No reason for the Rockies to sign Nimmo right? They’re at least a few years away from contending and are at a huge payroll already
Mark P
7:18
Yeah, I don't love the Rockies' chances of winning the Nimmo sweepstakes.  The thing is that the Rox don't see themselves as "a few years away" and thus might bid accordingly, but in lieu of an overpay, Nimmo is going to find equally big money from another team that is closer to contending in 2023
SteveM
7:18
Will Colorado EVER contend?
Mark P
7:19
2017 and 2018 weren't that long ago.  But as presently constructed and operated, I have a hard time seeing the Rockies making a run any time soon

In your opinion, what’s the market for Austin Hedges going to look like? Worst hitter in the league, but one of its top defenders is in my mind going to lead to an interesting market for him
Mark P
7:20
Lots of teams need catching, so Hedges will certainly attract interest.  If a team has a defensively-shaky catcher who can hit, Hedges would be an ideal choice as a platoon partner or semi-backup
Braves
7:22
If Dansby walks, does Alex call about guys like Willy Adames and Nico Horner?
Mark P
7:22
Adames would make a lot of sense as a trade target.  Hoerner makes sense too, but the Cubs seem less likely to trade him if they're really aiming to start contending in 2023.
Negotiation
7:23
Following up your comment, can you a team saying to Judge "Our offer is 8/320 you have one week to decide, or we pull the offer.
Mark P
7:25
I'm admittedly not an expert on high-level contract negotiation tactics, but the idea of a "deadline" to a major free agent who has options seems like an unnecessarily aggressive move.  If you're willing to offer Judge 8/320, why undercut yourself by putting an arbitrary deadline on him?
Trout
7:26
With change of ownership 2023 could be another lost season, should I ask for a trade? What value do I have?
Mark P
7:26
Trout obviously has a ton of trade value, but since he's on a long-term deal anyway, I don't anticipate any kind of trade request until he actually meets with the new owner.  After all, an ownership change might be just the recipe to get the Angels on track.

Yanks keep Volpe, but offer Gleyber, Peraza, Dominguez, is that enough  to get Burns
Mark P
7:27
That offer would at least get Milwaukee's attention, for certain.
Arte Moreno
7:28
Why am I selling now? Stadium deal gone bad, too many losing seasons?
Mark P
7:29
Only Moreno knows for sure, but it's hard to ignore the timing of the stadium deal falling through

I don't see trading Murphy as "helping/improving the roster". Unless they can get 2 young plug and play player + a close prospect.  Let Murphy and langaliers catch and dh- to get the most of offense out of them. Trade away you best bat and acouple years of control won't help.
Mark P
7:30
Murphy is under control through the 2025 season, and given how the A's have stripped the roster down, it is quite possible they won't be in contention for any of Murphy's three remaining arbitration seasons.  In that case, it makes sense to deal him now and acquire players who will be part of the next winning A's team

Any chance Seattle would be interested in K Wong for second  base?
Mark P
7:33
Wong's tough defensive season is a red flag.  Plus, for a Seattle team that needs hitting, Wong isn't the best fit.
Mark
7:34
Jack Flaherty to LAD for Will Smith.  Might sound far-fetched, and maybe more than Flaherty heads LA's way, but Cards probably wouldn't be able to sign him after next year and he's an LA guy.  Solves Cards' catching situation post-Yadi.
Mark P
7:35
The Dodgers would want way more than Flaherty for Will Smith, who if anything LA is likelier to lock up on a contract extension.  I realize Diego Cartaya is coming soon for the Dodgers, but if they're comfortable enough with Smith, then Cartaya becomes a major trade chip for them
Dbacks hopeful
7:38
Which LHH OF would they have to give up for Moreno and Pearson? Surely Carroll is not moving, but would Varsho, Fletcher and Walston/Jarvis get the discussion started?
Mark P
7:39
The Jays would want more than that for a Moreno-centered trade package.

Frankly, the idea of a straight Moreno-for-Carroll trade would be really cool.

7:39
Why is baseball the only sport in which free agency drags for months where the NFL, NBA , and NHL most free agents sign in the 1st week of FA
Mark P
7:40
The strict salary caps in the NHL and NFL mean that teams want to make their decisions earlier.  In the NBA, with smaller rosters and the greater impact of a single star player, they also prefer to figure things out earlier.
Philly A's
7:41
If (when) the A's move to Vegas will Fisher sell the team?
Mark P
7:42
Probably unlikely.  Surely Fisher would see a new city as a chance for big new revenues, so you'd think he would want to benefit from Vegas himself
Chaim bloom

I know minor league players can change positions but have I been preparing long-term to replace Xander for a few years now?
Mark P
7:44
Teams generally like to stock up on shortstop depth as a rule, given the importance of the position and how most shortstops can be pretty easily switched to other positions.

But, the biggest hint of a post-Bogaerts future was the Red Sox signing Trevor Story
Rob
7:45
Do you see someone hiring Sterns this year yet while he’s still controlled by Milwaukee?
Mark P
7:46
I'm still suspicious of the possibility of a "trade" for Stearns, or some team arranging to give the Brewers some compensation.  Given all the Mets speculation, it would be ironic if another team ended up poaching Stearns away from Milwaukee, yet the Astros....

7:47
Whats the biggest contract by AAV you could see the cards handing out this off-season? Would they push 20+ on a nimmo-level guy or is that out of the question?
Mark P
7:47
A $20MM-ish AAV seems reasonable, if maybe not on Nimmo in particular
David Ortiz
7:48
Will Aaron Judge be Freddie Freeman all over again? Everyone thinks he’s staying but might go somewhere else?
Mark P
7:49
Maybe it's just because it's a New York player involved and because there's more media attention, but it seems like there's a lot more buzz about Judge potentially leaving than there was Freeman buzz last year.

I joked about it earlier, but I wasn't the only one who more or less just assumed that Freeman and the Braves would eventually work things out, even with all the other suitors involved.
Fred
7:50
What was the last MLB game you attended?
Mark P
7:50
A Blue Jays/Red Sox game in Toronto's last home series of the regular season

When will harper be able to play the outfield again?
Mark P
7:52
My assumption is that he'll get surgery in the offseason and be good to go for next season, though it depends on how extensive the surgery is.  If he actually needs a TJ procedure, he won't be ready for Opening Day
