Good resume, well-respected coach, feels like he deserved a shot after coming close on so many other jobs.  Seems like a good hire on paper, but time will tell

Is it Ozzie or bust for White Sox?
Mark P
8:23
Obviously Jerry Reinsdorf does what he wants with his team without bowing to public opinion, but that would be some weird optics, following one retread White Sox manager with another.

Beans?
Mark P
8:25
Bees?!

Wait...
Zac

Why didnt/couldn't mlb move up the start of the world series once both teams were locked in? This last break was longer than the bye rounds for 1st place finishers.
Mark P
8:26
The schedule was already locked in for TV purposes.
Am I Crazy?
8:26
I feel like I'm the only one who feels this way, but I don't want my favorite team to sign DeGrom. He's 35 year old. Has had lots of injuries over the past couple of years. And we could get 2 or 3 good players for what he's going to want per year. With his best years likely behind him, I'll take a pass. Am I crazy?
Mark P
8:26
This isn't an unfair take.  As good as deGrom is, there is certainly a lot of injury risk involved.
Looking for Offense
8:27
I’ve seen alot overt past few days saying Miami has interest in trading for Adolis Garcia to fill their need for a CF (one who can actually produce offensively). But isn’t TEX looking to add another OF this offseason? Wouldn’t trading Adolis just open the need to acquire another OF?
Mark P
8:27
Yes, but Texas is also willing to spend, so they could fill that outfield hole more easily in free agency.  If they can, say, move Garcia and land Lopez as part of a trade, that might be a preferable pitching addition than spending on a free agent
Joe
8:28
If you were a major leaguer who could only get a minor league contract with a spring training invite, would you go to a place like Cincinnati where playing time is open or to a contender where you need a prayer to make the roster?
Mark P
8:29
Depends on where I'm at in my career, among other factors.  But in general, I think most guys would take the deal with the clearer path to playing time
Zac
8:29
Ahmed Rosario and Shane Bieber seem like 2 likely trade candidates. If both go in the same deal, where would they fit best?
Mark P
8:30
Bieber isn't likely to be dealt, I'd be stunned if that happened.  Rosario, however, does seem like a more logical trade candidate, but that would depend on how high the Guardians are on any of their young middle infielders stepping up (I would presume Gimenez moves to SS in this scenario)
Thrillhouse

Where do you see Christian Vasquez signing?
Mark P
8:31
Just my speculation, but St. Louis seems like a good fit

Who's your favorite football team?
Mark P
8:33
....sigh, Green Bay
Bravo
8:33
What are the chances Atlanta goes over 200 million next year?
Mark P
8:34
They're already at $185MM projected, so I'd say the odds are pretty good
Rafi and Chaim
8:35
How far apart are we, really, and what are the odds an extension gets done this offseason?
Mark P
8:35
If the gap is actually still close to $100MM, that seems like way too big a bridge to cross for an extension, unless one or both sides make a big shift in their thinking
Stros Fan
8:36
If the Astros win the World Series, do you think that removes or dilutes some of the stigma of the "cheating scandal" from 2017? Or make it worse?
Mark P
8:37
It's still recent enough that a lot of fans (and rival teams) have hard feelings, especially since the Astros will probably view this as a "redemption" championship.
Though it's interesting so relatively few of the 2017 Astros are actually still on the team
Zac
8:38
Do the Astros NEED Verlander back? Or are they reassigning that money to help with outfield and overall depth?
Mark P
8:39
The Astros might be just about the only team with enough pitching depth to make retaining Verlander less than a true "need."

But, it's also Justin Verlander.  Losing him would be a real blow, and don't forget....you can never have too much pitching.
Judy
8:40
Best guess where Judge ends up and his contract?
Mark P
8:40
I slightly feel (by maybe a 52-48 margin) that Judge signs elsewhere.  He's definitely getting $300MM, it's just a question of how far over $300MM teams are willing to go
Frank
8:41
Have you sent your résumé in for the white Sox managerial opening?
Mark P
8:42
You bet.  Red-coloured font on the header, couple of snazzy pictures, a testimonial from my mom about how cool I am....it's quite the resume.
Marlins
8:42
Wouldn’t Trea Turner make sense for Marlins? He’s a local product and isn’t it time Sherman started showing fans he’ll start to spend with young pitching.
Mark P
8:43
We've had no indication that Sherman is open to spending at that level, and until he says otherwise or makes a big splurge, we have to keep assuming the Marlins will be keeping a pretty limited payroll
Arenado
8:45
Did Nolan's agent gauge interest in his client before extending? Seems silly to opt in without extra years or $, especially so close to free agency.
Mark P
8:46
Arenado has said many times how much he loves playing in St. Louis, and I think he craves the stability after the unhappiness of the end of his time with the Rockies.  It's not like five years/$144MM is exactly being underpaid, and keep in mind, Arenado already got the "extra year" added when his contract was reworked as part of the trade

8:47
Has a popular managerial candidate like espada ever missed as many times as he has? He’s something like 0-7 in interviews
Mark P
8:48
Off the top of my head, I feel like Sandy Alomar Jr. interviewed for like a dozen managerial jobs without getting hired.
Joshua
8:48
I understand that his value is extremely diminished, but would Victor Robles be a decent change of scenery type trade for a team looking for a defensive first CFer?
Mark P
8:49
Sure, but the Nats wouldn't be getting much back in return
