Nationals
9:47
Are the Nats going to make additional improvements to the major league roster.  They desperately need a corner outfielder and another starter.  Right now this team has 110 loss potential.
Mark P
9:47
They're not done, but any other MLB contracts signed won't be blockbusters by any stretch.  The Nats are in low-cost veteran addition mode
Braves
9:48
Elder, Anderson, and another pitcher plus Shewmake for Reynolds?
Mark P
9:48
The Pirates would want more than that

seems like Oscar Colas is the White Sox RF in 2023. Who's a good option as 4th OF especially considering a rookie in RF.
Mark P
9:51
Technically Sheets and Jimenez would be "fourth outfielders" in this scenario, but if you're talking someone who can play center field if Robert got hurt, that could be Colas himself moving over, or maybe a minor league signing like Billy Hamilton

Why would we think the Dodgers will pursue Ohtani? Friedman's given out one free agent contract of the length it would take, and that's only because Freeman unexpectedly was relatively a bargain. Betts was an extension.
Mark P
9:53
Because Ohtani is a unique figure in baseball history.  And, as a wise man once said, "If you're always rational about every free agent, you will finish third on every free agent."
That wise man?  Andrew Friedman

Who mans 1B for the Cubs on opening day?
Mark P
9:55
For now, looks like Wisdom or Mervis, as it seems Chicago will give Mervis a legit shot.  Plans could change, of course, either based on other moves or something as simple as Mervis struggling in Spring Training.  But, the Cubs seem interested in seeing what exactly they have in a player who might be a hidden gem.

I saw earlier in the chat that you said Bryan Reynolds was an All-Star caliber player.  Do you think that's because he really warrants it, or because Pitt had to have a player on the team?
Mark P
9:57
Reynolds was a 6.1 fWAR player in 2021.  That's good enough for All-Star caliber no matter what team you're playing for

By 2032, the A's are 1) still in Oakland playing in Coliseum, 2) in Oakland, but a new stadium, 3) Las Vegas, or 4) somewhere else entirely?
Mark P

I'm leaning towards option #3 or #4

Option #1 seems completely off the table

Practically speaking and ignoring the drama how would you rate my off-season moves?
Mark P
10:01
Don't dislike any of Stripling, Manaea, Haniger, Conforto, or (via QO) Pederson in a vacuum.  However, I can't look at the Giants roster and feel they're all that much better than last year's team

Lucas Giolito for Jordan Westburg? Sox get a prospect who's MLB ready and is a better 2B solution right now for them, and the Orioles get a Pitcher who's prime bounceback material and he goes to an organization who really got better at fixing at pitchers last year.
Mark P
10:03
If the Sox don't think they can extend Giolito or have any doubts about his ability to bounce back, they should make this trade in a heartbeat.

As much as Baltimore needs pitching....moving a top-100 prospect like Westburg for one year of Giolito coming off a bad year?  Doesn't seem likely.

When does Alonso get his money?
Mark P
10:05
Not eligible for free agency until after 2024, but Alonso is already pulling in a big arb salary....projected for $15.9MM this winter.

The way Cohen spends, would it shock anyone if Alonso was locked up to a major extension before Spring Training is over?

Should the Tigers trade Eduardo Rodriguez? Where would he fit in?
Mark P
10:07
Plenty of teams could use E-Rod in the rotation, but I don't see Detroit pivoting to move him.  Trading Rodriguez just a year after the signing indicates that the Tigers are more or less starting over, and the front office (or ownership, especially) probably doesn't want to make such an extreme decision just yet
