Whats the deal with Astros FO? Getting late to bring someone aboard now, is Crane just gonna ride it out without a gm for the rest of the off-season?
Mark P
11:03
My guess is that he just promotes one of the assistant GMs (Bill Firkus and company) to the top job

Am I crazy for think that the Cardinals and Cody Bellinger could be a decent match if the price for him isn't too high? They've already shown a willingness to give outfielders one-year deals (Corey Dickerson) and they highly value fielding and quickeness. Plus, they don't have an outfielder right now that's past arbitration so there's not much money wrapped up in that position.
Mark P
11:04
Makes sense to me.  In theory it creates a bit of an outfield logjam for playing time if everyone is healthy, but injuries are inevitable.

Now that the Mariners have traded for Wong, do you think they go after Nimmo to get that impact bat to round out their hitting corps?
Mark P
11:05
Nimmo would be a good fit in Seattle, and having him in left field instead of CF answers any questions about his defense

Do you think the Red Sox re-sign Xander Bogaerts?

No

Is the Jays hiring of Don Mattingly a back up option if John Schneider doesn’t work out?
Mark P
11:06
They gave Schneider a three-year deal, so obviously the front office has a good amount of faith in him.  If 2023 was a total disaster of a year, sure, I guess there could be a managerial switch made as part of the inevitable set of changes, but one might imagine Mattingly might also be gone in that scenario

Rule 5 draft preview?
Mark P
11:07
Baseball America recently had a nice preview of some of the players who might be picked on Thursday

Matt Brash, Jarred Kelenic, Cole Young, Emmerson Hancock, and one of their comp picks, enough for the Pirates to entertain a trade with the Mariners for Reynolds.
Mark P
11:09
That's a lot for Seattle to give up, but for an aggressive team with a PBO who loves trades?  Hmm....

Hi Mark, would the Ms have been better moving Crawford to second and signing a short stop? They will be in the market for another second baseman next year ……. Could they still be in the market for a free agent ss? If not since they still have money to spend could they go after a couple free agents bats?
while the Astros are getting abreu and the rangers degrom the ms moves do not seem to impactful so far
Mark P
11:12
Seattle's insistence on keeping Crawford at shortstop never made a ton of sense to me, since while he's a good player, he isn't exactly an Ozzie Smith-level defender or anything.

Now, it is possible that was just some gamesmanship on Dipoto's part, and if they actually were close to signing a shortstop, they'd have a chat with Crawford about changing positions.

Espino is untouchable in trade talks, right?
Mark P
11:13
Cleveland's Espino?  Quite probably

Looking forward to the 2023-2024 offseason, but since Cabrera is off the books, could Shohei Ohtani be a Tiger?
Mark P
11:15
I mean, he could, but Detroit doesn't seem too likely a landing spot unless ownership really opens the wallet

A game in Ottawa in 2007

Chances judge signs with the giants
Mark P
11:17
I think there's a pretty good chance.  Ken Rosenthal today mentioned that there are a couple of "mystery teams" involved in the Judge market, but it seems like the Yankees and Giants are the two lead dogs in the hunt.

Detroit is looking for a third baseman, how about Donaldson if New York eats half his salary. He can still pick it at the hot corner and he could be a bounce back candidate.
Mark P
11:20
Donaldson is owed $29MM, so even with the Yankees eating half of that, it's a question of whether or not Detroit thinks they can find a better option for $14.5MM.
Donaldson might have some value as a change of scenery type, but if you're the Tigers, you're pushing the Yankees to eat more of that salary
deGrom Texas Ranger
11:21
Does Texas get Bryan Reynolds through trade without giving up Porter, Rocker, Leiter, Carter, Jung, or Zavala? They still have some current or former top 100 prospect besides them in Duran, White, Winn, and Foscue
Mark P
11:22
Why would the Pirates settle for the Rangers' second-level prospects?

Kershaw's deal doesn't seem to be counted in the $169 million figure, so not as much flexibility as you thought.
Mark P

You are correct, I missed that one.

11:24
I watched Harrison Bader for years. If he plays a full season (140+ games) in NY, I think he will be 30/30, win a gold glove & become a fan favorite! Thoughts?
Mark P
11:25
It seems like Yankees fans totally jumped on the Bader bandwagon the moment he actually started playing.  And, hitting all those homers in the playoffs didn't hurt, either.

30/30 is very ambitious, but another Gold Glove seems like a distinct possibility

do the red sox do something big?
Mark P
11:26
I still tend to think yes, if not some huge splashy free agent signing (or re-signing Bogaerts).

You got me obsessed with Corbin Carroll for Gabriel Moreno, but what's the likelihood of ARI moving Carroll?
Mark P
11:27
Quite low!  Carroll is apparently the outfielder Arizona is least-likely to move, and he's basically untouchable.

Now, offering another star prospect like Moreno would probably at least get the D'Backs considering, but I think Arizona explores all other options before putting Carroll on the table
fascinating
11:28
What are the odds that any team that isn’t SFG or NYY lands Judge? I’m thinking less than 5%
