He'll get over $100MM for sure, probably closer to $120MM.  Atlanta has been so aggressive that I lean towards thinking he will re-sign, since Braves ownership has boosted spending to a huge extent
Free agency
9:21
Team that is going to spend like crazy in free agency?
Mark P
9:21
Get ready for another Rangers splurge
Brendan McKay
9:21
what does my future hold?
Mark P
9:22
Just getting back onto the field would be a major victory.  After TOS surgery, and a shoulder surgery, AND Tommy John surgery, that's a horrific list of injuries to try and overcome

Corbin Burnes for Bryan Reynolds. Who says no
Mark P
9:24
Ha, what a pivot!  The Pirates say no, since they're not likely to contend over Burnes' remaining two years of control.

Correa, Turner, Bogaerts and Swanson all on the market, all looking for mega-deals. Does the abundance of SS free agents depress their markets? Are there actually 4 teams who will hand out 4 mega-deals to each of them?
Mark P
9:26
The big shortstops on the market last year all got paid, with the caveat of Correa not getting the mega-deal he wanted.  Then again, last winter was also an anomaly due to the lockout, so it's possible that in a normal offseason with more time to negotiate, Correa lands his $300MM.

In general, always bet on good players to land good contracts

Is Jed Hoyers “intelligent spending” comment just a fancy way to say don’t expect a top free agent?
Mark P
9:28
If the Cubs spent, say, $40MM of their 2023 payroll on Judge, or $40MM on three players who all played well in 2023, the latter option makes their team better overall.
9:29
Obviously signing a superstar makes for better headlines (and often good results, at least in the short term), but plenty of teams have succeeded in making smaller moves.

Been looking at some real estate in LA the last few weeks, thinks its a good time for me to buy?
Mark P
9:30
Sure.  I doubt the Dodgers are moving Lux any time soon.  He can go ahead and get that de-Lux apartment in the sky!
9:31
Yes, that's a reference to a 40-year-old sitcom theme.  Timely as ever, Mark!
Cashman
9:32
Am I coming back as GM?
Mark P
9:33
Seems like it.  If I recall correctly, Cashman also didn't his new deal until his old one expired, and he went until something like December before inking that next contract.
There haven't been any rumblings about ownership being displeased by Cashman's results
Randy Arozarena
9:34
Is the Rays are selling, who's buying?
Mark P
9:36
He'll carry appeal to a lot of teams, apart from the caveat that everyone should be terrified of trading with the Rays.

If he does get moved, it might not happen until later in the offseason, maybe during Spring Training.  If a team misses out on other hitting targets in free agency, they can turn to Arozarena as a backup option
Backup in terms of being a Plan B, not a backup in terms of being a bench player, that is

Has MLBTR scheduled the Cleveland Guardians chat?
Mark P
9:37
As the person scheduled to write the Guardians offseason outlook, I can say that it's likely coming this week!

Sean Murphy for James Triantos?
Mark P
9:38
The A's would want a lot more than just Triantos
kurt the hurt
9:38
do the tigers roll out more of their triple a pitchers next season or sign someone new?
Mark P
9:39
Seems like it would be a good idea to sign one or two veterans to one-year, low-cost contracts just to get some pitching depth on hand.  Tigers have so many injury question marks that they need some kind of stability in the rotation

Twins front office likes their spectacle moves (Davidson trade, Correa show, etc) so what are they going to do this winter? Something splashy to get a shortstop, OF or some arms, or maybe a free agent. They have money and spots, so what's going to be their big move?
Mark P
9:41
If any of the big shortstops are still lingering on the market by February, I wonder if the Twins might offer them something like the 2.0 version of the Correa contract.

I may be the minority, but the days of waiting for guys like Hudson and Flaherty to produce are getting old. Wainwright is back, Mikolas, and Montgomery are the ONLY ones I'd be counting on. St Louis needs offense, but great pitching will beat great offenses. Trade for Murphy from Oakland, sign Pederson to platoon with the Carlson, sign a decent SS like Iglesias. After this, who is a realistic trade target at a SP? Or more likely to sign one? In your opinion
Mark P
9:43
Murphy is certainly a possibility, Pederson makes sense, and I'm not sure Iglesias is really a need since DeJong is still there as a backup, and Edman/SS and Gorman/Donovan at 2B is a good middle infield combo
9:45
The Cardinals are kind of a difficult team to project in terms of pitching trades, since they've shown a knack for getting some veterans on track in midseason.  They might make an addition that seems underwhelming on paper, but ends up working out just fine.  In fact, STL might wait until midseason again before addressing any needs in the rotation, choosing to roll the dice with Flaherty, Hudson, Pallante, and company
Jared Walsh
9:46
Will I come back strong after TOS surgery?
Mark P
9:47
Hard to say.  Pitchers in general (but not all) have a hard time recovering from TOS surgery, but it might be different for a position player.  The surgery itself is still so new that we don't have much of a paper trail on recoveries.
9:48
We've hit the two-hour mark, so let's wrap things up.  Thanks for all the questions, and the whole MLBTR crew will continue doing the team-related chats (and more general chats) throughout the week.
