It probably has some role, but it's not like there's any question who is in charge of the organization.  Plus, Mike Elias said himself that the team wasn't going to suddenly splurge on payroll in one fell swoop this winter.  Do I think they'll make a bigger expenditure than Gibson's one-year deal?  Probably, but maybe not more than one such addition

Alcantara alone cannot change the fortunes of the marlins. Why then is the organization so averse to trading him and reaping a bounty of talent that could represent an entirely new future?
Mark P
7:39
The Marlins don't want to trade away yet another cornerstone player, and their extension with Alcantara represents their investment in him as the face of this next era of Miami baseball.

Based on the most recent article for the tigers on the free agent targets. Which of the position players would you prefer to sign if you were the tigers
Mark P
7:40
Of the group mentioned, I'd target Brian Anderson and Edwin Rios if I was Detroit

How can small market teams complete with the crazy escalating salaries?
Mark P
7:41
Same as they've always done....draft and develop good young talent, and if that talent can't be extended, trade them for new prospects and restart the cycle

This off season for the jays has gone from odd…to worrying…to an outright disaster.  Talk me down from the ledge.  Can the jays still come out of this with the arms and bats they need??  Feels like they missed the boat ok just about everyone
Mark P
7:42
There are plenty of free agents and trade targets left, and it's only December 11
Plenty of time for the Blue Jays (and every other team) to continue making upgrades

Are there any rules against mlb tacking extra years at a low salary onto the end of contracts to knock down the aav for the salary tax implications? Similar to nfl void years
Mark P
7:44
Given how MLB was prepared to nix the Padres' reported $400MM/14-year offers for Judge, it's likely the league wouldn't allow such other loopholes in the luxury tax rules

Why do the Red Sox operate like a small market team
Red Sox Fan
7:45
I’ve never felt lower as a fan. I feel like the Sox used to be in on every big name and weren’t afraid to bring in stars. What has changed?
Mark P
7:47
In fairness to the Red Sox, they did just spend $90MM on Yoshida and $32MM on Jansen, so it isn't like Boston is suddenly cutting payroll.

But, the team's continued willingness to let star players leave in free agency (and sometime alienate them along the way) doesn't make much sense to me.

Does Rolen get into the HOF this year?
Mark P
7:47
I think he'll get over the 75% line, yes.  Rolen will very likely be the only player inducted on the writers' ballot

When do you think we'll see a rearrangement of divisions? Strip them away completely now that each team plays each other?
Mark P
7:49
As someone whose favorite team plays in an incredibly tough division, I'd love to see the Jays get out of the AL East.  Tradition probably dictates that we'll never see total realignment or a total change in the AL/NL structure, but it'd be a fun idea.

Where does Ohtani sign next year and for how much? $500M?
Mark P
7:50
Given the way this winter's prices have skyrocketed, I would guess that Ohtani will certainly clear $400MM next winter (assuming, of course, that he has another vintage season and stays healthy)
Jo adell
7:50
Where does Jo adell get traded too?
Mark P
7:52
Hey, it's a Jo Adell question, reset the clock!

Reports out of Cincinnati suggest that the Reds are looking to add young outfielders by dealing from their young infield depth.  This leaps to mind as a possible landing spot if the Angels were open to moving Adell, but who knows how the Angels feel about any of Cincy's prospects.  And, before you even ask, there is zero chance Elly De La Cruz is the infield prospect the Reds would move.
Tigers23
7:52
Do you see the Tigers making a move for anyone or will Harris play out next season and then figure out what he really has in the younger players.
Mark P
7:53
This seems like the plan, especially based on today's report from Evan Petzold.  Detroit is looking at veterans on short-term contracts, and basically just giving the current roster a chance to get healthy or bounce back.

Are you surprised Senga didn't get a bigger contract?
Mark P
7:55
Five/$75MM was MLBTR's projection for Senga, on the dot.  Seemed like a fair number for a pitcher with plenty of ability and potential, but naturally also someone who's never pitched in North American before

I don’t believe the Mariners have improved much this offseason . They were very fortunate to having healthy pitching last season. That’s very rare to have consecutive years like that. I’m trying to be realistically optimistic for this next season but using logic I don’t see it. What’s your thoughts
Mark P
7:56
Adding Teoscar certainly helps the offense, and Wong is a nice lineup add possibly both offensively and defensively (Wong's outlier 2022 notwithstanding).

Your point about the healthy pitching is true, and that's why hanging onto both Flexen and Gonzales might ultimately be a wise move for the M's.

Is Giolito for McCarthy a good framework for a trade between White Sox and Dbacks
Mark P
8:00
With Giolito only under contract through 2023?  Probably not what the D'Backs are looking for, but other players could be added to both sides of the trade to make it more amenable for Arizona
Pitch and Catch

Are the jays over pricing their catchers. I know there is a few teams left that need help behind the plate but some of the teams are off the board. The list is shrinking!!
Mark P
8:01
Realistically, only the Cardinals are really "off the board" after signing Contreras.  The Jays (and A's, with Murphy) are surely still getting plenty of interest.  If anything, that interest could grow now that Contreras is no longer an option.

8:02
can you give the cubs fan base some hope?
Mark P
8:03
Sure!  Taillon was a nice addition for them, as was Bellinger.  The Cubs are already showing that they're willing to spend serious money, which was a lingering question many had going into the offseason.

8:06
With prices for starting CFs shooting up. Would it be smart for the Yankees to lockup Bader now and how much years/$ would it cost?
Mark P
8:07
Might be an interesting idea, though Bader is only a year away from free agency and might be thinking that a big payday awaits after a full year at Yankee Stadium

Hindsight is 20/20, but did the Giants make a big mistake in just rolling over their aging 2021 roster into 2022 thinking they could recapture the magic? As it stands now, they are much closer to fourth or even fifth place in the division. I’m not sure that signing Correa or any of the remaining free agents would change that. Is it time to
Mark P
8:09
Quite possible, since basically everything broke exactly right for the Giants in 2021.  As much as it might've been unpopular with the fanbase at letting Crawford, Belt, Longoria, etc. walk after 2021, that might've been the wiser move in the bigger picture
Seattle fan
8:09
If you listen to local sports radio, a good amount of Seattle fans will tell you the sky is falling and that the off-season has been a disaster by not jumping at the top of the market. How do you grade what the M’s have done so far?
