What’s his problem? Inability to adjust, launch angle, trouble hitting junk, the lack of juiced ball, or am I missing something? MVP’s his age don’t regress like he did unless they’re hurt
Mark P
10:15
Injuries, as he just hasn't been himself since undergoing that shoulder surgery after the 2020 season

10:17
If healthy can the twins contend for the division or was their collapse more than injuries?
Mark P
10:18
There were enough questions about the bullpen and rotation that even a fully healthy Twins team might not have been able to overtake Cleveland.  But it would've been close, and Minnesota might've been able to sneak a wild card.

But that's also going in the opposite direction and assuming full health, which never happens
Mark P
10:19
Is the Crow-Armstrong trade why the Mets weren’t willing to make a big deal this year? You think they are regretting not making a big move now
Mark P
10:20
Giving away a top prospect for a rental player is something the Mets weren't willing to do again, especially when Alvarez plays at a position of need.  Now, hypothetically, could or should the Mets have swung a trade for a player with more years of control?  Maybe, but we don't know what offers were necessarily out there, and such controllable players have even higher price tags
10:21
Also, in fairness to the Mets, it's not like they "collapsed."  It's just that the Braves went nuclear-hot over the last four months.

What could the Mariners get for Marco Gonzales this off-season?
Mark P
10:25
I think some teams will stay away from Gonzales on principle since he's such a low-strikeout pitcher, but a durable and generally successful starter on a relatively inexpensive contract will get plenty of attention.

Trading him would carry some risk, however, as then the M's would more or less by giving the fifth spot to Flexen.  Not that Flexen couldn't handle the role, but having him as a sixth starter/swingman might be a very attractive scenario for the Mariners in 2023

Lack of offense a concern for Guardians going into New York?
Mark P
10:26
Most definitely.  The Guards' pitching will need an even bigger effort to stifle New York's offense over five games, especially since Bieber and McKenzie aren't immediately available for

Will Murphy bring back what the A’s would consider fair value this off season or will they have to wait a year or the trade deadline in ‘23?
Mark P
10:30
Even with Shea L. ready for regular playing time, the A's don't have to decide on Murphy just yet, since is only entering arb eligibility now.  If a team doesn't meet Oakland's high asking price, they can keep waiting.

Honest question, who says no.......Guardians send Logan Allen to the Nats for Joey Meneses.
Mark P
10:34
For those confused, this is the "other" Logan Allen, drafted by Cleveland in the second round in 2020.  The younger Allen is a top-10 prospect in the Guards' system, and as good as the Guardians are at replenishing themselves with quality minor league pitching, I doubt they'd move Allen for a wild card like Meneses.

Granted, Meneses is a very cool story and he hit extremely well in his rookie year.  But it was enough of a surprise that I think a lot of teams would still need to see him prove it over a larger sample size before considering moving a top-10 prospect

Mark, who do you think will be the biggest named frontline SP traded this Winter? Also, will typical Winter Meetings take place this December?
Mark P
10:37
Yep, the first "normal" Winter Meetings in quite some time will take place in December in sunny San Diego

Pablo Lopez comes to mind as a trade candidate, but Miami could or will try to move their less-established arms first to land a big bat, before agreeing to deal someone of Lopez's ilk

We’re you surprised to learn that deGrom was leaning towards leaving the Mets before the season?
Mark P
10:39
Not overly, given all of the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the Mets organization and lack of onfield success for much of deGrom's tenure.

I think Chris Young is in a tough spot in Texas. Lots of talent on the way in a rebuilt farm system. But the mandate us to win now. Does he pull a Dombrowski and swing some headline deals for players to make immediate impacts or does he be patient with the promising prospects?
Mark P
10:42
In sense, the plan hasn't changed too much, since the expectation was always that 2023 was the true "go for it" year in Arlington, and more big moves were coming.  It's just that Young expected the team to be better this year, and he didn't expect to be the one now calling the shots in the front office.

It'll be interesting to see if Young sticks mostly to free agent signings, the trade route, or both.  Since ownership is willing to spend, signing big players is a simpler way to add talent without giving up prospects

Sorry for the delay, had a minor internet glitch.  Back to the action!
2022/23 off-season

Looks like this is the year to hire a POBO or GM. Do you see click or stearns leaving Houston and Milwaukee?
Mark P
10:47
There is apparently some real debate over whether or not Click is retained in Houston.  How about this scenario....a deal is worked out for Stearns to join the Mets, and the Brewers then hire Click as the new PBO?
(Though, one would imagine GM Matt Arnold would just get promoted to the top job in Milwaukee if Stearns did indeed depart.)

The Jays had a one dimensional offence and subpar bullpen.  This was never going to be the year.  The harsh loss will motivate the FO to make tangible improvements. So this game was good….right?
Mark P
10:50
On paper, yes.  It's very easy to sit here and say "oh, you have to be bold and swing this generation's version of the McGriff/Fernandez trade," as if those deals are easy to make.  But I do think that more than just tweaks are needed with the Jays roster

10:52
Could you see Ian happ and a marlins pitcher be the backbone of a trade?
Mark P
10:53
Happ would be a great answer to Miami's need for a center fielder, and a good hitter in general.  Happ is only under control through 2023, but since we're talking just the framework of a trade, other players could certainly be involved to find something that fits for both sides

10:55
Any shot the braves make a splash this off-season?
Mark P
10:56
Can't rule out the Braves on anything big.  If Swanson leaves and they don't just install Grissom at shortstop, there are lots of creative things they can do to fill that void

Alek Thomas to Pittsburgh for Henry Davis? Who says no and why?
Mark P
10:59
I would love that kind of move for the sheer novelty of it, though it would be unusual to see the Bucs move Davis so soon after drafting him.  Frankly, if I was Mike Hazen and the Pirates were open to that deal, it would make me wonder if something was up with Davis.

Molina is definitely getting into the hall. Give us one reason why you're less certain.
Mark P

I agree that he's getting into the HOF, but just not in his first year.

any chance the Mariners sign Correa or Turner? They need some more pop to tangle with the Stros and NL titans.
Mark P
11:03
It would take a huge investment, obviously, but the M's aren't shy in making bold moves.  Such a signing would move JP Crawford off shortstop, though that would also fill the 2B hole if Frazier isn't retained

What big piece from the Rays pitching staff gets moved this off season? Find it hard to believe they will keep McClanahan, Glasnow, Rasmussen and Springs.
