If you listen to local sports radio, approximately 30 out of 30 teams haven't done enough this offseason.

Even in New York, there are absolutely "sure, the Mets are spending, but are they spending the right way??" calls flooding in
Marty

How about Verdugo, Mata and Mikey Romero for Brian Reynolds.
Mark P
8:11
The Pirates want a lot more
Ken
8:11
Ultimately, which team do you think gets Sean Murphy? Tampa? Cleveland? Arizona? Cubs? San Francisco?
Mark P
8:12
If I had to guess, I'll go with the Rays or Diamondbacks.  If Oakland is prioritizing MLB-ready players, Arizona and Tampa are the best two teams to meet the brief

Dodgers seem like they’re resetting the luxury tax this season. Who do they sign?
Mark P
8:15
This week I made sure to double-check that Kershaw's salary had been included, so, the Dodgers are projected for roughly a $188.8MM tax number.  That's well under the $233MM threshold, giving LA lots of room to still make at least one big addition.

Keep in mind, the Dodgers like making midseason acquisitions.  So if the tax line is a consideration for them this year, they'll want to leave some room during the season to fit a new contract in

Will Bassitt have a tough time landing somewhere long term given the pitch clock and how slow he was on the mound?
Mark P
8:16
I don't think the pitch clock is nearly as big of a concern for other teams as Bassitt's demands for at least a four-year deal, or the draft pick attached to him via the qualifying offer
Who Says No?
8:16
Moreno, Martinez and Gurriel Jr for Varsho and Gallen.
Mark P
8:17
D'Backs say no.  That trade package wouldn't be enough to land Gallen alone, not that the Diamondbacks are going to move Gallen at all

How do you look at the Orioles starting pitching depth against the rest of the East? Kremer, Wells, Gibson, Voth, Grod, Hall, Means, Baumann and Bradish. I feel like it's underrated albeit without a true ace.
Mark P
8:19
It isn't a bad mix, and Orioles' pitching in general has looked a lot better since they changed the left field wall (and upgraded the defense considerably).  Of course, Baltimore feels like they have at least one ace in the pipeline in Rodriguez

Which starter do you see the Jays adding? Is it Nate Eovaldi time?
Mark P
8:20
Eovaldi would make a lot of sense for Toronto, though he does come with the added QO draft cost

Are the Dback right to say that Corbin Carroll is essentially untouchable? Looked decent during his brief MLB experience but is he the real deal?
Mark P
8:23
Scouts and pundits are all high on Carroll as well, and the D'Backs obviously love him.  There will be a lot of Rookie Of The Year buzz attached to him heading into 2023

with details of the As ask to the cards for Murphy becoming clear (2 pre arb plug and play mlb players and a top 3 prospect) how do you see it all shaking out. Do any of the suitors have that type of package to put together and stay competitive. What would an Astros or Guardians deal look like?
Mark P
8:27
According to reports, the A's wanted Donovan, Nootbaar, and Gordon Graceffo (one of STL's top pitching prospects) for Murphy.  It's a big ask and it isn't surprising that the Cardinals rejected that offer.

However, it isn't known if the A's were willing to budge on that ask if talks got really serious, or if the Cards just pivoted to Contreras because Oakland wouldn't budge.  It is also possible that what the A's specifically wanted from St. Louis would differ from what they want from the Guardians or Astros, for instance, depending on what those teams have

Is there any scenario where Tatis becomes available for a change of scenary?  Is the price huge?  Just the contracts?  In between?  They seem to have a ton of infielders.
Mark P
8:29
But what team looks at Tatis' injuries, the PED suspension, the $300MM contract and thinks "time to make a trade!"  Even factoring in other salaries maybe being swapped in a hypothetical deal....if a club has a bunch of money to spend and wants a shortstop, why not get someone with way fewer question marks than Tatis?

Wasn't 17M an overpay by the Cubs for Bellinger? I mean, two seasons in a row where he couldn't hit. I know they're hoping for a rebound but that seems like a lot of money for a defensive replacement/4th of'er.
Mark P
8:30
With so much interest in Bellinger, the Cubs probably had to go to $17MM to get the deal done

Thoughts on Angels offseason plans?
Mark P
8:31
I like what the Angels have done so far.  No real earth-shaking moves, but multiple solid additions to raise the talent floor on the roster

Reynolds to Texas makes since.
Mark P
8:32
Even beyond that, it make sense!  All depends on whether or not the Rangers would be willing to unload a lot of prospect depth to satisfy the Pirates' demands

Should there be a fine for every time someone says “Michael Brantley is a professional hitter?”
Mark P

Technically, aren't they all professional hitters?

Devers needs to be traded but the fanbase will go nuts. Does it happen?
Mark P
8:37
"Needs" to be traded is a misnomer, since the Red Sox are trying to win in 2023.  Now, it remains to be see if Devers will sign an extension with the team, and if the Sox feel he's leaving, a deal might be more feasible.  They can still get a nice return for even one year of Devers

Every time the Dodgers bring up a new wave of talent it works out
Mark P
8:39
The Dodgers' track record on prospects isn't 100 percent, but you're right, it is pretty good.  I can understand why fans are wary of letting Vargas, Busch, Pepiot, etc. get bigger roles in place of established stars, but with the Dodgers' track record, it's fair to assume that at least one of these guys will turn out to be really good

Do you think the longer it takes for Correa to sign increases or decreases the Twins chances?
Mark P
8:41
Hard to say, which is admittedly a real hedge of an answer for a chat.  The Phillies and Padres are off the market, but plenty of other teams still need or want shortstops.
8:42
It could be that Correa just wants a straight-forward contract rather than another option-filled deal that brings up the opt-out decision every year
Patrick
8:42
What is the compensation for the Cubs since Contreras signed with the Cardinals?
Mark P
8:43
The Cubs will get a bonus draft pick before the start of the third round
