Best baseball computer game?
Mark P
10:16
I'm not a big gamer, but I loved the old Ken Griffey Jr. game for the Super NES.

(Man, I'm really dating myself with that comment, haha)

Cleveland signing Mike Zunino to be their regular behind the dish isn’t a real vote of confidence to Bo Naylor, considering the platform year of Zunino, do the Guardians know something we don’t?
Mark P
10:17
Maile and Hedges were both free agents, so the Guards had to bring some kind of veteran catcher in, notwithstanding how much they like Naylor
Claim Bloom
10:18
Do you have any idea what I am doing? I don't
Mark P
10:19
Bloom has made his strategy pretty clear, actually.  He is going to be adding roughly 7-9 players to fill the many holes in the roster, and he might stick with relatively lower-level (not that Yoshida was cheap or anything) contracts rather than a truly splashy nine-figure deal.

I don't dislike any of Boston's moves in vacuum, actually.  Turner in particular seems like a possible steal of a contract.

Why hasn’t Moreno for Carroll happened yet?
Mark P
10:20
The D'Backs view Carroll as basically untouchable, so my favourite Jays catching trade proposal of the offseason doesn't seem like it'll come to be
Sloth from the Goonies
10:22
In your estimation, does Trout already have a spot in Cooperstown or does he need 2 or 3 more dominant seasons
Mark P
10:22
He's a HOFer in my book, no question.  He's already played in more than the minimum 10 seasons
Phils Phan

The Phillies came out swinging early at the winter meetings with a set of free agent signings. Since then they have been very quiet about addressing additional bullpen pieces. Do you think these additions will come via the remaining free agent pool, or via trade? Also, who do you think a likely name would be to fill the role?
Mark P
10:24
Probably free agency, though not necessarily bigger-name types of players.

10:24
Now that Dansby has signed elsewhere are the Braves not going to spend to stay under the tax?
Mark P
10:26
Atlanta's ownership has indicated they're not adverse to paying the tax, so it doesn't seem like an obstacle for the front office.  Anthopoulos does like making midseason moves, however, and keeping payroll space open to make said moves.  So, the next expenditures might not come until later, but since the Braves still need some help now, it also wouldn't shock me to see them surpass the CBT line before Opening Day
Given how Atlanta's payroll has already ballooned, it's hard to say that the Braves are suddenly being cheap or anything
Swarley
10:27
Do signing bonus's count as salary for CBT?
Mark P
10:27
Yes
JJays CF
10:28
Jays told Kiermaier that they see him as an "everyday" player, do you?
Mark P
10:28
I'm sure the Jays would love it if Kiermaier can play every day, but realistically, he's likely to spend at least some time on the IL

How likely is it that the angels make a big move this offseason considering the longevity of Minasian’s job is probably contingent on the team’s success this season? Since it seems unlikely a new owner would keep Minasian on if the team underperforms again, do you think he’ll try to trade for an impact player(s)?
Mark P
10:31
It's quite possible that Minasian will be out of a job no matter how the Angels perform, since if a new owner wants to hire their own GM, that's that.  (As we saw with James Click, even winning is no guaranteed of continued employment.)

It all depends on who the new owner is, and it isn't like Minasian has total carte blanche this year either
Royals
10:31
Eric Hosmer was released and could sign for the league minimum.  So could Jason Heyward.  Not that either of them would necessarily come to KC, but why did the Royals keep Ryan O'Hearn with a larger price tag?
Mark P
10:32
Retaining O'Hearn surprised me as well.  Doesn't make much sense given his lack of success, and KC's other (better) options at his positions
mariners
10:33
Do you see the mariners moving the 30th overall pick?
Mark P
10:35
To be clear, this is a reference to the Mariners' pick in Competitive Balance Round A.  The CBR picks are the only draft selections that are eligible to be traded.

The M's also picked up a bonus pick (29th overall) since Julio Rodriguez won the ROY after spending the entire season on the roster.  So with that extra pick in mind, it might make Seattle more keen on moving the CBR pick.  That is no small matter, as teams covet draft picks so much that Seattle could wield that pick as a mighty trade chip if they so chose
10:36
Dipoto is so aggressive that I wouldn't be surprised if the M's did swap that pick, but the longer-term value of having three picks within 22-30 is also very significant

Happ for Jansen. Who says no?
Mark P
10:38
This is an interesting one.  Two years of Jansen for one year of Happ, but Happ might have the higher ceiling, yet Jansen might be an untapped resource and plays a scarcer position, and then again Happ is valuable in his own right as a switch-hitter, but Toronto might prefer to move another catcher....

....in short, I'm not sure who says no!  Mayyyybe the Blue Jays, if anyone?

10:39
Any thoughts on Trea Turner becoming a CF for the Phillies? He did it in Washington and they had trouble filling that hole last year. Marsh is good, but who's behind him?
Mark P
10:39
Turner hasn't played center field since 2016.  I'd imagine Vierling gets the nod if Marsh got hurt or something.
Jack
10:40
I can’t wait for the Ohtani sweepstakes next year. Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Giants, Rangers, hell I could even see a team like the Nationals or the Orioles with lower payrolls and tons of flexibility taking a stab at a 500 mill plus contract with him. It’s gonna be fun!
Mark P
10:41
It's going to be absolutely fascinating.  If Ohtani has another superb two-way season, it feels like he'll definitely surpass $400MM.  $500MM seems like another quantum leap in spending, and maybe one that might've been more realistic if Ohtani was a few years younger
Giants faithful
10:41
I get that it’s not your favorite topic but can you possibly offer insight into whether the giants are going to make any more meaningful moves this off-season?
Mark P
10:43
I don't mind talking Giants baseball! In many ways, they're a fascinating team given how many things they could potentially do.

It's doubtful that Correa would be signed to such a blockbuster deal, and the Giants would then put their feet up and consider their work done.  As always, Zaidi and company will be scouring the waiver wire and minor league free agents ranks for smaller moves, but it certainly seems like one more bigger-ticket transaction will happen

Do you have any bit of hope for we suffering Reds fans for 2023?
Mark P
10:44
Elly De La Cruz is coming.  This recent piece by Bobby Nightengale has set Reds fans into a tizzy.

Julio Urias is going into his final arb season. What do you think any potential extension looks like? Do you think 7yrs/$200m sounds fair?
Mark P
10:46
The Dodgers have been pretty proactive in keeping the guys they want to keep, even if it means paying big money in extensions.  But, if I'm Urias, there has to be plenty of temptation to test the open market given how free agent prices were skyrocketing this year.  If he has another good season in 2023, seven years/$200MM seems like a number that could be comfortably topped

Im sure the A's are smarter than us, but that return from the Murphy trade looked awfully light. What do you think?
Mark P
10:50
A little light, given all of the big prospect names who were mentioned as possible trade chips.  But, keep in mind that teams are loath to move those top prospects, even for a good player like Murphy.

The A's have clearly done a lot of work in observing Atlanta's farm system over the last couple of years, and really, it only takes two of those players to pan out to make the Murphy and Olson trades worth it
