Yoan Moncada for Josh Donaldson? Change of scenery trade for both.
Mark P
10:32
Doesn't make much sense for the Sox to do this

Any chance the Mets go after Reynolds?
Mark P
10:33
Seems like at least half the teams in baseball have called about Reynolds, the Mets included.

10:33
It's been widely reported the Dodgers were in on JV. However, Dodgee insiders locally are saying they think the FO is looking to reset the CBT line. Signing JV to any contract would have them paying taxes, wouldn't it?
Mark P
10:34
The Dodgers' projected luxury tax number is only $168.8MM, as per Roster Resouce.  So they can sign Verlander to $40MM in AAV and still be comfortably under the $233MM threshold.
10:35
Of course, the Dodgers have more to do than just add one pitcher, but there's still plenty of tax flexibility to make other moves

10:36
If you were Dave D (Phillies?) who is your number 4 next year ?
Mark P
10:37
My fourth starter is Ranger Suarez, pushed back in the rotation because I've added another front-of-the-rotation arm

If the Guardians does get a first baseman in free agency or find one in a trade, who’s the most realistic option for them?
Mark P
10:39
You'd think Josh Bell would make sense as an alternate free agent target to Abreu
Walter
10:39
A Kluber return  to Cleveland?
Mark P
10:40
That would be fun, but veteran pitching probably isn't too high on the Guards' to-do list.  They're already pretty deep in pitchers....if anything, they might unload Plesac or Civale

Do the Angels have a shot at landing one of the big free agent short stops, or do you see them riding with who they have internally and focus more on acquiring bullpen arms?
Mark P
10:41
I think they'll stay internal.  The Angels have been busy so far, but there's a big difference between trading for Renfroe or signing Tyler Anderson than splurging on a nine-figure contract for a top shortstop

the interest by the braves in murphy is suprising. drnaud has been nails for us. and contreras is a young, talented player
Mark P
10:42
I think it's just a case of Anthopoulos doing his due diligence, plus he has a long history of making deals with Oakland's front office.  Makes sense that he would at least check in about Murphy, even if catcher isn't really a need for Atlanta
10:43
If the A's were open to a deal that was acceptable to the Braves, landing Murphy would then make Contreras a really nice trade chip for the Braves to shop

10:43
If Cards bring Quintana back, which pitcher goes?  My guess is Matz to the Mets
Mark P
10:44
Wainwright, Mikolas, Flaherty, and Montgomery are all free agents after next season.  If STL did move a pitcher, it wouldn't be Matz.

But, I actually don't think they would necessarily move anyone, since that rotation has some health question marks

Never heard the official word on Kershaw resigning with the Dodgers, he have a change of mind?
Mark P
10:47
It's a little strange that we haven't gotten official word on that signing yet, but it's not totally unusual.  In past instances of a long gap between a reported signing and the official announcement, it's usually been something innocuous like the player is on a family vacation or something
Farhan and Pete
10:47
What do we do if we miss out on all the major free agents?
Mark P
10:47
Start swinging some trades.  Or, trades and signings of some second-tier free agents....plenty of talent to be had on the next shelf down

Please steer a Red Sox fan in the right direction. I can’t seem to understand what their plan has been lately. I long for the days when the Sox were at least in the conversation for big ticket guys, which I feared once Bloom was hired. The revenue they generate certainly does not scream a need to adopt the Tampa Bay philosophy of building your roster. Thanks
Mark P
10:51
The Trevor Story signing is evidence that the Red Sox haven't put the checkbook away, or anything.  And this was a team willing to exceed the luxury tax even on a longshot chance at a playoff berth.

Ideally, it would seem like the Red Sox would want to adopt the Dodgers' strategy of building from within, finding some good hidden gems, and then augmenting that core with a big-money addition (or, signing your preferred in-house guys to big extensions).  It seems like they've hit some speed bumps in getting from step A to step B of that plan, or they have enough doubts about Bogaerts and Devers that they don't see them as good investments

Do you have a favorite Chris Farley movie or tv character? It's been almost 25 years since he past(Dec 18 1997)
Mark P
10:52
I loved the sketches where he plays "himself" hosting a talk show.  He's asking Paul McCartney questions like "do you remember when you were in the Beatles?  That was awesome."

If Judge does leave, would a trade for Reynolds (that includes Peraza and  a lot more) and the signing of Correa right the Yankee Clipper?
Mark P
10:54
I feel like Correa wouldn't be accepted well by Bronx fans, given his involvement on the infamous 2017 Astros

How can we make the Carroll for Moreno trade happen? It just makes too much sense not to happen!
Mark P
10:55
This is probably my favorite trade proposal in a while, in part because I'm fascinated by prospect-for-prospect swaps.

Isn’t it kind of crazy for Texas to sign a pitcher with medical problems over the years for five years guaranteed?
Mark P
10:57
The five-year deal caught me off-guard, but it's perhaps a sign of the market for starting pitcher, or a sign that Texas is just really aggressive about the guys they want.

There's plenty of risk, no doubt.  But if deGrom can help the Rangers compete in, say, three of those years, it'll be a nice investment

I know Scott Harris and Jed worked together with the Cubs…could you see the Cubs getting Báez in a trade with a SP and Tigers eating cash?  I think the Cubs could play Baez at 3B and sign one of the big four SS.  Thoughts?
Mark P
10:58
I don't see the Tigers eating money and abandoning ship on the Baez signing after just one year

Why is Jurickson Profar getting no love in free agency?  He may not be a superstar but he played well for the Padres last year.
Mark P
11:00
Profar seems like the kind of a player who's a backup plan for a lot of teams.  He'll start drawing more attention once a couple of the bigger names come off the board.

Do you miss Jo Adell questions?
Mark P
11:01
Adell's struggles have really cut into the trade offers.  Angels fans feel his trade value has cratered, and fans of other teams no longer see him as a prize trade asset.

Between the lack of Adell questions and a lack of beads/bees questions, it's a real sea change for the Weekend Chat
