I love how the Brewers made out with their three-way trade! What is your take on three-way trades? They have always amazed me how three teams can agree on something.
Mark P
9:09
As someone who has been on MLBTR for a few three-team trades, they're not overly fun to report on in real time, given how it makes for a hectic 15-30 minutes of rewriting and refreshing your post.  :)

But in the bigger picture, they make things even more interesting.  They're pretty rare too, speaking to your point about how complicated such deals must be to arrange

Good morning and happy 25th December from Cambodia!

I don't get all of this concern over Correa's knee. It's not like he hasn't played at an absolutely elite level for a long time after the surgery -- isn't that the point, that teams are paying long-term money to a guy with proven short-term return? So he breaks down at 38: who would've been surprised anyway?

What’s the deal w/ Correa’s ankle? Do the doctors think it won’t hold up in his later years?
Mark P
9:13
It's all just speculation at this point, but Correa had a hard slide late in the 2022 season and said the plate in his leg was jostled in some way.  He didn't miss any games due to the issue and seemed fine.
9:14
However, in absence of other details, this might be the red flag that now popped up in this physical, if the plate or his knee was in some way impacted.

What's the likelihood that Arizona trades another OF? Can Yankees maybe get involved if Reynolds talks fade?
Mark P
9:17
I'd think it unlikely that the Arizona moves another OF.  Between Carroll, McCarthy, Thomas, Gurriel, and Kyle Lewis, there's some depth but also a lot of uncertainty (i.e. Lewis' health, a lot of inexperience in the group)

Do you think the Angels have a good shot at getting Eovaldi? I am wondering if he is worth the deal that he might be asking for. Whats your thoughts?
Mark P
9:20
It would be an interesting move for LAA, especially with their recent history of being unwilling to invest heavily in starting pitcher.  Not that Eovaldi would necessarily require a mega-deal, but it would still be a pretty substantial multi-year commitment, not to mention losing a draft pick (due to the qualifying offer).
Broadly speaking, and since it isn't my money, I think the Angels should go for it.  The team should be trying to win, and Eovaldi makes their staff all the better.

hot take: giants should’ve spent big last offseason on Correa and Freeman instead of offering belt a QO and extending Crawford
Mark P
9:22
Hindsight is 20-20, eh?  But if you're the Giants and both of these veterans are having such big revivals, it puts the front office in an awkward spot.  Especially since Crawford and Belt are longtime franchise stalwarts.

9:23
Does Daulton Varsho play LF for the Jays? Seems like a bit of a waste to put a premium glove in left and he didn't play there at all last year. Do you think they platoon Daulton?
Mark P
9:24
Unofficially, the Jays probably have Varsho penciled in for some center field time if or when Kiermaier gets injured.

Several teams such as the Mets, Marlins, Rays and Rangers have a few extra Starting Pitchers than they have rotation spots. Any of them seem like a good trade partner for the Orioles?
Mark P
9:25
Maybe not necessarily the Rays due to the division rivalry, but sure, any of the others seem feasible.

In fact, even the Rays could work, given that the two joined up on that Trey Mancini three-teamer with Houston last summer

Why does every commenter feel like their team isn't doing anything if they aren't signing the absolute top free agents? I still see comments from Mets, Yankees, Rangers and Padres fans complaining that their teams aren't doing anything.

Nature of the offseason!  No fanbase is satisfied until the World Series, and even the Astros fans had a short honeymoon until "wait, Click isn't coming back, huh?"

Any word on former NYY Aroldis Chapman pitching in 2023?
Mark P
9:28
No public buzz about Chapman to date.  He'll land somewhere, but it isn't all that surprising that he isn't signed to this point.  Remember, it's still only late December....plenty of time before spring camps open, let alone Opening Day

Mark P

All the big-market usual suspects, and the Dodgers will surely be at or near the front of the line.

How many teams are preparing to make a serious bid for me? Are the Dodgers getting under the tax to save for a bigger offer?
Mark P
9:31
Aha, I posted the earlier version of that same question.  The Dodgers' tax endeavors are surely being done with Ohtani in mind, but in the broader sense, any team (well, except the Mets) would generally want to "reset" their tax penalties if they can do without hurting their chances at contending
Braves
9:32
If AA releases Ozuna does his contract still count against the luxury tax threshold? If so wouldn’t it make sense to hold onto him and see if he does well first before releasing him?
Mark P
9:33
Yes, the Braves would still be responsible for his contract, minus the MLB minimum salary (if he signed elsewhere).

Since it doesn't seem like Ozuna is getting any trade buzz, you're right, the Braves' likely play is just to keep him and hope for a turn-around

Do you know if any MLB players are participating in the free agent prediction contest?
Mark P
9:35
Boras: Good news Carlos, the Giants agreed to that $350MM contract!

Correa: Uh oh, I picked myself to join the Mets, and I'm so close to the lead in the MLBTR free agent prediction contest.  Scott, is it too late to end up in New York?

Boras: Sighhhh, ok, I'll make some calls.

9:36
Who says no? Jack Flaherty for Eddys Leonard and Jorbit Vivas.
Mark P
9:38
Flaherty is a good choice as a possible change-of-scenery candidate, and I'm on record as saying that it's unlikely he'll remain in St. Louis over the long term.

That said, I'm not sure I see LA moving two decent prospects (both just about MLB ready) for one year of Flaherty, who hasn't been particularly healthy in three seasons

9:40
What type of return can the Cubs get for Ian Happ? Is Brennan Davis ready for a call up to the Majors?
Mark P
9:41
Davis was waylaid by injury, so the Cubs are waiting to see if he's healthy (and productive at Triple-A) before settling on any sort of a timeline for a big league promotion
It's quite possible that Davis' injury situation has made the Cubs less eager to deal Happ.  If anything, Happ might be an extension candidate, if the Cubs are back to being regular spenders.

It kinda seems like SF rushed into signing Correa because they missed out on Judge.
Mark P
9:43
"Rushed" isn't really accurate, since it was well-known that the Giants were exploring the shortstop market.  Even if Judge was their top target, they did their homework on Correa, Bogaerts, Turner, Swanson.

You have to agree with me, it is time that the Royals cut bait on Mondesi and Dozier, but is there anyone willing to trade for them, or will they just release them?
Mark P
9:46
Dozier probably doesn't have much trade value, given his contract and lack of production.  Mondesi is still inexpensive enough that I can see teams being interested, plus some clubs might feel that their own training staffs can help him stay on the field.
