to watch house of the dragon?
Mark P
10:16
Probably not.  I'm a little (pun intended) burned out on Game Of Thrones stuff.

Do Giants re-sign Rodon  and go for outstanding offensive/defensive players also?
Mark P
10:18
Retaining Rodon certainly seems like a possibility, and the sky is really the limit for a Giants team that will have a ton of payroll space and lots of needs to address.  This could be the time for the front office to make that kind of splashy move they've generally avoided thus far, especially considering the underwhelming nature of the Giants' 2022 season
