Is AJ Pollock opting in for 8m more?
Mark P
9:02
Given Pollock's underwhelming numbers, it sure seems likely.

Thoughts on Mattingly leaving?
Mark P
9:04
I was a little surprised Mattingly was retained after the ownership change, but it became increasingly likely that he was going to be out the door after Jeter left.

Mattingly seems like a decent candidate to land another job as early as next season.  The Rangers or (if La Russa isn't retained) White Sox could each have interest

In Yankees vs. the field, what percentage chance do you see Judge signing with each?
Mark P
9:06
I favor the Yankees, but maybe only by a 55-45 or 60-40 margin at best.  It still surprised me that the Yankees (even with their aversion to extensions) didn't lock Judge up at least a year ago, and maybe they simply don't think Judge is a good bet to keep producing as he ages.
deGrom stay or go
9:07
Similar to question to the one about Judge. And are there any indications he doesn’t want to return to Queens?
Mark P
9:09
I believe both Judge and deGrom have publicly said that they've love to stay in New York, but then again, it would be news if a player "didn't" say that before free agency.

If I'm deGrom, I probably feel better now than I did a year ago about the Mets both as an organization and as a contender.  And, if the Mets feel deGrom is worth it, they certainly don't balk at paying him big money

Does he stay or go?   Oh, just kidding….probably going back to Cubs for about $2M
Mark P
9:12
The Cubs have arbitration control over Reyes for the next two seasons, and if they tender him a contract, he'll get some kind of a raise over his current $4.55MM salary.  That's still a pretty reasonable flier to take on a player who put up big power numbers as recently as 2021.  My guess is that Chicago keeps him

Vogt to Miami to manage!
Mark P
9:14
Ha, not sure if Vogt is quite ready to immediately jump into a managerial job.  It'll be interesting to see what direction the Marlins take with their hire....will it be another veteran like Mattingly, or maybe a more new-school, first-time manager?

Tito has the youngest team in baseball, and drove the Guards to win the Central? Should he be MOY?
Mark P
9:16
Francona or Brandon Hyde have to be the two favorites, and frankly, I kind of favor Hyde simply because the O's becoming competitive is even more unlikely than Cleveland winning the Central
9:17
Like, I predicted the Guardians to make the playoffs before the season.  But nobody had the Orioles coming close to a winning season.

Do the redsox take advantage of the money coming off the books this winter or do they tear it all down?
Mark P
9:20
A big splurge is likelier than a teardown, just because it isn't in the Red Sox DNA to truly rebuild.  But that said, I also wonder if any big spending is coming, since that seems to run counter to Bloom's (and ownership's) vision to how the team should be run going forward.

It's not that the Red Sox can't or won't spend, and obviously they signed Trevor Story to a big deal last winter.  But going on a big spree and landing three or four big free agents also seems pretty unlikely.

What is my first off season move?
Mark P
9:22
Hiring a general manager. As upset as I am about not being hired for the PBO job myself, I will humbly re-submit my resume for the GM position.  Just scratch out the word "president of baseball ops" and "iron fist" on the resume and replace it with "general manager" and "good team player."

Ricketts was quoted saying Hoyer has control of spending.. true or pointing blame else where?
Mark P
9:23
I mean, ownership ultimately has "control" of spending.  I assume Hoyer is working under a budget, and he is allowed to spend however he wishes under the ceiling of that budget.  Like, if the Cubs sign a guy to a $2MM contract, Hoyer probably doesn't have to check upstairs first.
9:24
If Hoyer is considering signing a guy to a $100MM contract, of course, then he will need to get the green light
CF options
9:25
Best CF options this offseason whose name is not Judge?
Mark P
9:26
Nimmo by a good margin.  Judge isn't really a true center fielder, of course...he has done a solid job in part-time duty, but I certainly don't think teams see him as a viable long-term option up the middle

What do you think about what Pujols has done?
Mark P
9:27
It's been a pretty incredible run, especially considering that he was posting pretty uninspiring numbers as recently as midseason.  But, it made for a magical time for Cardinals fans and baseball fans in general

9:28
If the Padres miss the playoffs, will there be major changes coming to SD?
Mark P
9:30
Preller signed a contact extension last year that keeps him in SD through the 2026 season.  So even with the big disappointment of another playoff miss (if it happens), Preller is probably still safe, since it would be a bit of an embarrassment for the Padres to fire him before that extension officially begins.

But I also don't think it's a reach to say that 2023 would then be Preller's last chance.  If the excuse in 2021 was the manager, and the excuse this season Tatis, 2023 might well be Preller's proverbial strike three.

How do you guys choose which questions to answer? Just for people who want to get answered
Mark P

If multiple people are asking variations on the same question, I'll cover that topic.  But in general, I try to address stuff I haven't already addressed (or at least, haven't recently addressed) in other chats

Then how do you explain answering a thousand Jo Adell questions?
Mark P

People seriously ask about Jo Adell in virtually every chat.  I realize it's in part because it's a running joke at this point, but still, Angels fans seem desperate to unload this guy

Pretty rough offensive year for an underperforming tiger team, especially offensively. How many of these guys are actually ML players- I’m asking about the Badoos and Candelarios.
Mark P
9:36
Candelario might end up being a non-tender candidate, but he posted very good numbers in both 2020 and 2021.  If he is dropped or traded, he might be a very interesting bounce-back candidate for another club.

But in general, such a team-wide drop in production seems like a coaching or preparation problem.  It's not like Detroit was exactly a prime offensive club heading into 2022, but I don't think I've ever seen an entire team have such a total breakdown at the plate
