The Dodgers reportedly want to get clarity on Trevor Bauer's suspension appeal before proceeding with any true blockbuster winter moves, since if even some of Bauer's contract goes back onto the books, that will impact the luxury tax.
9:42
In a perfect world, the Dodgers would love to get under the tax threshold for a year since it gives them more flexibility, and they have the minor league talent to provide some help from within.

Why Tigers don't add position player in free agency?
Mark P
9:43
Recent reports suggest the Tigers have their eyes on a lot of free agents, though Adam Frazier has left the building signed elsewhere since Evan Petzold wrote that piece

Where do the Rays find offence? A lot of the options are gone via free agency. Seems like a trade at this point?
Mark P
9:45
A trade probably always seemed likelier anyway for Tampa, given how they operate.  As many have pointed out, having Franco and Lowe healthy for a full year will help the offense already, but you're right, the Rays could certainly use another good bat or two.  Once the free agent frenzy dies down, I'd think the Rays will be very active in seeing what's available on the trade market.

Are the Blue Jays going to end up trading any of their catchers?
Mark P
9:46
Yes.  Quite a few teams still need catching help, and the biggest names (Murphy, Contreras, Vazquez) have already come off the board.

We’re you as surprised by the White Sox signing Andrew Benintendi as I was ?
Mark P
9:50
Somewhat, since the White Sox rarely spend quite that big in general.  Given how aggressive they've been and how much they want to win, it isn't surprising that they set a new "biggest contract in team history" standard, but it is surprising that title went to Benintendi.

In terms of being a baseball move, however, it makes a ton of sense for Chicago's needs and I like the signing on their end

Mozeliak said payroll was going up. So far it went up .11%. The impact players are gone. The trade market is dead so far. Was Mo just talking again? Leading on Cards fans?
Mark P
9:51
The key words there are "so far."  The Cardinals have made enough big trades over the years that they certainly could have something up their sleeve later in the offseason
Jays
9:52
Any chance you see Yuli signing super cheap to play with his brother in Toronto?
Mark P

Doesn't seem like a fit for the Jays' needs.  Frankly, I'm not totally certain Lourdes Gurriel will still be a Blue Jay by Opening Day

The pirates continue to add older veteran players like Santana, Choi and Hedges. But I still think we need 1-2 SP to add to the rotation. Be nice if one was LH. Do u think Ben will add that?  Also, I think the addition of Connor Joe is a sneaky pick up as he can platoon in the OF/1B with the LH dominant players the pirates have. He seems to fit a nice roll for us. Appreciate ur response and thank you so much
Mark P

I can see one more veteran arm being signed, but the Pirates also don't want to take up too much rotation space away from their younger pitchers.

With the state of ss openings on teams do you think the Brewers could trade Urias to get max value now?

When is the last time this many of the MLBTR Top-50 signed before Christmas. At this rate they could all be signed by Christmas Day.

After the slow-moving 2019-20 and 2020-21 offseasons, the early onslaught of free agent moves has been quite interesting.  Some pundits saw this coming, however, figuring that signings are easier than trades, given how much teams value prospects and similarly evaluate players these days.

But, I think you'll see a lot more trades coming with so many free agents now gone, and teams still in need of upgrades
10:02
Oops, it occurs to me that I didn't answer that question about the Brewers possibly dealing Urias!  Probably the likelier move would be Adames being dealt, since Adames is more expensive and has less arb control remaining.

Any news on a possible trade of one of the diamondbacks outfielders
Mark P
10:03
Nothing new lately.  With the Astros signing Brantley, that probably takes them out of the mix for Varsho.....though Houston could possibly get bold and still acquire Varsho to play CF.  (Thus making Meyers and McCormick into backups or trade chips.)
Guard Dogs
10:05
Not a big fan of Guardians disrupting pitching/catching chemistry by essentially swapping a .148 avg guy with some power  (Zunino) for an absolute rock of a catcher and clubhouse guy (Hedges).  What are your thoughts?
Mark P
10:06
Zunino is a very good defensive catcher in his own right, and the Rays liked him as a clubhouse influence and as someone who can work with pitchers.

Plus, the Guardians probably ideally hope that Naylor is getting the lion's share of the catching duty anyway before the season is out

How do I convince Ohtani to stay
Mark P
10:08
A dump truck full of money, for one.  But really, the ownership question looms large in Ohtani's future, since I would imagine Ohtani would want to both get paid, and feel more secure that the Angels are on the right track towards winning.  So that will depend on who the new owner is, and what influence they can demonstrate between the time when they actually take control of the team, and when Ohtani's contract is up

Why doesn’t every team do pre arb contract extensions?
Mark P
10:10
I'm sure a lot of teams would love to lock up some players, but it depends on the particular desires of the prospects themselves.  And, for some clubs, they don't feel comfortable committing significant amounts of money to players who haven't proven anything at the MLB level
Nathan Eovaldi

Do I stay in Boston? If not, where then?
Mark P
10:11
Recent reports suggested other teams were showing more interest than Boston, so it would seem like Eovaldi might be headed elsewhere

What an unbelievable and dramatic World Cup final!  Did you watch and root for any time in particular?
Mark P
10:12
One of the best games I've ever seen, in any sport.  I was kind of rooting for Argentina just so Messi would finally win the big one, and man, what a roller-coaster of emotion even as someone who was a fan for a day

Trading for Murphy isn't noteworthy?

Should the Angels go after Crawford or Rosario to play shortstop
Mark P
10:14
I doubt Crawford would approve a deal, since he has full no-trade protection.  Rosario makes sense for the Halos, however, if they can meet the Guardians' asking price

Max Kepler is being floated by the Twins as trade bait. His last 2 seasons have been horrible but his 2019 season was spectacular. He hit 36 HRs but does anyone remember he hit quite a few of those HRs as a lead off hitter. Doesn't that factor in some how?
Mark P
10:15
The 2019 season saw a lot of players with inflated home run totals, due to the livelier baseball.  That year looks like a real outlier given the rest of Kepler's career.
