My guess is still that Arenado and the Cardinals work out an extension, so Arenado's opt-out becomes moot

Do you think Cleveland will explore upgrades for Myles Straw this offseason.  His defense is elite, but he’s really struggled with the bat.
Mark P
10:13
Maybe, or at least a platoon partner.  But, keep in mind that strong defense is a big cornerstone of the Guardians' success, and a reason why they've been playing well despite a lack of lineup depth.  I can see the Guardians considering Straw's glove such an asset that they're ok keeping him in center field, but they'll look to build up their offense at other positions
7 back with 17 to go
10:14
So you don't give the Phils any shot at winning the division?
Mark P
10:14
As well as the Phillies have been playing, I don't see BOTH the Mets and Braves falling apart

10:15
At what approximate date do you see Peraza and/or Volpe getting called up this year, if at all?
Mark P
10:16
Volpe not at all, Peraza maybe a week into September?  Peraza's situation could be also based on how the Scranton Michael Scotts are doing into the playoff

Seeing where the big league club and its farm system stand, how long (barring a new owner adding $120 million to the payroll) before the Angels realistically contend again?  And percentage chance of Phil Nevin returning in 2023?
Mark P
10:19
I'd be surprised to see Nevin back, but then again, he might also be kept as a placeholder with an ownership change looming.
10:20
In terms of contention, a lot of work needs to be done.  Even with Ohtani and Trout on board, this team is a long way behind the Astros and Mariners, and even behind Texas within the AL West alone.  It's possible a new owner who makes a conventional GM hire says "give us a year to reload and get our people in place, then watch out."
I meant to say "at least one year" to reload.

everyone always asks whats your favorite baseball movie or video game. but in your opinion whats your least favorite baseball movie? mine would be trouble with the curve
Mark P
10:22
"Trouble With The Curve" is a worthy choice, but Matt LeBlanc's "Ed" might be my pick.
10:23
Actually wait, what am I talking about.  Ed is bad but it's just a goofy kids' movie.  TWTC is trying to make a serious point and is still actively bad.

You think the Guardians can win the World Series?
Mark P
10:25
They're not my favorite to come out of the AL, but in a short series, anything can happen.

Looking into your crystal ball, how many more years is Houston playing at a high level? When does this team go into a rebuild? 3-4 years? Maybe 5.?
Mark P
10:29
The Astros have been great at developing from within (especially with pitchers), and reloading enough to withstand losing good players.  I think a five-year window is realistic for this club, since Altuve isn't slowing down, Bregman seems to gotten himself fully back on track, etc.

10:30
Could you see the Tigers bringing back some former Tigers, such as Justin Verlander or JD Martinez this offseason?
Mark P
10:31
Nostalgia notwithstanding, I think both would prefer to sign with teams that will be more clear-cut contenders in 2023.  Martinez will have fewer options than Verlander, true, but with JDM also having a decline year in the power department, he might not be a fix for the Tigers' woes either

10:32
Do Bloom and Cora have long leashes? With the power outage everybody on the socks has had this year, do you expect that to affect Bogart's pay enough to sign another deal in Boston?
Mark P
10:34
I still expect Bogaerts to opt out, but it is a fair question to ask how Boston's ownership feels about his letdown of a season.  Bloom might have less of a leash than Cora, quite possibly, but it all depends on how many growing pains ownership is willing to accept as Bloom remodels the organization

The Reds were said to have a great deadline this year by almost every media outlet but I'm stumped.  They traded for at least four SS and, if I'm not mistaken, three of their four best prospects are shortstops.  What gives?
Mark P
10:37
Shortstop is a premium position, and if a guy is good enough to handle SS, he is very likely good enough to also play third base, or second base, or maybe the outfield.  If the Reds end up having a positional logjam, that's a great "problem" to have

Joe Ryan have a shot at roy?
Mark P

In a normal year, sure, but not in a season with guys like J-Rod and Adley

10:39
It’s only been a current 6 year drought, but how likely is it the Pirates break the expanded postseason drought record is f 30 years by Montreal/Washington?
Mark P
10:39
Time for another Mark hot take.....the Pirates will make the postseason at least once in the next 23 years
Cubs
10:41
Could Happ and Stroman be traded in the winter meetings?
Mark P
10:42
Quite possible, sure.  Happ in particular still has a lot of value even with just one year left of control, though it's puzzling that the Cubs didn't move him at the last deadline
10:43
Stroman is a bit of a trickier sell, since is owed $25MM in each of the next two seasons and he can opt out after 2023.  He's been good but not great this year, not to the point that I can see a team valuing him for $25MM.

10:44
The Marlins offense... never mind
Mark P
10:45
hey, they just beat the Dodgers today.  Optimism!

10:46
So I have looked up the stats of J-Rod, Adley and Witt Jr, I dont know why everyone is just giving ROY to J-Rod, Witt has 1 less RBI, 2 less HR and 1 more hit and other than walks Witt is blowing away Adley in all stats.
Mark P
10:47
Witt is having a strong year in his own right, but he's also distinctly behind the other two guys in overall value.  And yeah, Witt's counting stats are better than Rutschman's, but Adley has had 160 fewer PA
Chris
10:48
Do the braves pick up Charlie Morton’s option? He’s been good for stretches but is he still worth 20MM with how up and down he has been?
Mark P
10:48
The Braves decline the option, but if Morton wants to keep playing, I suspect he re-signs with Atlanta at a lower price
