Carlos Rodón has the most fWAR in baseball — why isn’t he getting much cy-young consideration?
Giants
9:35
Will Farhan regret not trading Rodon?
Mark P
9:37
NL Cy Young race is tight, and Rodon should absolutely get a lot of votes (maybe the most).  If everyone is close in fWAR, narrative might again be a factor --- Nola or Fried pitching for contenders could outweight Alcantara or Rodon, for instance.

The Giants will be getting a pick back via the qualifying offer if Rodon does leave in free agency, so whatever they were offered before the deadline, the Giants deemed it less valuable than that potential pick.  Also, let's not rule out the possibility of the Giants wanting to retain Rodon themselves
Moreno
9:39
Am I the reason for my own failure? Or is it just fate (no one can miss on that many deals, Rendon, etc.- law of averages?)?
Mark P
9:40
By all accounts, Moreno is very involved with front office decisions, which has seemingly proven to be very detrimental to the Angels over the years.  If an owner keeps telling a GM to make particular moves, the GM's hands are tied even if he thinks/knows these moves won't work out.

Thoughts on the Mets retiring Willie Mays' #24 today?
Mark P
9:41
Given how much Mays meant to New York sports, and how much he means to baseball as a whole, I thought it was a cool move

Favorite Ichiro factoid/stat/nugget as he goes into the Mariners Hall of Fame about 30 minutes from now?

If you have an Athletic subscription, I highly recommend this awesome collection of Ichiro anecdotes.  (Coincidentally, Corey Brock just re-posted the link moments ago)

Which seller won the trade deadline? I sure think we did!
Mark P
9:45
I mean, we won't really know how well the Reds or other sellers did for maybe a few years yet.  But in terms of immediate results....the Orioles dealt Mancini and Lopez, then just kept on winning.

Even if they ever approve the waterfront stadium deal, is Oakland really a viable option to keep the A's? It seems like MLB could use the excitement a team in Vegas, Nashville, etc.
Mark P
9:47
The Rays could end up switching cities, and I wouldn't rule out the Angels possibly moving, either.  Leaving the SoCal market would be a big decision, but a new owner might prefer their own city, rather than playing second fiddle to the Dodgers.

The Angels' stadium lease is up in 2029, with a club option to extend until 2038.  Exploring a new deal with the city of Anaheim will be tenuous given all the controversy of the last deal

Could you see Miggy surprisingly retiring after this season despite his comments? He just doesn’t look right at the plate after having a problem with his knees.
Mark P
9:49
It's possible.  He wouldn't walk away from the $40MM still owed to him, but maybe an arrangement could be made for him to still get that money and not play.

Is there any chance the angels angels are sold by the early stages of FA?
Mark P
9:49
Nope.  A multi-billion dollar deal isn't going to be arranged and finalized that quickly.
Dodgers
9:52
Do you think LA will make a run at deGrom? Friedman loved high AAV low year deals
Mark P
9:52
The Dodgers will absolutely check in on deGrom, as I'd imagine every contender will.  And, LA has the deep pockets to possibly make a deal happen.
Orioles

Do I make the playoffs?
Mark P
9:54
It's time for Mark's hot take of the week, sponsored by nobody.

The Orioles will make the playoffs.  It'll be close, and it might come down to an actual tiebreaker, but if that's the case, the O's have had the Jays' number head-to-head thus far this season.
9:55
As a Jays fan, maybe you should ask me this question again when Toronto hasn't been shut out in consecutive games.  :)

I need to make a decision in the next 20 minutes…Should I go see Top Gun:Maverick?!

Yep, worth seeing on a big screen.  The aerial scenes are exceptionally well done.

Francona for MOTY …… who else could it be????
Mark P

Francona has done his usual excellent job, but Brandon Hyde surely has that award on lock

Cubs ownership feels that they received no return on numerous FA'S they signed in the past. Do you think they look at Bryant Baez possibly Schwarber and say they were right. And stay away from long term big contract FA'S?
Mark P
9:59
I think Cubs fans are less critical of the team not keeping those players and more critical of the team not doing more to build around those guys while they were in Chicago and still playing well

Should the Dodgers bench Bellinger? Thompson, Gallo, and Chris Taylor are all playing much better than Cody.
Mark P
10:00
Bellinger's glove is keeping him earning some playing time, but I can't imagine the Dodgers giving him a big role in the postseason.
10:01
Taylor has also been kind of quietly really slumping over the last few months.

With minimal(by SF standards) on the books for 2023 and beyond, any chance they land Turner at SS for 10/300, re-sign Rodon at a 5/150, and then trade for a bad contract to pick up an undervalued asset? is something like Rendon and half his contract (roughly 75m) with Ohtani a possible trade option?
Mark P
10:04
I do think it's time for SF to start flexing their financial muscle, with the caveat that Farhan Zaidi has discussed how the team would prefer to stay away from ultra-long deals.  Now, whether they'd make an exception for a player like Turner is yet to be seen.

The Ohtani/Rendon scenario seems pretty unlikely.  We probably can't rule it out given the uncharted territory of what the Angels sale might do to baseball operations, but I have a hard time seeing Moreno trade Ohtani in one of his final acts as owner

Jo Addell for Casey Mize. Who says no?

I am making the safe guess that the NL East runner-up will get one of the WC spots, and the less-safe but still reasonable assumption that the Phillies will get another.  And, I'm also assuming that the Giants don't catch fire in September and steal that final WC spot
