Hope Skip made the right call accepting the Marlins job. Good baseball man and hope he gets the support in South Florida. Any candidates you can identify for Cards bench coach opening.
Mark P
8:50
Knowing how the Cards usually operate, they'll promote from within the system.

Vaughn, Kopech, and Robert to the Angels for Trout, who says no?

What happens if the Yankees lose out on Judge? Do you see them going after a big bat to replace him? Or trying internal options?
Mark P
8:52
If think if Judge did leave, the Yankees would have to make a big corresponding move.  He was just such a gigantic part of their offense that the Yankees would almost need another star (or even two) to fill the void

Could Angels do a 2 year 90 mil extension? Short term?
Mark P
8:53
He could, but why?  He's got his big $30MM payday for 2023 already, so why kick the can down the road for free agency by two years?

With the news of Oakland most likely losing the A’s, does this give the Giants too many high media markets where they are the only professional team? They will have control over San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Fresno, all large markets. Will this area become a priority in expansion? What are your thoughts?
Mark P
8:55
The Giants have territorial rights over that entire area, and they would surely block any attempt to move an expansion team into the Bay Area.

This was actually an issue for the A's, since they couldn't move to San Jose or Fremont since the Giants held the territorial rights (even though the A's are in the same territory)

If Arenado did opt out, would the Rockies still have to pay him the money they owed? Maybe he was happy to keep letting them pick up part of the tab
Mark P
8:56
The Rockies are still indeed on the hook for that $31MM, due to Arenado staying in his deal.  It would be kind of funny if he did this out of pure spite, but I'll bet that was part of his thinking in another way.  Like, "hey, that's $31MM more the Cards have to spend on more upgrades."

Would the Jays be interested in Tristan MacKenzie from the Guardians? Would Kirk be a comparable return, or would one side need to add something to make it of interest to the other.
Mark P
8:57
It wouldn't be a one-for-one, and I kind of doubt the Guardians would deal McKenzie at all.  He is a prime building block for them.

Do they keep the A's or change the name?
Mark P

I hope they keep it, just to keep the "Athletics" name going into a fourth city and with 120+ years of tradition

Is Dansby more valuable than Turner? Other than steals, he plays better defense, hits more home runs, and seems like a stronger leader.
Mark P
9:03
Turner has been the decidedly better player over the course of their careers, so I'd say Turner is more valuable.

The Alexander Canario injury sets up a chain reaction for the Cubs in so far as roster formation.  Where do the Cubs go with the CF position going forward?
Mark P
9:05
Both Canario and Davis having injury problems is a big concern, especially since it looks like Canario will be out for quite a while.  In terms of 2023, Happ and Hoerner are there to handle center field, and hopefully the prospects get healthy and work their way into the big league picture

M's make cost cutting moves by trading Winker, Flexen and Marco Gonzalez for mid level prospects?
Mark P
9:07
The Mariners don't really need to cut costs since they have only $132MM or so committed to 2023.  And it's not like any of those three guys are overly expensive.

As for the pitching question, I'd actually keep both Flexen and Gonzales.  If one is traded, one injury suddenly leaves the M's hurting for depth.

All the talk about the Jays is their catcher surplus, but don't they have a middle infield surplus as well, with Espinal, Biggio, Merrified and Bo. Would one of the 1st 3 bring back a bullpen piece?
Mark P
9:08
I'm not sure it's really a surplus since it's an open question if Espinal, Biggio, or even Merrifield at this point are everyday players.  A trade is possible, but all three have relatively limited value....Espinal probably has the most upside.

Andrew McCutchen reunion with Pirates via trade?
Mark P

McCutchen surely wants to play for a contender as he nears the end of his career

Who are your top 5 pitchers of all time and who currently could knock one of them out of the top 5?
Mark P

Maddux, Randy Johnson, Walter Johnson, Satchel Paige, Lefty Grove
If I thought about it for more than a few seconds, Bob Gibson, Seaver, Christy Mathewson, Clemens, Carlton are right up there

If Hendricks and Stroman have sub 3.50 ERA at the deadline could we expect both being traded?
Mark P

If the Cubs aren't in the pennant race, maybe.

How have the Angels been so bad for so long considering their payroll and talent?  Do you think they are a couple of key moves away from contention or do the issues run deeper?
Mark P
9:15
It's a number of issues.  It seems like Moreno takes too much of a hand in baseball operations, plus the front office and farm system hasn't been able to consistently draft and develop talent.
9:16
It's not a long list of players who have gotten better after arriving in Anaheim, and a lot of guys have suddenly turned south after becoming Angels.

If anything, it might make Trout and Ohtani seem even more spectacular

You forgot Bob Feller
Mark P

Oops, you're right, Feller should be at least top 10

For everyone suggesting Nolan Ryan, Pedro Martinez, Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, etc.....there are a lot of great pitchers in history!  Hard to narrow it down to just five or 10

What does Swanson’s contract look like? Can the Braves really afford him after all these signing s?
