This wasn't mentioned as much, btw, but in my view the Brewers came off great in that trade.  Ruiz is an intriguing prospect, but he seems like an acceptable player to give up for Contreras, who has already proven he can hit at the MLB level

Is Brandon Crawford a fit for Atlanta? Marcel Ozuna and cash to even out the money with the Giants releasing Marcell afterwards? Clears dead space for both teams and gives Atlanta insurance on the infield
Mark P
10:55
I find it impossible to believe the Giants would move a longtime shortstop and hometown hero in a contract dump for a player who would then be immediately released (and a player with Ozuna's baggage)
Besides, the Giants aren't in any dire straits payroll-wise, and Crawford is only under contract through 2023

Why doesn't Cleveland seeing its pitching development system poached more? They seem to have figured 'it' out.
Mark P
10:56
Plenty of Guardians coaches, front office personnel, coordinators, etc. have been poached by other teams.  But no one person holds the secret recipe to the Guards' success.

Longest chat you ever held?

Not even close.  During a couple of those nothing-happening nights during the lockout, the chat went close to 2.5 hours

Can you answer a Texas Rangers question? Who plays LF for the team next year?
Mark P
10:58
They were recently linked to Conforto, who makes a lot of sense.
10:59
It's at least possible Texas sticks with the kids and sees if any of them step forward early in 2023, and if not, then they can pick up an outfielder on the trade market.  But, considering that the Rangers have already spent big and want to win now, they'll likely make some kind of notable addition to left field (possibly by dealing one or two of those prospects)

Who could the twins get for Kepler
Mark P
11:01
The Twins' OF surplus could work against them to some extent in trade talks, since other teams will try to leverage the fact that Minnesota "has to" (sort of) move someone.  That being said, a lot of the OF depth aren't proven big leaguers or top prospects, so it isn't like the Twins have a ton of guys demanding playing time

Are the Dbacks still looking at a right handed bat? Are there any names that you could see them realistically signing?
Mark P
11:03
Looking at right-handed bats specifically, Andrus makes some sense at shortstop, or Longoria at third base.  But, it feels like the Diamondbacks will try to land that righty bat as part of the trade for one of the LHH outfielders.

Everyone said the Stros don’t NEED Verlander. I’m one that really thought they SHOULD resign him. I know they have really good depth with Urquidy, Garcia, Javier, Brown but something tells me that clubhouse won’t be the same without Verlander. That the rotation lost some “pizzazz” and “fire” when Verlander signed with the Mets. Am I crazy to think the Astros will feel the absence of Verlander?
Mark P
11:05
It's a testament to the Astros' pitching depth that there's even a question about whether or not they could afford to lose an ace like Verlander.  Beyond pizzazz or fire, there's also just the fact that Verlander is awesome, and suddenly Houston's depth looks thinner if any of their current pitchers get hurt

why didn’t the orioles make any big signings?  Will they ever decide to spend?
Mark P
11:08
To be fair (/Letterkenny voice), it's still only December 18.  The O's can still sign some players to multi-year deals, or pick up a larger contract in a trade, or make any sorts of other moves.

But, Mike Elias also said that the team wasn't going to go haywire on spending this winter, just that the payroll would be increased.

Sounds like the Mets would have signed Correa if they had more time. But we don't know if he'd be as good defensively at third. And that'd a lot of cabbage to be throwing at a guy whose changing positions. I think they dodged a bullet there.
Mark P
11:10
I think it's also worth noting that Correa was open to moving positions, but if all things were equal, he probably should've preferred remaining a shortstop.  The Mets might've had to beat the Giants' offer by a lot in order to convince Correa to become a third baseman
Nats
11:11
Do you think the Nats absorb a bad contract in a trade to boost the farm system and fill a hole in the OF?
Mark P
11:11
Maybe not in an offseason where there's so much uncertainty about ownership
11:12
That's it for tonight's chat.  Thanks so much for all the questions, another ultra-busy night in the queue!
