Do you think the Bryan Reynolds could be available
Mark P
9:36
THE Bryan Reynolds?!

He's available for the right price, though the Pirates' idea of "the right price" is gigantic, by all reports.  Baltimore does have the premium prospect depth to make such a strike, however, and landing Reynolds would be a fun move for the O's to announce that they're contenders.
Pitch Count
9:36
Why do pitch counts only include in game pitches and exclude bullpen and between innings pitches?
Mark P
9:37
Teams actually keep track of non-official pitches as well, just to keep full account of how much their hurlers are throwing.  But, the max-effort, in-game efforts are naturally given the most import.
Angelito
9:38
Verlander to the Angels??
Correra
9:39
Do I make sense for the angels
Mark P
9:40
It's probably unlikely that any big-name free agents sign for an organization where the ownership is up in the air, the front office/manager could both be different in 12 months' time, and Ohtani could be headed elsewhere next winter

Do you think tigers new president will trade any of the young pitchers we have?
Mark P
9:41
Since most of them are injured or are recovering from recent notable injuries, nope.  Other teams will be wary, and a new PBO might not want to give up on a promising young pitcher before he knows what he really has in them
Nathan

Do you think Ohtani considers east coast teams or is he still likely looking west coast only?
Mark P
9:43
It's possible his geographic preferences have shifted after living in North America for a few years

How much does an emotional win help in the next series?
Mark P
9:45
What's the old cliche about momentum only lasting as long as the next game's starting pitcher?  Obviously such a stirring win will help the Mariners' psyche, but they face a tall order in Houston

So, after blowing a 7-1 lead, do you see the Jays making changes for next season?
Mark P
9:47
"First of all, it was an 8-1 lead," Mark wrote, while gritting his teeth

Changes are inevitable, and I dare say that big changes are necessary.  The Jays are a good but flawed team, and I don't see them getting much further in the playoffs (or in the playoffs at all) if they return with 80% the same roster or something.

If the White Sox decided to trade Andrew Vaughn what could they get for him?
Mark P
9:50
A good return, given Vaughn's prospect pedigree, what he's already done as a big league hitter, and the (maybe likely) certainty that he'll improve at the plate if he is moved to 1B/DH rather than the outfield.

I assume in your scenario, the Sox deal Vaughn, then re-sign Abreu?  That might be a smoother way of addressing Chicago's many roster needs than letting Abreu just leave in free agency

With how good the AL East is right now, does this offseason have enough realistically available to the Red Sox to make them contenders?  Seems like they're a good bit more than 1-2 additions away.
Mark P
9:52
The Red Sox have shown a propensity for bouncing back after bad seasons, though you're right, the roster seems to have quite a few holes (and more could develop if Bogaerts leaves).

Does it make sense to tender Bellinger a contract and then try and trade him, rather than lose him for nothing?
Mark P
9:55
The other option is to tender him a deal, try to trade him before Spring Training, and then release him before Opening Day if no trade materializes.
9:56
In that scenario, the Dodgers would only owe a fraction of whatever Bellinger's arb salary ends up being (a raise, even a minimal one, over his current $17MM salary)

9:57
What kind of trade Value might Yan Gomes have on a one year deal?
Mark P
9:59
Assuming Contreras leaves, also trading Gomes would leave Chicago very thin behind the plate, since Miguel Amaya is still working his way back from TJ surgery
10:00
I would suspect the Cubs signed Gomes to that multi-year deal for the very scenario of Contreras eventually departing via trade or free agency, so they probably hang onto him as a backup option.  Gomes' trade value also isn't very high after a forgettable season.
10:01
I guess it's also a possibility that the Cubs do clean house at catcher and then trade for a Sean Murphy or someone, which can't be ruled out.  Murphy is under enough long-term control that he would fit the Cubs' plans to contend in the relatively near future (even if they may or may not be "all in" on 2023, so to speak)

10:02
Would a team rather face the likes of the Dodgers and Astros in a 5-game DS series instead of a 7-game CS series? Feels like the shorter the series, the greater the chance for an ‘unexpected’ outcome.
Mark P

Am i the only person who thinks Avila should have been given one more year?  All the “experts” thought his offseason acquisitions were solid.. that Greene and Torkelson and Mize and Skubal are future stars, etc.    who could have foreseen the hideous number of injuries?
Mark P
10:06
As someone who picked Detroit to win the AL Central preseason, their total collapse caught me by surprise.  While the pitching injuries were a nightmare, what I suspect sunk Avila was that the lineup (which was relatively healthy) was such an abject disaster.  If "only" injuries were the problem, that's one thing.....but with the other half of the team so drastically underperforming, enough was enough for ownership

10:07
Will you please buy the Reds?
Mark P
10:08
I mean, I've already been asked by Angels fans and Nationals fans to buy their teams, and I'm only so wealthy!
Rays
10:09
Man hats off to Cleveland but the Rays offense is incredibly weak. How do they address this in the offseason?
Mark P
10:11
As noted earlier, Brandon Lowe is coming back, there should be more help from the farm, and I forgot to note that a full and healthy year for Wander Franco will be a huge boost.

I do wonder, since the Rays have at least toyed with the idea of making a big free agent splash (i.e. Freeman) recently, maybe this is the year they break the bank by their standards and sign a regular position player?

will yadi be a 1st ballot hall of gamer?
Mark P
10:12
There are enough questions about Molina that making it on the first ballot may be a reach, but I do think he'll eventually get voted in
Adam
10:12
How can you justify paying DeGrom when he hasn't pitched a full season in so long?
Mark P
10:13
Because when he has pitched, he has looked like an ace.  The injury situation will definitely affect his market, but deGrom will score a big payday, even if on a high-AAV and relatively shorter-term deal
