It's definitely an actual injury, but the Braves shut him down early in the hopes that they caught the oblique issue before it became a severe strain.  We'll know more in a few days time after Strider has had a chance to rest and get more tests done.

All the most reason for the Braves to win the NL East, since a first-round bye gives more time for Strider to rest up

The Jays have to trade Moreno right? Jansen and Kirk have a good thing going and Moreno will have good trade value this winter. Thanks!
Mark P
8:25
Jansen still seems like the likeliest trade candidate.  Moreno is one of the very top prospects in all of baseball, and prospects of that ilk aren't traded unless it's for a massive return.

What position will Oswaldo Cabrera play primarily for the Yankees next year? Infield seems pretty full unless deals are made and if Judge resigns, that would seem to leave LF for him
Mark P
8:27
IKF could be let go, opening up shortstop for Cabrera and/or Peraza.
Jake McCarthy
8:28
Why don’t you like me?
Mark P
8:28
Oops!  My bad in leaving McCarthy off that list of interesting D'Backs position players!

With Zach Neto tearing it up at AA and looking like the SS of the future, do you think the Angels are more likely to seek a 1 year stop gap at SS than be big spenders at the position? Miguel Rojas a possible trade target?
Mark P
8:29
If the Angels go the stopgap route, they might just keep Velazquez to keep his premium glove in the infield

Coolest rock concert you've ever attended?

Bruce Springsteen's show at the Rogers Centre in 2012

Am I heading out of KC after the season? Will Greinke head with me?
Mark P
8:31
My guess is that the Royals will make a change at manager and overhaul the coaching staff, perhaps entirely.  For Greinke, I could be see him being re-signed, since he still ate some innings and posted decent numbers.

Is Dylan Crews the consensus 1:1 pick in next years draft right now?
Mark P
8:34
Gonzalez and Jenkins are getting some buzz, but Crews is getting most of the 1-1 attention at the moment.

Of course, absolutely tons can still happen between now and the draft, so stay tuned
Padres
8:34
What free agents do you see the Padres keeping?
Mark P
8:38
The list includes Clevinger, Bell, Manaea, Myers (when his option is declined), Stammen, Pierce Johnson, Drury, Nick Martinez (if he opts out) and Profar (if he opts out)

Of that group, I think we can safely write off Myers, Manaea, and Drury.  The most likely to come back of the others might be Stammen, who has become a SD staple and wouldn't cost all that much.  For the bigger names, Josh Bell is interesting given how he's struggled so much since the trade --- might be the Padres just want to move on, or would they still want to retain him at maybe a bargain price?

Have you ever come across a player and they were exceptionally nice?
Mark P
8:39
I've had the pleasure of meeting several ballplayers over the course of my career, and i haven't had a real bad experience with any of them.  In terms of the ones who stand out as particularly nice, Raul Ibanez, Curtis Granderson, and Jim Thome all come to mind.

8:40
Do you think the Guardians success will cause other GM’s to go with youth and pass on older players?
Mark P
8:41
I think you've already seen a movement around baseball to try and get players to the majors earlier, though Cleveland is an extreme example.  The Guards have been so good at player development for so long that what they're doing isn't truly a surprise, and it naturally also helps that they're in a pretty weak division.
Natitude
8:42
Are there any lingering injury concerns with Mackenzie Gore? Thought he would have debuted for the Nationals by now.
Mark P
8:43
According to the most recent reports, the Nats hope they can get him into at least one game before the season is over. Gore is rehabbing at Triple-A, and was up to four innings in his most recent outing
Qualifying Mike
8:44
Who do you expect to accept and decline qualifying offers?
Mark P
8:46
I'm not sure any players stand out as particularly realistic candidates to accept a QO.  There are a lot of guys who will be issued a QO and obviously turn it down, but if one of the "borderline" group (i.e. Tyler Anderson, Mitch Haniger, maybe Clevinger) is given a qualifying offer, I can see them taking it
Cy Young
8:47
Who is the AL front runner?  Any chance our guy Manoah makes it?
Mark P
8:48
My guess is still probably Verlander, since he's been able to return from the IL with no ill effects.

One theory....what if some writers decide to vote for Ohtani as Cy Young, as a consolation prize of sorts for voting Judge as MVP?  Among all AL pitchers, Ohtani is third in fWAR, so it's not like he isn't deserving.

Will Devers hit free agency next year?
Mark P
8:49
Yes
Mark
8:49
The Jays haven't been the team some expected them to be going into this year, although it's been a good season,  if you could improve any facet of the team what would it be?
Mark P
8:51
Bench depth, at least one more good SP, and bullpen depth.

In general, I'd also like to see the Jays add at least one left-handed hitter to the lineup.  Toronto has a lot of right-handed bats who mostly have the same approach at the plate, which I feel is part of the reason why they're prone to team-wide slumps
Ken
8:52
Why is MLB having every team play against one another next season? Are fans really clamoring for that Marlins v. A's three game series?
Mark P
8:53
I like the idea of a more variety, since I think I speak for a lot of fans in saying that I'm a little tired of the same divisional matchups over and over again.  Playing 76 games (nearly half the schedule) against the same four teams is just a bit much.
Ohtani
8:53
Is he the LeBron James of MLB. He should be MVP every year but it doesn’t work that way
Mark P
8:54
"Does that mean we get Ohtani for 11 seasons?" --- Cleveland fans
Brewers
8:54
Odds we luck into a wild card? If so, odds we get past the first round (knowing past the second round ain't gonna likely happen)?
Mark P
8:56
All nine of the Brewers' games are at home, and they're only 1.5 games behind Philly for the wild card.  The Phillies, meanwhile, have only road games.

It'll be tough for Milwaukee but it's hardly the biggest deficit that has ever been overcome.  However, the Brewers will have to actually overcome it --- in the event of a tie, the Phillies get the wild card due to a better head-to-head record.
Future manager
8:58
Whos name out there would make a good mananger?
Mark P
8:59
Pretty much every time you hear Stephen Vogt's name mentioned, "future manager" is attached, so I think he seems like the best bet
