Would the Phils be better off keeping Segura, leaving Stott at short, and using the money everyone thinks they'll spend on a SS instead on a top line starter?
Mark P
8:43
This is also a very possible path, though that would leave the Phillies maybe looking for a shortstop in the 2023-24 offseason if they determine Stott is ultimately a second baseman.  If Dave Dombrowski has a particular interest in a known quantity in Bogaerts, he might prefer to make that move now.
Cleveland
8:44
who does Cleveland try to lock up long term this off-season there are many potential names here what are your thoughts ?
Mark P
8:45
McKenzie, Gimenez, and Kwan are at the top of the list, though since the first two aren't even arb-eligible until 2024, the Guardians might opt to continue enjoying the savings.
8:46
But then again, given how proactive Cleveland is about locking up young talent early, they might choose to explore extensions sooner rather than later, since the price tag will just keep going up if these players keep performing

Why do star players seem to play a year to long.  Willie Mays did and Yadi showed up in spring training over-weight.  It can't be for the money?
Mark P
8:47
If you still loved playing baseball, felt you had more to contribute on the field, and at least one team was willing to pay you a salary, wouldn't you keep playing?

Who back in mid-March had Eugenio Suarez having a far superior year to Jesse Winker in 2022?
Mark P
8:49
Certainly not the guy who wrote this post back in December!  Man, what a numbskull this guy was, why did MLBTR ever hire him?

With the recent appetite for rule changes, and chance we see how Wins are scored for pitchers?
Mark P
8:52
It's possible, but I think pretty much everyone already agrees that the win is a flawed stat.  It doesn't really need alteration as much as it could maybe just be ignored as a way of determining a pitcher's value.
Guardians?
8:52
Do they somehow hang on?
Mark P
8:54
Huge series this weekend over the Twins, which gave the Guardians more breathing room.  Cleveland has four games left against Chicago this season, and those may prove to be pivotal.  Key stat: the Guardians are 9-6 against the White Sox so far, so just one more victory clinches the season series for Cleveland

When a player under contract has to have surgery, do they have any say in the matter?  And who actually pays for the surgery?
Mark P
8:55
The team covers the surgery, and a player always has the final word on whether to undergo a procedure or not.  You'll often see players look for second options or pursue non-surgical rehabs rather than (or before) getting a surgery

hoskins' power and patience is not easily replaceable for philadelphia.
Mark P
8:59
That's the tricky part of it for the Phillies, since it's not like Hoskins (or Segura) are playing badly.  An argument can be made that the Phils already have their 2023 lineup in place, with Harper getting healthy and getting back into the RF mix, and thus allowing for more DH days for Castellanos and Schwarber.
Colorado rockies
8:59
What do we need to do to compete next year?
Mark P
9:00
Short of scoring big on five or six offseason acquisitions, it's hard to see the Rockies suddenly emerging as a contender by 2023.

Bigger picture, what the team probably needs to do to be competitive is have a total front office overhaul, and hire some new voices from outside the organization.

Obviously, the Rangers need starting pitching, but what positions do they target to improve their offense? Semien and Seager lock down middle infield. Lowe has been solid at first offensively. Garcia should drive in 100 runs. Then there are some decisions to make as to whether or not the young players like Heim, Tavarez, Jung, Thompson, Duran, Huff, Smith, etc. can come through? Ownership has made strong statements that they need to compete in 2023, so can CY continue to let some of these position players develop?
Mark P
9:05
My guess is that the Rangers use a young semi-platoon at 3B and C, stick with Taveras in CF, and look for an established corner outfielder.  Maybe the cleverest move would be to find a multi-position type that could be bounced around the diamond, if for instance Jung and company struggle at third base.

Texas can probably already look into shopping middle infield prospects, knowing that Seager and Semien have those positions locked up for the foreseeable future.  But in general, the Rangers can be open to offers of moving their youngsters for established talent, and if there's one particular prospect the Rangers are no longer as high on, they have the depth to unload that player for a proven vet

Can Gunnar Henderson have a Julio like rookie season in 2023?
Mark P
9:08
No, because Julio-like rookie seasons are very rare.  Henderson can produce half of what Rodriguez did and still have a fine year

With the idea of MLB playing a more balanced scheduled do you see reorganization, of the Divisions and Leagues say putting the 2 NY teams in the same division or that idea or expansion first then reorganization
Mark P
9:09
Assuming MLB stays with a two-league traditional setup, they'll always keep the two New York teams (and two Chicago teams, and two Los Angeles-area teams, and two Bay Area teams, etc.) in different leagues

Thoughts on the Orioles signing Kolton Wong in the offseason? He’s also a left handed hitting second baseman like Odor, but better. And would be a nice veteran leader for them, without costing too much.
Mark P
9:13
The O's have enough young infielders on the way up that they might stick with their in-house guys, rather than bringing in a new veteran

Mark! Which World Series matchup is the most exciting to you? Personally, I would love to see the rotations of Mets vs Astros, assuming all of Verlander, McCullers, Scherzer, and deGrom are healthy.
Mark P

As a Toronto fan, my most exciting World Series matchup is Blue Jays vs. anyone

Let’s just get an answer. Jo Adell getting traded or no?
Mark P
9:16
By this point, maybe I should buy the Angels just to put to an end to the trade rumors once and for all.

(And probably no, he's not getting traded.  Once the Angels dealt Marsh, it made it far more likely that they continue to roll with Adell.)

Who is our 4th starter in the playoffs? Gausman,  Manoah,  Barrios, question mark?
Mark P
9:17
It'll be Stripling, no doubt about it

Are the limited throw overs allowed by starters coupled with larger bases being underestimated as the biggest change coming next year?  We're going to have someone steal 100+ bases again. Yes?
Mark P
9:18
You're going to see far more aggressive base-running next year, and teams will need to make some serious defensive adjustments to compensate
And personally, I like it!  Stolen bases are exciting
