Rick Hahn

Any thoughts on where we go from here to upgrade our roster?
Mark P
8:44
(Rick Hahn = White Sox GM)

Second base is still an obvious need, and maybe at least one corner OF spot depending on how much faith the Sox have in Sheets and Colas
8:45
As Hahn himself said at the start of the offseason, the White Sox are more prone to explore trades, since the free agent market could be too pricey for them

Is Tiedemann likely to be playing for Jays in 2023? If not, would you make him the centrepiece of a deal for Reynolds?
Mark P
8:47
Tiedemann had only a few Double-A games last season, so if he does make his MLB debut in 2023, it'll come near the end of the regular season.

If I'm the Jays, Tiedemann is untouchable since top-tier pitching prospects are hard to come by.

I know you won't answer my question because my questions are never answered, but I would like to know who you think the Reds might have a realistic chance to bring in to bolster the offense?
Mark P
8:49
It's your lucky day!
The Reds are likeliest to target short-term veteran players, and there are some interesting names available among the corner outfield crowd.
Value Guy
8:50
Do you really feel that a MLB team like the Cubs, might be better off signing a guy like Elvis Andrus for 2 years- rather than overpaying Swanson for a 6 year commitment?
Mark P
8:51
If Chicago isn't signing a Swanson, they'll probably just stick with Hoerner rather than bring in an Andrus-level player.

What's the penalty for the Padres if they sign another FA with a QO?
Mark P
8:52
They'd lose two more draft picks, and another $1MM from their international draft pool budget
Mets are best
8:54
Who do you think the Mets will sign next and/or what position upgrade do you think they need the most?
Mark P
8:54
I would guess some relief pitching.  But really, the Mets could do just about anything next and it might not really surprise me, the way they're spending.
Carlos Correa
8:55
Is it possible I may have waited too long to sign? I'm starting to get the feeling I'll have to settle for another high AAV, short term deal.
Mark P
8:55
Again, it's December 11th!

Do you think MLB players hop into these chats?
Mark P
8:56
Given how many players read MLBTR, I'd be surprised if at least one hadn't asked a question on a lark
Max scherzer
8:57
I have an opt out after the 2023 season. How well do I have to pitch to consider opting out of the last 1 yr/$43 million?
Mark P
8:58
I suspect he'll opt out unless he gets hurt or has a particularly poor season.  Scherzer has to be thinking that another 2-3 years with a big AAV will be available to him

Hendriks for Lux. Who says no?

Isn’t Swanson on his honeymoon?  This could be why he has been so quiet on the free agent report.
Mark P
9:00
Swanson just got married the other day, so it seems quite possible that he wanted to get the wedding and pre-wedding planning out of the way before really delving into free agency.
9:01
Not to say that he wouldn't have interrupted a rehearsal dinner to, say, sign a $200MM deal or something.  But, Swanson probably figured that waiting until after December 11 wouldn't hurt his market.

Seems like desperation is a theme tonight so let me adopt that tone: I’m in pain waiting for the Dodgers to do something or offer mission clarity. What do you think their philosophy is this off-season?
Mark P
9:03
Improve the roster and get under the luxury tax threshold, if possible.  The former is more important than the latter, given how badly the Dodgers want to win.

9:03
do you think Friedman will lock up Will Smith and Julio Urias before free agency?
Mark P
9:04
At least one of them, yes.  The Dodgers are usually pretty pro-active in identifying and locking up the players they see as long-term pieces.

Diego Cartaya's presence adds some doubt about Smith's future, but it's possible LA might see Cartaya as a trade chip if Smith is indeed their long-term guy

Love the balance schedule for 2023. Only thing that would make it better is if the last five weeks of the season were all home and home games versus division teams. Would make for excitement in September. Do you think that is a possibility starting in 2024?
Mark P
9:06
MLB already does try to increase the number of division games in the last few weeks of the season, but a total all-division schedule is impossible just because there's an odd number of teams in every division.

Any way possible the Yankees or any team have a shot at trading for Ohtani this off season?
Mark P
9:07
There was already no indication that Ohtani was being dealt, and that was reinforced when the Angels started adding pieces and indicating that they're competing in 2023

What are the odds the Mets keep Bassit?
Mark P
9:08
Probably not great.  The Mets likely let him walk, and recoup the QO draft pick.

Now that Keirmier has signed with the Jays are they no longer looking at other teams for an outfielder, say Kepler of the Twins, perhaps for a catcher like Danny Jansen?
Mark P
9:09
Given Kiermaier's injury history, the Jays certainly don't see him as a clear everyday option.  On paper, it would seem like Kiermaier is the elevated version of the Tapia/Zimmer/Bradley bench depth that Toronto deployed for much of the season as its outfield backups

With a light upcoming first base market, what does a good extension for Hoskins look like? 5/75?
Mark P
9:10
My suspicion is that Hoskins is either traded or let go in free agency.

When does Lou Whitaker get in the hall, is there a good reason he’s not already?
Mark P
9:13
Whitaker isn't eligible until the next "modern era" ballot in December 2025, and even then, he'd have to get onto the ballot (unlike this year).

It's a frustratingly long wait for a player I feel should've been in the HOF long ago.  Even moreso, given how this year's ballot seemed to favor the non-controversial players (McGriff, Mattingly, Murphy), I wonder if Whitaker might've gotten close to an induction if he'd actually been included on the ballot
